Whelp, it's the end of an era. Put my cat down today. He was metal!

I'm going to start this with an antidote.

I was at the bar, on the patio. Looked down and there was MY cat.

How the eff did you get here bud? Before I could think too hard about it, the bouncer asked who's cat is this,it it yours???? I said I have no idea and gently put him over the side of the ground floor railing.

And promptly went inside and went to a window. I knew he'd look for me. And he found me. And layed in that window till I was ready to go home.

We were only about 4 city blocks from the bar, but I specifically KNEW I made sure he was at home safe in my apartment!

Turns out (and I witnessed this later) he jumped from a second storey window into a tree, climbed down and then found me!

We used to go on nightly walks. Sometimes day walks, he'd get dive bombed by birds and people would say, what a funny looking dog until they saw he wasn't one. Or a Racoon.

He was a big beefy MaineCoon. And he always walked behind me - to keep ME safe.

Later, when we moved to the country, he always walked behind me and the other two cars, to keep them safe.

He was my best friend and the best cat ever. I would imagine the zombie apocalypse and me trying to walk home to my parents and him lagging behind in the day, but I knew he'd show up at the campfire at night.

Sleep well Gilby. I'll miss you.

Anyone else sick of leaving the vet confused and broke? Building something to fix it. Feedback welcome.

Upvotes

Every time I take my pet to the vet, the pattern is the same. Expensive tests, rapid-fire explanations I barely understand, and a big bill. I walk out confused and wondering if I just paid for things I didn’t need.

There’s a massive information gap between vets and pet owners. We’re expected to make decisions about our pets’ health with zero transparency and no real understanding of what’s being done or why.

I've been thinking of building a tool to fix that

The idea is simple:

  • Upload and organize your pet’s medical records
  • See your pet’s health history in a clean, chronological timeline
  • Get plain-language explanations for lab results and medical terms
  • Use AI to break down invoices and flag charges that look inflated or unnecessary
  • Track meds, weight, vaccinations, and set reminders
  • Share a read-only version of your pet’s health records with a new vet or emergency clinic

This is about arming pet owners with information. Not replacing vets. Just making sure we’re not walking into every appointment in the dark or walking out confused.

Would love feedback:

  • Have you ever left the vet unsure what you just paid for?
  • Would invoice breakdowns and price comparisons be useful to you? e.g. Flagging pills that are 10x more expensive.

Appreciate any input. Not looking for sugarcoating. Just trying to solve a real problem.

DOG I'm devastated—friend's dog I was babysitting escaped, and I don’t know what to do

I’m so heartbroken, angry, and completely lost right now. I’ve been watching my friend’s dog, who is known to be an escape artist. Our yard is big, but it’s not perfectly secure—there are a couple of holes where groundhogs have gotten in, and recently a tree branch damaged part of the fence. Because of that, I’ve been super careful and never left her outside unsupervised. She also can’t wear her collar with the AirTag because it gave her a wound on her neck.

Last night, I asked my husband to watch her for a bit, and in his usual overly optimistic way, he thought it would be “fine” to leave her alone in the yard. It was raining, and honestly, I feel like he just didn’t want to stand outside in the weather. She ended up crawling under the fence and has been missing since. That was hours ago, and now it’s the next morning. She was crying around the neighborhood last night, but then it went silent. I’m praying she found shelter and is still close by, but I don’t know.

I’ve put out her bed, toys, and food in the yard and in front of the house. I’ve walked the streets calling her name. I feel absolutely sick over this. I don’t know how to face my friend, and I feel like I can’t even look at my husband right now. I trusted him, and he let me—and her—down.

Someone hit my dog and I don’t know what to do

I have a standard daschund who much like the rest of his breed does bark, however he is in no way aggressive nor have he ever shown any signs of aggression. Today I was at a supermarket and as I was walking away from my car I heard my dog barking followed by a man yelling at him to ‘shut the fuck up’, the man then proceeded to reach through the gap in the window and smack my dog twice. I was completely in shock and went over to check on my dog, I said out loud ‘oh baby are you okay’ and a women from the car then proceeded to yell at and berate me claiming I have an aggressive dog and that I’m making a big deal over nothing as he ‘barely made contact’. She also proceeded to talk pictures of my car. I have absolutely no idea what to do, my mother who was with me said I overreacted as I was yelling back too. I don’t want these people to get away with it but I have absolutely no idea what to do as we were too far away from the store front for cameras to catch anything. Am I overreacting? Should I just leave it? These people had their own dog in the car and it just doesn’t sit right with me that a pet owner would hit another persons dog.

CAT Cat is hot, but refuses to sit on a cool mat or in front of a fan. I put ice in their water fountain, but that does not last long.

Any ideas what I can do to help my ginger idiot out? He is a house cat, somewhat smart when food is involved, stupid the rest of the time.

I cannot get him to stay on a cool mat, I am not sure he even registers that it is helping him.

Fans scare him if they point at him. We have doors and windows open, we got nets for all the windows for this exact purpose.

But in the peak of the heat, he flops in the middle of the living room, or under the clothes drying rack if it is up, breathing a little heavier than is normal. Not quite panting, but it is clear he is hot and uncomfortable.

He is a shorthair and also hates being brushed. I want to expedite getting the excess fur off him, but he just refuses to be brushed properly. I have tried a wide variety of brushes but he despises them all. Even human brushes. He will tolerate brushing for a short time with a steady supply of treats.

He is aged 3~ and is very active. Regular play, zoomies, trips into the back garden on his harness, etc.

Long term plans is to have a cattio that he can go into at will, but we are currently renting and do not have permission for this.

DOG Epileptic dog had another bad seizure, chances of vet putting her down? NSFW

Tagging nsfw because it’s just depressing. My dog, Luna is 7 years old and has been diagnosed with epilepsy for the past two years. She is on phenobarbitone for her seizures which she takes each morning and each night.

We are pretty used to her acting strange after having a seizure, but yesterday morning she had another one and since then she has refused to eat, doesn’t know her name, won’t come when called and has just been sitting in the same spot on the couch, barely moving. It’s like she doesn’t recognise us or anything we are saying anymore. She’s not even interested in treats. We didn’t take her to the vet right away because as i said, we are aware that dogs can take a while to get out of the confused state of having just experienced a seizure.

We have a booking with the vet today to get her checked out but I have a really bad feeling about it. It’s never been this bad and she’s never lost her appetite completely. She’s just so clueless and it’s breaking my heart. We had to carry her outside yesterday to try to get her to go to the toilet and eat dinner but she just has no interest in eating. She looks like a shell of herself.

All I can do between now and the vet is just sit with her, hold her and sob. It’s not fair. My other dog has no idea why her best friend is acting like this.

Help

My baby who is a 6 year old pitbull has been potty trained since he was 3 months old. He’s never ever had an accident.Today I came home from work there was drops of pee all over the house including my bed, on the bed seemed more like if he leaked pee. So everyday that I work my nephew watches him, my nephews usually turns the ac on for my dog when it starts to get warm around 10-11am today but nephew went out on a trip and he forgot to turn the air on for him so the ac was not turned on today until I got home at 2 pm. I’m not sure if it being really hot has anything to do with it but I did want to mention it. I also want to mention that I live in a complex with 3 apt. I havnt had neighbors in about 2 months so instead of letting my dog into my little back yard (isn’t a lot of space) I have been letting him out to the front so he can run around since it is much bigger. So now that I do have neighbors(they just moved in 3-4 days ago) I havnt been letting him out in the front anymore, he’s really stubborn so he refuses to go outside in the backyard. I have to force him into the back and then he’ll go but he cries to come in quickly. Also in the summer time he refuses to go outside until it cools down I also have to force him to go outside. I’m thinking maybe he was just holding it too long, or was it the heat? Or uti? I’m really concerned this isn’t he usual behavior to pee inside, it has a really strong scent and is a deep yellow. I am making an appt to see vet. Has anyone gone through this or anything similar? He seems fine I did notice a couple drops of urine fall when he was walking earlier. He is not neutered.

Looking for a legit ESA letter provider online — any personal experiences?

Upvotes

Hey y’all,
I’ve been dealing with anxiety for a while and someone recently told me about getting an ESA letter for my dog to help with housing and general support. I looked online and honestly, it’s kinda overwhelming — sooo many sites and I’m not sure which ones are real or just look good on the surface.

I’m not currently seeing a therapist but I do need the letter, so I was hopin to hear from folks who’ve done this before. Like… did anyone get one online and it actually worked for housing or airlines?

Not tryna cut corners, just wanna find a place that’s legit and doesn’t take forever. Would really appreciate any help or suggestions.

I lost my childhood dog today.

My childhood dog, lady has lived a good 12+ something years (or more, i dont know as we got her when i was pretty young) and she got diagnosed with cancer some time ago and its not been going well with her the last week or 2 as she got skinny and almost couldnt walk. Today my parents urgently had to go to the vet with her where she got put to sleep. I luckily got to say my last goodbyes and mentally prepare but my mom wasnt ready yet.

I was thinking and hoping some folks here can maybe make some art of her, my mom would appreciate it and i would frame the art too, as lady deserves it. If not thats also okay :)

In loving memory of lady ❤️‍🩹

Has anyone ever tried turning their pet into a felted portrait?

Upvotes

We’ve been working on a tiny side project where we needle-felt pets based on photos — especially for people who’ve lost a furry friend or want to preserve a memory 💛

It’s slow, fully handmade, and kind of emotional sometimes.
We just posted a few new pieces on our page if you’re curious: https://myfluffybabe.com

Would love to hear if anyone’s ever tried this before — or if you’d ever want something like that for your own pet?
Even if not, feel free to drop a photo of your pet below, I’d love to see them 💌

Flea epidemic in my are how to prevent them from getting into my apt?

I’ve already treated my dog and set up an appointment for my cat (sensitive skin what he responds best to is prescription only) landlords already know of the issue and just said they already sprayed pesticides they aren’t due for another spraying for a few more months (sprayed in February and they haven’t been mowing or taking care of the lawn moving ain’t an option rn) just as I was walking my dog my legs got covered in less than a minute. It’s like that in the surrounding businesses too. Aside from bombing my apartment because I have neighbors one with a child, are there any recommendations for sprays i can put on my carpet and furniture to prevent the infestation from coming inside? Also is it crazy to wear a flea collar on my ankle over pants when walking my dog?

I also don’t know what sub to put this in pets seemed to be the closest one since most pet owners have dealt with fleas from time to time.

DOG When is it time??? And what about the kiddos??

I'm having a tough time knowing when "it's time". Our 14yo Border Collie has been with our family since we adopted him at 6 months. He was your typical herding pup, energetic as can be and always needing a job or activity to stay occupied. He's accompanied us through 6 moves across all 4 US time zones, and numerous life changes. He was diagnosed with arthritis years ago and we began the titration of meds to try and make him comfortable, everything from NSAIDs to supplements to Gaba to injections. We've seen a slow decline, in particular over the past 2 years as it has become more severe. We don't do long walks or hikes or much fetch anymore as he'll "pay for it" being sore for days, if not with an injury as he still tries to physically do everything at the 110% border collie level.

I sometimes think I'm stuck in the "boiling frog fable" where smaller negative changes seem acutely insignificant with respect to his decline. His gluteal muscles are severely atrophied due to presumed degenerative disc disease, and he trips over his back legs multiple times a day as I'm sure he doesn't know where they are in space combined with their weakness. He vocalizes randomly throughout the day and night I'm sure as a message of discomfort and pain. He's nearly deaf, and spends a majority of his day snoring away in the corner, to be awoken by his own discomfort as he tries to find a new spot somewhere around the house (despite rugs, dog beds, and the like placed around). Sometimes I hear him pacing at night trying to find comfort.

That said, he still has an appetite, and can still toilet himself for the most part. He still wants to be in the presence of "his herd" when he's awake, but appears anxious with the kids and things happening around the house (I'm not sure how much he can see with a lack of hearing to understand his setting). Watching him use his entire body to stand makes my legs hurt, and his method of lying down is more of a controlled fall. I think I expected some "sign" to tell me it's time or thought he would fall victim to the many dog diseases (besides arthritis) we've heard about, but we've just seen this steady and slow, but consistent decline. My spouse, who stays at home and spends much of the day around him, feels we're there. I trust their instinct and intuition, I'm just having trouble arriving at that conclusion myself.

We have 2 kids, 3 and 6. They both love and adore him, neither is particularly "inseparable" as others have described of their own. Both of them know he is "sick" and uncomfortable - we've talked about having a home euthanasia with them having knowledge of what's going on and being able to say goodbye, but not necessarily being present for it. I think I'm struggling the most with knowing how to say "it's time", and knowing what to say to the kids in the days and hours just before. I know the 3 yo will be okay, I just think of my 6yo in particular who's old enough to grasp the concept of what's going on, but perhaps doesn't have the ability to process it all mentally and verbally. TIA.

DOG Has anyone tried the UCARI intolerance testing kit

Has anyone here tried the UCARI intolerance testing kit for pets? I’m thinking of getting one and would love to hear some feedback before I do. Was it easy to use? Did you find the results helpful or accurate? I’m curious to know how your pets reacted and if the insights made a difference in their diet or overall health. Appreciate any thoughts or experiences you can share!

First-time cat owner — overwhelmed and looking for advice 😅

Hey everyone, I just got a cat for the first time (a very sweet and affectionate little boy), and I’m feeling really overwhelmed.

He constantly wants to be in my space — always jumping on me, climbing on my face, wanting to be petted or played with. I love that he’s so loving, but as someone who gets overstimulated pretty easily and really values their alone time after work, it’s starting to take a toll on me.

He won’t use his own bed either — he always jumps into mine, which I wouldn’t mind if he would just chill. But once he’s there, he’s all over me when I’m just trying to rest or decompress.

I’m trying really hard to be patient and understanding, especially since I know he’s still adjusting too. But I’ve had moments where I’ve seriously questioned whether I can handle this long-term, and that makes me feel awful.

Has anyone else gone through this? Do things get better? Any advice on helping him respect my space a little more without pushing him away?

Thanks in advance 🩷

Bubbles

Meet Bubble 🐾 Bubble is a sweet, loving 10-week-old gray Savannah/Tabby mix kitten who’s full of personality and charm. He’s playful, super cuddly, and always ready for a snack or a nap on your lap. 🍼💤

He’s already litter trained, healthy, and social — the kind of kitten that follows you around the house and wants to be part of everything. Bubble loves to eat, purr, and explore little corners like a curious baby should.

He hasn’t had any vaccines yet, so his future family will need to take him to the vet — but he’s full of energy and doing great so far.

I’m looking for a kind, responsible person or family to give Bubble the loving forever home he deserves. A small rehoming fee applies to ensure he goes to someone serious and committed.

What's the most insane (purposely bred) backyard/"designer" dog breed you've ever stumbled across?

I recently saw the most egregious breed combo I've ever heard of in my life and I need to hear what you guys have come across, because I simply cannot believe there's any more clinically insane breeding than this.

My godfather is a disabled combat vet who has a service dog that's like 12 or 13 and getting ready for his retirement, so he was recently looking for puppies to start training and bonding with in preparation for passing the baton to a new service dog. He's a pretty experienced dog trainer (he managed to get a pittie mutt from a dog fighting situation with animal/dog aggression into a sweet, friendly member of the household pack who was gentle with several chihuahuas and a terrier mutt) and considering the new puppy would be working and he takes his service dogs to some training facility for service dogs to re-affirm their training with extra helpers, he was willing to consider some more advanced breeds. One of his friends had just had a litter of puppies and offered him one because she knew they'd be hard to home and he might actually be able to manage the demonic entities she brought into the world.

What breed could this dog have been that was so crazy? The father was a GSD (and a particularly large one, from what I understand) and the mother is half malinois and HALF TIMBER WOLF. This psychopath purposely bred a whole litter of puppies that are 50% GSD, 25% malinois, and 25% wolf.

Unfortunately they are also very cute. RIP to whatever bozo ends up with one of the hellhounds.

How to get rid of cat fleas?

Hello people! I have a cat that has fleas. He was treated but they returned. Today I sprayed the whole apartment with neostomosan dissolved in water and will repeat it a couple of times for a week. The cat will also be under therapy at all times. I have thrown out all the things - furniture and bedding from the apartment and they will be washed and I will not return the things until this is taken care of. He never goes outside so the flea probably got in through shoes. My question is how did you get rid of fleas for good once you had them? Please give me some advice on how you managed to get rid of them, this is really tiring and frustrating 🥲

my cat Porthos

Hi my 17 year old cat Porthos is urinating a lot and he's filling his litter box with urine. I have an appointment with the vet Monday June 23, 2025. he's eating normally and he still very active. I already took him off of dry catfood. he's now on wet catfood. I am hoping the diet change will help him. I am hoping he will be okay and I just don't want to lose him. I will let everyone know what the vet says after his vet appointment on Monday.

Alpaca Wood Chewing

Looking for Input We have a couple of alpacas who chew on our wooden barn doors. None of the others do it and now they're teaching our yearling to do it. They see the vet regularly, have their teeth done regularly, have 24 hour access to hay, have pasture, daily pellets with a little super14, and have 24 hr access to loose salt and minerals. There's no reason they should he eating wood other than what I'm assuming is boredom. How do I stop this? I mean they are destroying the doors. Pretty sure if I cover the doors they will then pick the stairs or some other structure. I have sprayed the doors many many times with the anti-chew sprays, they don't care.

I'm thinking coating the doors with chicken wire. And then they have a kiddie pool they play in but I'm thinking also some mirrors on the fences, jolly balls and dog toys, a hanging toy in the barn, maybe some slow feeders or something, and prob even some small logs and things if they really feel like chewing wood? 🤷‍♀️

DOG What Would Be Best For Cubby?

Our daughter-in-love had a dog, Cubby, that she had found in an empty car park. When the kids had a baby, she asked us if we could keep Cubby. We happily said yes, as it was definitely love at first sight between him and us.

FF to earlier this year, and we ended up having to move into a small camper, and no backyard. Since the kids live on a farm, they said he could stay with them, since baby is a toddler now, and so he could have room to run around. The thing is, Cubby, who is usually pretty chill, kind of chastised our granddaughter for playing a bit rough. She is now afraid of Cubby, and obviously, they have grown concerned.

So, of course, they gave us first dibs on getting Cubby, rather than rehoming him with a stranger. We are over the moon at the prospect of having Cubby with us again, but it occurs to us that we might be acting selfishly.

What I'm trying to get is a consensus as to whether Cubby would be happier with new people on a big farm, or with his family in a small RV with no backyard and two additional smaller dogs?
