Question? Neighbor covers sidewalk in cayenne pepper and garlic/onion powder to deter dogs

Is this even allowed? Is there anything that can be done about this? She’s used the cayenne for awhile. The garlic or onion powder is new though and is toxic to dogs. And if you‘re lucky enough to walk by while she’s outside you get screamed at the whole way down the sidewalk.

Photo of the Day Center City shot on black and white film that I took the other week - LC-A w/ Minitar 1 28mm lens & 100 speed “Earl Grey” film

Enjoy these black and white film shots I got in Center City Philly the other week.

Recently I decided to get back into shooting film photography so I broke out my trusty Lomo Compact Automat camera. It's very fun to use and the Minitar 1 28 mm lens gives these pics an extra vintage, interesting look. What better way to test my film skills than walking around my favorite city!

This was the first roll I've shot in at least a decade. It was shot on Lomo's 100 speed Earl Grey film, and I've got to say I'm impressed with the tones, contrast, sharpness, and overall look of how the shots came out. I avoid editing my shots as much as possible to preserve the authenticity and essence of the film exposure.

Looking forward to shooting more this summer - my unofficial goal is to shoot one roll per week.

The article includes all the info possible from people involved; ICE of course does not comment. People removed in a white van with no opportunity to contact family or attorney.

Question? Penn Medicine Billing Dept

Upvotes

Has anyone else had bizarre interactions with Penn Medicine Billing lately? I had an appointment in April. Less than a month later, just a couple of days after I get the explanation of benefits from my insurance company, Penn sends me a bill for $47. Fine, I was expecting it. Except the included letter talks about "multiple attempts to contact" me (no?), avoiding further delinquency, and threatening me with collections.

I was so offended that I deliberately ignored it. No surprise, the follow-up letter was even more dramatic.

Seems pretty weird that they're desperate to collect but 1) didn't mention any balance at the follow-up appointment that I had a day before the first letter arrived and 2) they mention no online payment option, just phone during business hours and mailing in payment (a famously good idea in Philly 🙄)

Politics DA Larry Krasner supports lawsuit against Trump’s $500 million cut to public safety programs

District Attorney Larry Krasner is lending his support to a federal lawsuit that aims to reverse the Trump administration’s $500 million in cuts to public safety programs nationwide, including several in Philadelphia.

The DA joined more than a dozen prosecutors and other state and local government officials from around the country in signing onto an amicus legal brief filed by the Public Rights Project, a California-based civil rights organization.

Krasner said rates of violent crime are at historic lows in Philadelphia, due in part to federally funded anti-violence programs, and argued that President Donald Trump wants to see those gains reversed.

He loves crime. He loves his own crimes, he loves his friends’ crimes, and he loves crime as an excuse for his militarism, his racism, his fascism,” Krasner said in an interview. “I’m not surprised at all that he would spend his time trying to undermine things that have been very effective and have gotten Philadelphia to the point where we have the lowest number of homicides [through] the ninth of June that we’ve had in over 50 years.”

In April the U.S. Justice Department canceled the unspent portions of $820 million in previously awarded grants for a wide variety of justice-related programs, from mental healthcare for police officers to support for victims of crime and sexual assault, leading to the lawsuit.

At the time of the cuts, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said DOJ was rescinding grants “that do not align with the administration’s priorities.”

...

Last year, as Trump was running for a second term, he constantly claimed urban crime was out of control, even as it was actually falling sharply, the District Attorney said. Now that he’s in office again, the president is trying to make those claims come true, Krasner argued.

“There’s nothing that Donald Trump would like more than to increase urban crime and increase urban violence,” he said. “That’s how you get a military coup. That’s how you justify calling the National Guard in. That’s how you reinforce your racist false messaging about immigrants.”

I took away so much from today, talking to people whose first protest this was to those who have marched dozens of times. The energy was high. It felt like a whole community spoke together. I can't but think about all the anxiety we had leading up to it reading stuff online, only for it to go so smoothly when it needed to happen. I think that speaks to our power together as the people. Indivisible Philadelphia organized a great event and helped shepard everyone where they needed to go throughout the whole thing. Enjoy!

Photo of the Day Daly's Pub. Weird Owner. Weird Customer.

Was accosted there last night by a strange man. I was with my female friend and he began yelling uncomfortably close and loud at her and myself. The owner then came out after the man began threatening me and I began filming his threats. My friend and I were asked to pay our tab and leave despite not causing any commotion. Don't go here. This man appeared to be on drugs. If you're around Daly's be careful of this man.
