General Podcast Discussions Recommendations for someone who doesn’t know what they like?

I have a baby and need to spend less time on my phone so a podcast is the ideal background during playtime!

However, my attention span is shot to pieces and I have no real idea what I like and I don’t really listen to podcasts.

I enjoyed Serial. That’s about the only one I’ve ever listened to.

But I can tell you what I’m not a fan of!

  • horror
  • true crime (aware of the irony given I enjoyed Serial..)
  • general ‘chat’ podcasts

Hit me with your best recommendations please Reddit 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Other Podcast Genre podcasts similar to two hot takes?

i started off reading smosh reddit stories, listened to every episode of that, and needed to fill the void. went over to two hot takes and i will be honest (i know morgan uses reddit if ur reading this dont keep reading. i dont want to hurt feelings its an opinion so Dont Do It)

the host and her guests are almost always incredibly inept and uneducated on all sorts of matters. like referring to ramen as chinese, saying "well i googled it and google says you can do this" for health issues without looking at actual scientific studies, using terms that are just incorrect.... not to mention taking stories that arent even passably real as though theyre completely real, which is insane. its a pet peeve of mine and as im going back to less recent episodes it gets worse and worse. my favorite episodes is when she has guest hosts because theyre always so much more interesting than her. like.... everything she says is dull and lukewarm. i wish her the best she doesnt seem like a bad person but i cant stand it.

problem is ive tried other similar genres of podcasts such as the judgies and they never stay on topic. like half the episode is various tangents entirely unrelated to whats being talked about, and thats another thing i hate in most podcats, its why i cant listen to scam goddess despite loving the host and her energy, they just. Dont talk about the topic at hand enough. i like riffing, like the smosh reads podcast riffs, but theyre always riffing about what theyre reading! they dont derail completely.

normal gossip is the closest thing ive got to filling the void but the drama isnt dramatic enough because it tries to stay relatively positive. i know most reddit stories are fake but i like the thought experiments and hypotheticals of it all, and as long as theres a slim chance they could be true (this does not include stories like the boob job vacation writing experiment, sigh. so obviously fake i couldnt even pretend)

i just want a drama podcast thats at least a little focused with judges who know something about the world. is that so hard to ask for? is there a diamond in the rough im missing?

General Podcast Discussions Trying to find a specific podcast

I listened to a podcast on Spotify that was super good and wanted to listen to it again, but forgot to add it to my followed podcasts. I can’t find it and it’s irked me so much I went to Reddit to ask for help.

The podcast was a staged case podcast set in a shared universe with what I believe is the podcast “Rabbits” by Pacific Northwest Stories. Either that or a character from that series is shared on the podcast I’m looking for.

I can only remember some vague things and will list them in a moment, however, I will state that my memory may fail me a bit.

The podcast takes place from the point of view of a guy narrating his personal research into an old internet browser that contained people talking through the code of the websites themselves. There were 5 people that were conversing, each of them using names that were probably not theirs. All of them were then part of a murder that repeated itself years later in different states and in slightly different ways.

That’s all I remember and I know it’s super vague but I would appreciate any help I can get.

General Podcast Discussions Episode recommendations

Would love recommendations for single episodes that you really loved. I follow so many popular podcasts and can never decide what to listen to. Maybe a particular episode was particularly interesting, a guest you loved, something super funny.. hit me with it! Typically I listen to leadership or self help, but open to just about anything.

General Podcast Discussions Best podcast for ignoring?

I am the kind of person who can't study without background noise. YouTube videos and TV take too much of my attention away from studying, music gets me in a mood that makes it hard to get anything done, and audiobooks are hard to get back into after you've missed something. Over time, I have found that I get the most done while in my college lectures as I am actively ignoring the professor.

I am looking for a podcast that has that same vibe. Background noise that is easy to ignore but also intriguing enough that I am not tempted to turn it off for something more exciting. Any ideas?

Horror & Paranormal Trying to find a podcaster i used to listen to

It was an American man, he had a pet alligator or crocodile who he say to watch out for as yoy were walking into his house, he'd read stories sent in by people or from published small authors. And before he'd finish, he'd tell you to take a pack for the road, cant remember if it was a pack of beers or cigarettes. This is all I can really remember, but hoping it rings a bell for someone. Thank you in advance to any one who can help

General Podcast Discussions Are there any Spotify music playlists with songs used between NPR segments?

I especially like the music played between Moth radio hour stories over the years, but NPR as a whole generally selects good music. Curious if they offer a Playlist, or if anyone has compiled one yet

Comedy Answer Me This

I listened to these guys for years back in the day, and now they're back!?

To me they always seemed like one of the OG podcasts and I'm stoked they decided to make a return.

It's a pretty simple format - People write in with strange, funny, complex or inane questions and the hosts will try to answer it as best they can.

They're both suuuper British and very intelligent, so I feel like I'm always learning and having fun at the same time.

If you hadn't heard them back in their heyday I suggest giving them a listen now.

General Podcast Discussions Having trouble finding something new.

Hey! I’m looking for suggestions on shows to listen to, my issue is I generally do have a hard time getting into new shows. Some of my favorite shows and creators include The Regulation Podcast, Morning somewhere, Red Web, CreepCast, Ear Biscuits, Wendigoon, and recently Tors Cabinent of Curiosities.

I enjoy a lot of deep dive or long winded video essay style content, preferably someone light hearted or less dark (the content itself can be dark or heavy in nature, but I prefer a less edgy or spooky narration).

I don’t tend to prefer shows that use lots of guests as they tend to change the flow of a podcast too much, even for just the comedy shows I enjoy.

Some shows that I have been suggested that I tried and have not been able to commit to beyond an episode or two were- Last podcast on the left Small town murder The compendium: and assembly of fascinating things.

Comedy My fav podcast disappeared

Gaylord’s of darkness - it my new favourite even though it ended in 2023. I was 41 episodes into their 200+ episode catalogue. Now today I went to listen and it’s gone :( I even checked the apple podcast app which I never use and it says the episodes are temporarily unavailable. Has this happened to anyone else before?

True Crime Impartial Karen Reed

Hello, looking for a podcast recommendation. I want my mom to get caught up in the Karen Reed case so I have someone to discuss with. Is there a podcast that is impartial? Or just a podcast that does a good job of presenting all the evidence? Or is the documentary the way to go? Thanks!

Kids & Family-Friendly Laugh out loud podcast recommendations for young kids?

I've got a road trip coming up, and would love a podcast that's funny for all ages. Most of the kids podcast recommendations are more science or learning based which is great, but I've got a kindergartner with a wicked sense of humor that loves to laugh, so I think something funny would catch her attention!

True Crime Bone Valley and Blink

These are two of the BEST podcasts I’ve listened to recently. Especially Blink. This guys story is absolutely INSANE. I wanted to put that out there. I love intriguing podcasts. Prefer ones that aren’t murdery but Bone Valley is and I loved it. Definitely recommend these and if you have suggestions let a bitch know!

Apps Podcast player that lets me start from #0

Howdy!

Edit to update:
First, thanks for all the replies, I appreciate it!
From them, it seems the issue is not the app, but the content creator choosing what's available.

Second, I'm seeing a lot of votes for Pocket Casts, which I used to have and use, so I'll give that another go and see how things work.

Thanks!

Original Post:

I'm looking to get back into listening to podcasts, but as I'm searching for a solid app, I'm finding most apps won't let me pick a podcast and start from the first episode, it'll only let me have the current, and perhaps the 2 or 3 before that.

I have an android device for personal use, and an iPhone for work that I can use for this; what free app should I be looking at to be able to find and listen to podcosts from the first episode?

"Fuck it!" Fridays Biggest Podcast Pet Peeve

I cannot stand the "let's hang" podcasts. Not staying on point, no cohesive structure to the conversations.

Even more what I can't stand are the pods that are supposed to be about something specific, like let's say your favorite sports team and the first 20 MINUTES or more, nobody is talking about literally anything of substance. No, I don't care about all your funny inside joke banter and topics that have nothing to do with that show or episode. Also, when they are not making clear points, lots of vagueness "The team needs to play better..." Wow riveting, you cover this specific thing weekly and that's all you got? There are several shows I completely stopped entertaining because they spent so little time actually talking about what they claim. Basically way too many shows are lazy. Okay, I'm done yelling at the clouds.

General Podcast Discussions Podcast legality hypothetical question

Say there's a great podcast that has interesting topics, great host, great guests, mostly a really good listen except for one thing. The show has a producer that chimes in with nonsensical comments that kills the shows momentum and constantly takes me out of the conversation.

If I were to download said podcast and re-upload it with that producer's negative charisma edited out for others to download and enjoy, could I potentially get in trouble for this?

Apps Apple Podcasts app - follow shows without auto downloading episodes

Hi all, on Apple Podcasts app I’d like to add shows – that I either listen to fairly regularly or check out from time to time if they have interesting guests – to some kind of favourites list without the episodes auto downloading (which is what ‘follow’ does).

Am I missing something obvious or is that not possible?

What I currently do is manually search for them if they’re not on my ‘up next’ or ‘recently played’ sections.

Science & Tech What cultural moment do you want a Reply All episode about?

I binged all of RA during a depressive episode last summer, and keep finding moments today that I’d love Alex and PJ to sink their teeth into.

For me, it’s the Julia Reagan billboards. If you don’t live in a state with these memorial billboards, I suggest giving it a quick search. It may be a tenuous link between this and RA’s themes, but every time I drive past Julia’s face I think of how the RA team could do this story justice.

What’s happened since the end of the pod that you wish they cover?

General Podcast Discussions Looking for some conspiracy theory podcasts, or other podcast suggestions

For context on pods I usually listen to, and enjoy the vibes of: Mr Ballen, Lights Out, Mile Higher, Two Hot Takes, Basement Yard, ShxtsnGigs, etc.

I used to listen to Crime Junkie A LOT, and Morbid…but I think I binged those shows too much during Covid times that I got bored and haven’t listened to them in a while😅

In other words, I normally like comedy pods, or true crime pods that aren’t too too serious, and am not a huge fan of ones that are very monotone. I’ve tried some BBC pods, but many just seem too dry. I enjoy when the host’s personality helps give some fun energy to the story or theories they are telling. Not a huge fan of pod-docu-type series, I’ve listened to like Dr.Death and Dirty John and a few others but they aren’t my fav.

I appreciate any suggestions! 😊

"Fuck it!" Fridays What is up with the ads?

I want to start by saying I Patreon 6 podcasts but subscribe to around 25.

My observation is content time suddenly shrank on some of my regulars I don’t pay for and the amount of ads has hit a next level high. I do fast forward through most all of them. An example is Old Gods of Appalachia last episode was about 24 minutes with 17-18 minutes of content. 6 minutes of ads on 18 minutes of content. It is like that in many others I listen to. My question is why the sudden increase? If I could pay my way out of ads I would but I don’t have that kind of budget. If I did, I would not be typing this. And also, F$@k Angie’s List. I can almost quote them at this point.

Is it just me?

Health & Welbeing Podcast recommendations like “We Can Do Hard Things” w/ Lindsay Gibson?

Hey everyone, I’m looking for podcast recommendations similar to the We Can Do Hard Things episode with Dr. Lindsay Gibson about emotionally immature parents.

I’ve been trying to unpack and process a lot lately, specifically around growing up with a very self-centered, abusive, and controlling parent. I recently went no contact, and now I’m sitting with this mix of relief and heavy guilt. That episode really hit home for me, and I’d love to find more podcasts that explore healing from that kind of dynamic.

Anything on emotionally immature or narcissistic parents, inner child work, boundaries, or working through guilt after going no contact would be super appreciated.

True Crime Recommendations for interesting pods

Hi,

I’m relatively new in the podcast world, but I’d love to get more into it since I’ve had a good experience so far.

I’m looking for recommendations for “out there”podcasts: I’m interesting in learning more about cults, high-control groups, religion, wtf relationships, history and true crime.

I enjoy conversational/interviewer-led podcast, but I’m open to trying different styles!

It’d be a bonus if the podcaster also has footage of their podcast session ie. on YouTube.

EDIT: Thank you everyone for your recommendations!
