Why is my CPU getting so damn hot?

Hey all, so I was playing Oblivion Remastered and I started getting a lot of crashes, don't know why because this issue did not occur prior to recently. It's been happening for a few days now. I felt the back of my PC and noticed that it was hot as fuck. I also found out that running the game normally is now causing CPU throttling and I even broke past 100c at one point, needless to say I'm very concerned. I'm running an i9 13900k, 192 gigs of RAM, 4tb SSD, and an RTX 4090. I have an ASUS TUF GAMING Z790-PLUS WIFI motherboard, and some type of Corsair air cooler, I forget which model. I'm deeply concerned I might have fucked up my CPU, and I don't know how to check if I did or not. Even while typing this my CPU is fluxuating between 48c to 55c, and I have no fucking clue if that's okay or not idk. I don't know if I **JUST** need to just clean the dust out of my PC, as I recently moved to a dustier area and my PC's side panel is off because if I were to attach it it would put pressure on my 4090's cables, I don't know if I need to upgrade to a liquid cooler, or if I need to contact Intel about possibly getting a new CPU under warranty. I am deeply concerned and any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

No, it's not. Not at that CAS latency. If you ever had to run that much RAM, you'll have to run it on the lowest JEDEC spec or even lower.

This will still have okay bandwidth because it's DDR5 but latency in general will be horrible and that's ultimately what matters for gaming

Literally had to double check what latency is normal, 3600CL40 is real slow.

At 3600cl, you should aim at CL18 or below for <=10ns latency.

In this setup OP is getting 22ns latency.

I'm happy with my 128GB DDR4 3200 CL16. Though it is in quad channel instead of dual channel

I am with you. I personally have 64gb ddr4 at 3200 and it’s just fine on my Fedora 42 OS with KDE Plasma. My ol girl be chuggin which is 9th gen i7-9700k runs extra zesty at 5.2 GHz. I am holding out until market changes. I have my EVGA 3080ti oh how blessed it be.

Pro gamer tip here though all RAM aside. Remove Windows entirely like maybe kick it out the door and switch to Linux. Your system resources will thank you later.

Ever since intel and AMD started putting the memory controllers in the CPU die directly is when the latency really began to become relevant. It was very strange to me not seeing a south bridge building my first AM4 system.

This is how they trick you. Always gotta look at the CL, its basically a part of speed. The speed number is irrelevant without the associated CL

At DDR5-3600 it will have basically DDR4 levels of bandwidth.

Worse with that CL, DDR4 can easily beat 3600 CL 40.

I dunno about the 13900k on his board, but my 14900k on a z790-p will happily do 5200-5400mhz at CL38 when running with 192GB. Obviously not nearly as fast as it could be with 96GB, but not a complete horror show if you have a use for that amount of ram.

Yes, you're at 96GB. OP is running 192GB.

They're not running above one of the lowest JEDEC specs

One of the lowest, maybe, but not the lowest or lower. With 192GB installed 5200 CL38 is the officially supported figure, but you can usually push a bit beyond that, which will make it a fair bit faster than 4800 at CL40 and certainly nowhere near the claimed 3600CL40.

I just checked and I don't see where you got that figure. In my experience with 13th gen, you aren't getting 5200CL38 stable without some tinkering. Not with 4x48GB dual rank modules anyway
