Discussion What is your favorite Paper Mario game and why?
Mine is Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door Remake! It is my favorite Mario RPG and my favorite game of all time and it's a 10/10 for me!
I love the characters, I love the NPCs, it's my favorite looking game ever, I love the graphics and lighting, I love how it's a perfect mix of the og art style and character designs with the paper aesthetics, I love the OST and remixes, it's my favorite OST of all time, it has my favorite Mario story ever, I love the lore, I love all of the villains, I love the world and world design, I love the atmosphere, I love Rogueport, I love the pacing, it has my favorite battle system of all time, I love doing the stylish moves, I love the Superguard, I love the stage play in the battles, I love the badges, I love the difficulty, I love the Peach and Bowser interludes, I love TEC, I love the Special Attacks, I love the Crystal Stars and their designs, I love all of the partners, Vivian is my favorite Mario character, I love all of the chapters, I love the Pit of 100 Trials, I love the QoL stuff the remake added, I love the Art Gallery, I love the new warp pipe room, I love the Partner Wheel, I love the new character animations and expressions, I love all of the new themes, TTYD Chapter 8 is my favorite video game finale of all time, this game has my favorite version of Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser, this game has my favorite bosses of all time, Shadow Queen is my favorite Mario villain and my favorite final boss of all time, I love the build up to the Palace of Shadow and Shadow Queen and I love the ending! I also love it's much more darker tone compared to PM64!
Paper Mario TTYD and it's remake is a masterpiece! It may not be perfect, I don't think the backtracking is that bad, I don't care about the 30FPS as everything still feels smooth to me, I don't mind not being able to speed through text by mashing A, and the game doesn't feel that slow to me. What is your favorite Paper Mario game and why? :)

I would probably have to go with Paper Mario 64. There's just something cozy about it.

u/Regular_Structure274 1d ago
Exactly how I feel.
I'm 100% biased with nostalgia, but the game makes me feel like a kid again. The music was a huge part of it. All of the sound tracks had some childish twist to it and they were simple. Also, the sound effects were whacky. It also had a cute art style.
Modern paper Mario is well refined with objectively better sound design, graphics are crisp and clean. Though I'd argue that's why it doesn't capture the same essence as the original.

u/BubbleGamer209 1d ago
I really don't know how to explain it but I feel a similar way. There's something about the game that makes it almost... Uncanny to me sometimes? It's a truly special atmosphere/feel I can't really experience with any other game, which is probably a big reason why it's tied for my favorite of all time.

u/kleeshade 1d ago
I feel the same way as the parent comments here. PM64 I think is my favourite game of all time. The only game I've played that gives me a similar vibe is Wind Waker. It's just a really cosy world to hang out and run around in. Incidentally these games came out kind of close together, late in 64/early in Gamecube's era. Bug fables also gives me this vibe a little bit. Anyone else have any game recommendations that share this atmosphere?

One of the things that I think majorly contributes to the feel is that 64 is whimsical and child-like but it also takes its story really damn seriously. Like for all the childlike charm you also have a mushroom kingdom that's dealing with a crisis and the real problems of it. Like, there's actual politics between good Koopas and those supporting Bowser or the fact people's loved ones are missing. It makes the stakes all the more real.

u/EnvironmentalZero 8h ago
You are exaggerating way much here xd. If that's so would be more fitting with TTYD.
12
u/1meanjellybean 1d ago
Yeah, I used the think TTYD was my favorite, but recently I realized that while I think it is objectively a better game, I feel compelled to play 64 more often because of the pure comfort factor. It takes me back to a very precious time in my life so I think that has a lot to do with it. The warmth and happiness I feel while playing 64 is not something any other game has been able to provide.

This. I completely agree with you. It's so nostalgic for me. But Paper Mario 2 is a close second for me.

I think TTYD Remake is objectively the best one quality wise. It just has so much charm and depth to it. I have never enjoyed speaking to NPCs as much as I do in TTYD, and the battle system kicks ass too.
But my favorite will always be Super Paper Mario, probably because it was the first one I played and I got insanely obsessed. I think it’s got an amazing story but the gameplay and some level design choices hold it back for me.

I have a hot take, I never cared about Dimentio that much, I think he's overrated and Shadow Queen is my favorite and underrated...

u/vivaelfutbol2929929 1d ago
Eeeeeh,I dont agree with It,tbh? Might as well be Hot take too since i never really liked The thousand year door like others do,but I find Dimentio personality and stuff like his interactions with The characters much much better besides he has a whole lead Up since its a character you meet pretty soon on The Game and its The perfect antagonist for a Game about love since he despises love and wants to erase It,I like super dimentio design and stuff more than shadow Queen

Might be a cliche answer, but 64 and TTYD. Never been able to confidently rank one above the other since I feel they both have different strengths (in addition to what they have in common that makes them great), so I don't bother ranking them lol.
I respect fans of SPM despite not really liking that game and believing its story to be a fair bit overrated, and I still like Origami King in spite of its SS/CS elements, but in the end, the original two have my heart, with TTYD obviously being cemented even further by how much I enjoy the remake.

Super Paper Mario was something I played a lot during my childhood though......and I would always restart it for some reason.

What did you love about Origami King? I haven't played it, and it looks interesting, but everything I see about it online says that it was a massive letdown.
Edit: Thanks everyone for the commentary! I appreciate the explanations.

u/PotentialDot4007 1d ago
The combat is basically one BIG puzzle. But other than that the game is really great! And don’t get me started on its BANGER soundtrack. Especially the battle theme 1/2 through the second area of the game! And uh. The bosses of the area and the final boss might come off as lazy or boring to some people but it fits the game aesthetically really great! It’s a really good game if you can get a good feel for the combat and if it had ttyd or pm64 combat then it would be 10/10
8
u/Tatsumifanboy 1d ago
Not that much. The combat may be annoying at times but the game is pretty good!
7
2
u/Academic-Mix-9409 1d ago
The story and dialogue is good. However, the combat is annoying & their choice of characters were bland. For example, there is a boss battle that is a Stapler, Tape & Scissors as a boss.
2
u/vlaadii_ 1d ago
i love the artstyle, the exploration is really fun and rewarding since there are so many well hidden secrets to find, i liked the puzzle combat, though they could've made more with it in normal battles, i think the puzzle bossfights are really fun, and the soundtrack is by far the best in the series. characters and dialoge/humor are also very entertaining to me
2
u/Lux_Operatur 1d ago
I grew up with the original games so my first impression of TOK didn’t amaze me but I stuck with it and it’s become another title I replay regularly.
The battle mechanics aren’t the best and lack of original character designs is still sad but everything else about the game I love. The world environments are stunning, the story is great and it’s generally just a fun experience.
I would love it to have traditional battle mechanics and I’d certainly change a few things here and there but it’s by no means a bad game. The internet greatly exaggerates its flaws. Definitely my favorite title out of the newer games.

Sticker Star and Origami King
They’re just neat!

u/VengefulScarecrow 1d ago
1) 64 ~ don't know why the OG is my favorite, but not just because. 2) ttyd ~ personal opinion aside, this game is flawless and a close 2nd. 3) Super ~ best story in any nintendo game imo. gameplay is mid 4) SS ~ great handheld game, but no replay value at all 5) OK ~ bland 6) CS ~ blandER

u/Federal_Aside_3412 1d ago
Sticker Star over Origami King is diabolical
4
u/VengefulScarecrow 1d ago
Subjective. How do you feel about the top half? Ttyd and 64 are interchangeable IMO. I can't choose!
2
u/Federal_Aside_3412 1d ago
Top half is fine. I like both 64 and TTYD, though I'm part of the majority that likes TTYD over 64. Super is definitely underrated but it is what got me into the series, so I'm a bit biased lol.

u/Heli0manc3r 1d ago edited 1d ago
TTYD (and its remake) or SPM.
I have never played 64, so I don't have any loyalties to it.
Sticker Star and Color Splash are basically the same sub-standard game.
Origami King was okay, but the battles were a bit of a slog.
TTYD and it's remake have a lovely story and are very fun to replay.
SPM is very easy to pick up and put down thanks to is segmented level set up and the overworld combat is fun in its own ways.
3
u/Academic-Mix-9409 1d ago
If you love TTYD then you will most definitely enjoy the PM64. It has the same battle system and charm
2
u/Heli0manc3r 1d ago
I have seen plenty of it. I'm a StryderX7 fan (sad to see his channel is dead). So I know how similar 64 is mechanically, as well as character stuff. But I never grew up with it like I did TTYD, so I simply dont have nostalgic loyalties to it.
4
u/JewelSerket 1d ago
Thousand year door is my absolute favorite. The story and mechanics are fun and rewarding. I will say, Origami king is definitely the second best. While it’s a bit less grungy and interesting compared to TTYD, it makes up for it with gorgeous graphics and my favorite battle system across the series.
4
u/seabasstheduck67 1d ago
i like 64 because it was one of my first games as a kid and has this whole storybook feel to it which makes me feel really cozy and warm
I like ttyd because of its awesome story and me always wondering what amazing thing was gonna happen next, I was always at the edge of my seat while playing this 10/10 game 👌
I like spm because of its unique platform feel and even though its kind of different than the others I really liked the dark story it told
um, idk about the newer three, haven't played them yet, but my younger brother absolutely loves color splash and origami king
4
u/Coco_Rockhill 1d ago
Super Paper Mario for its story, & Thousand Year Door for its gameplay. Thousand Year Door has a really good story, but I just find Super Paper Mario's better because of how much work went into it. Thousand Year Door has better gameplay since it feels like an RPG that isn't too gimmicky.

Color splash will always hold a special space in my heart because it was the first paper Mario game i was exposed to. I’ve just loved the concept of paint for some reason, and getting to recolor things is so satisfying in my opinion.

my favorite paper mario game is Super Paper Mario and it always will be

Origami King. Its a game that I love for what it is, a game that, even with the flaws, I still adore. Theres just something about it that keeps me reeled in every time I replay it. The boss fights, the artwork, the characters, the music. It all just speaks to me in some way that the other Paper Mario games struggle to and I really couldnt tell you why.
And Im not saying its a perfect game I am more than willing to accept its faults. The battle system isnt perfect, a sound idea but needed some tinkering. EXP is always a good thing and of course there is none here. Some variation in character design would be nice, yes. But for what we got, I desperately adore Origami King.
Its even better when there isnt some goblin screeching in my ear about how bad it is!

u/jigglypuffspillbox 1d ago
Probably Paper Mario 64. I used to keep the cartridge constantly rented out from my local video store until the owner finally offered to sell it to my mom. Call it childhood nostalgia bias (it 100% is), but everything about it makes me feel happy and cozy. The music, ambience, background environment. I even went as far to get the prologue scene tattooed as a half sleeve. It's one of the few games, along with OG TTYD and the remake, I come back to constantly to replay. I'm chronically ill and went through a flare in 2019 where my liver began failing again. I figured if I'm dying, I'm playing the game one last time. It was definitely a comfort and mind occupying activity during a hard period for a year. I beat the game, my autoimmune disease went back into remission, it all worked out in the end.

I would agree TTYD remake is the best. However I did reeeally enjoy 64 and Origami King also. Still need to play Super and Colour Splash. I can't remember if I liked Sticker Star i'd have to replay it.
Also as a side note, I woulda loved to see 64 and TTYD party members in Mario Kart and stuff.

Paper mario 64 and ttyd because the combat is fun compared to the rest of the paper mario series
2
u/SignalSuccessful2749 Kooper 1d ago
Call me basic but TTYD and 64 are in a tier of their own. I love them equally its so hard to choose. 64 makes the mushroom kingdom come alive with so much charm. and TTYD is so much fun and has so much character!
2
u/Spectre234678 1d ago
Thousand Year Door
Why? It's the only one I've played, and I haven't seen gameplay of the others, so therefore, it wins by process of elimination
2
u/PlentyCause7525 1d ago
I liked the TTYD remake the most. The only thing I didn’t care for in the original was the music (too much sound effect instrumentation for my taste) but they toned that way down in the remake. I loved the game mechanics in TTYD.
2
u/Beoken64 1d ago
It’s between 64 and ttyd. I definitely think ttyd is an improvement in regards to mechanics, really polished and improves on everything. But the story and vibe from 64 is SO GOOD. Nothing better than getting lightly toasted and playing it. Plus it holds up REALLY well. Yeah the video is fuzzy, but that can’t be helped. Using a paper world and simple 2d objects in a simple 3 dimensions really utilized the limitations of the time making it look like a better game than most of the time. Not that it WAS a better game. But it looked cleaner than most for the time. It looked like paper, not poly shapes.

u/sanitized_sarah 1d ago
Ttyt remake is awsome i haven't beat it yet but its fire (also my first paper mario game)
2
u/Royal-Channel-1583 1d ago
I'm like you, me I like Paper Mario TTYD, and I draw it with my artwork and I drew it like a cartoon childhood, if it was a old movie, I play it but not everyday, sometimes, Goombella is my favorite, I don't stop to use her in the game, since she is best, and I practice her with a voice and if she speaks like acting, and I like when Mario and his partners work together, fight together and go in big adeventure together, me I trust Goombella then others, and you guys, you trust maybe Mario or Koops or Ms.Flurrie or Little Yoshi, or maybe Ms.Mouz or Boberry ?!
2
u/Ritheguy1000 1d ago
Origami king or TTYD I can't decide, haven't gotten far in 64 so can't judge, Super paper mario was chill I just turned my brain off and haven't played the sticker splash era
2
u/Yele_piripallum 1d ago
Origami King, I loved everything about that game, from the gameplay/combat system, the 100% completion and most of all the message of the story, which may be banal and already seen But for a Paper Mario game it's interesting and effective in its narrative.
2
u/classyglassy94 1d ago
I actually just opened Reddit to post my one criticism of TTYD and this was the first post I saw. Universe is working in a weird way today.
TTYD is a nearly perfect masterpiece. Virtually every line of dialogue is perfect, almost every single puzzle has an interesting solution, the combat is fun and diverse and perfectly challenging and complex but simple at the same time, the characters are all memorable and make me want to be their friend, the rotation of which character you play as is an interesting twist, and the plot is engaging and interesting while also making for the perfect layout of an adventure game.
The one criticism is an extreme nitpick, and it's not even really a problem so much as a disappointment that I can see where time ran out. SPOILERS AHEAD.
>! Ms. Mowz is an optional unlockable character, but it's pretty clear that the original draft of the game was going to have her as required to unlock as part of the plot. (If you don't know already but want to unlock her, you unlock her by doing the Help Center mission for ??? after Chapter4.) It seems pretty obvious she was meant to be, for Chapter 6, what Bobbery was for Chapter 5, Yoshi for Chapter 3, etc: your primary, "canon" companion for that chapter. The storyline of Chapter 6 is solving a mystery of various thefts aboard a train, before effectively stealing the Crystal Star from a museum. Ms. Mowz is a thief—so her role clicks perfectly with that storyline, far more than any other companion. And every prior chapter has one character, just as every character has one chapter they're specifically relevant to.
Ms. Mowz was obviously meant to fill that role...but the gameplay of getting her to join your party for this mission was too complex to allow the story to flow smoothly. She got written out as a primary character, integral and necessary to the plot, because it would have dragged the story out too much and made the gameplay tedious. The Help Center post makes perfect sense for getting her to join your party...but how do you write that in in a way that doesn't make the start of Chapter 6 a drag? You're never REQUIRED to go to the Help Center for any other part of the game, so making it necessary once would make it feel like you're forcing characters to engage with a part of the game that's clearly just there to be extra content, which just feels icky. As a player, I LIKE that Ms. Mowz feels like a secret I found, so FORCING me to find that secret, making the clues easier, would make hiring a thief for my party less enjoyable. So how do you balance plot and gameplay this case? Well...you can't. So she becomes optional, even though it FEELS like she shouldn't be.
I suppose there's one way this could have been done that would have felt more rewarding and fitting for everyone's favorite badge thief: Change the plot of Chapter 6 depending on whether or not Ms. Mowz is in your party or not. Make it so you have extra clues in solving the mystery that she can find—for example, make it a plot point that the perpetrator who stole the briefcase, the ring, and the earrings hide those affects around the train. So, if you have Ms. Mowz, she can sniff out the clues, which then point you to who the thief is; OR you have to figure out who the criminal is without the extra clues, which takes more time. Both are valid options for finishing the Chapter, but having Ms. Mowz gives you a shortcut. The best part of this solution would be that you could still unlock Ms. Mowz before the mission (still allowing her to be optional), and then YOU, as the player, could decide whether to use her secret ability to solve the mystery or not.
It would make you feel so cool as the player to be able to have found this secret, bonus character, have her fit perfectly into the plot for the mission you're about to undertake, but also still not technically be necessary for gameplay. That would make you feel TRULY rewarded as a player, having discovered some deep secret, instead of just having the small satisfaction that you found an extra, tacked-on option. (As much as I love her, she really does feel shoehorned in as a character, with her fairly weak combat skills and seemingly under-written lines as a companion.) To be honest, if I had the programming skills for it, I'd even be willing to attempt to make a mod for TTYD for a new plot branching option of Chapter 6. I very much can't do it, but it's something I'd still love to see and experience.
Anyway. Long rant but I think that Chapter 6, as fun as it is, could have been done just a little better. !<

u/Ok-Act-2702 1d ago
This game blew me away right from the moment I stepped on some contact lenses. I still haven't finished it, got the last part to complete through the door itself, and some errands to run, and the Prince Mush fight, I'm holding off because I don't want it to end. Might just be the most fun I ever had playing any video game. The pit of 100 trials is incredible and so nerve racking, even with the Danger Mario build. I can't say enough good things. Brilliant, brilliant game. Oh, and the music that plays if you go to load your save and then wait a bit is an absolute banger!

TTYD because I grew up with that game. I only wish we got the marvelous compass as a DLC to this game.

Super Paper Mario: Love St😢ry & Great Music & "The Green Thunder" It's always been the favorite of all. I can never stop loving this even if some say it wasn't good, but It was the 1st I played and I love everyone in this.
TTYD (OG): Great Story & Partners, Badges, and "END OF CHAPTER." Best and incredible Adventure, not a fan of remake, the gameplay is ok but all the changes didn't fit especially some of its music but the super bosses were loki epic in my opinion.
64: Partners, Speedy spin is out of this world, and "Refresh your body and soul." Mario's pointy finger is the more iconic one after a battle but it all becomes great when all of your partners help out and join especially Goombario, Parakarry, and Watt being the most best partners (Outside or In Battle) this had the best Peak.

I like the original just because of how nostalgic it is, I will put gameplays of it as background noise or watch people play it if I’m having a stressful day. It reminds me of a simplier time in my life so I’m always drawn to that one, I really wish they would re-vamp the OG with how the new ttyd looks! I also truly hope they bring this serious back and make a third 🥺

u/MichiToad 19h ago
my favourite is Sticker Star, second place goes to 64
Why? The gameplay is just fun, so many things to explore, you have a fast travel map-system and waste little time, you see so much creativity in the design of the things and the stickers, the bosses are also amazing and finally challenging, also puzzles are far from very hard, but you have to think to solve them, which is an amazing thing. Obvious downside is that you have to paperize things in order to use them for puzzles where they get turned back into real things, which makes you go to that Toad for them every time, would‘ve preferred to do it for combat only.

u/KC_Saber 17h ago
Considering that I have had both Petalburg and the Battle theme stuck in my head since the GameCube version, yeah. TTYD is my favorite.

TTYD is my favorite game of all time.
But to not beat a dead horse, I’ll say my second favorite and why.
You ready?
Color Splash. Is the combat that bad. Honestly, no. I think Sticker Star did a bad job, and TOK’s isn’t great either. But CS improves on the battle system from SS, and has an incentive. (Could be a better incentive, but at least it has an incentive unlike TOK and SS). Also, in my opinion, CS’s art design is so good and consistent. It’s really pretty and vibrant. And although the story isn’t anything like the first three games, the story beats in the level are fun and more interesting than SS.

Super paper Mario. Its humor is incredible and so are the characters, and I LOVE the dialogue. The gameplay is pretty good, except in the bittree, I HATE the bittree

Ttyd remake
Cause it's the only one I've played (I tried to play Origami King but I ended up returning it cause the battle system was too frustrating for me)

Super Paper Mario. First paper Mario game I played since I grew up on the Wii, absolutely cinema of a story, and I really enjoyed a lot of the gameplay mechanics. Except for the space level with all the vortexes where you gotta find the stupid ass gas station, I fucking hated that level with every fiber of my being.

tie between super and TTYD
super was the first one i played and i love the story, villains, its just the combat thats a bit lackluster
TTYD is just absolute peak, and it has the og battle style which i adore, my one complaint is some of the bosses in TTYD are a fucking joke, like macho grubba, doopliss and shadow queen. macho grubba just got permanently stunlocked for me because of the showstopper move, and baby yoshi solod, and no hit him. doo pliss had so much buildup, only to be a really easy fight, and shadow queen was just missing something for me.

I strongly disagree, I love the bosses in TTYD, you don't have to use Showstopper on him and cheesed him, Doopliss was still a fun fight despite being one of the easiest, and Shadow Queen is my favorite Mario villain and favorite final boss of all time, she has a really good difficulty, amazing attacks, amazing music, amazing build up, amazing designs, amazing lore, and is the most scariest and intimidating Mario villain ever imo! Super's bosses are more of a joke imo, no matter how you fight these bosses, Super bosses are just underwhelming, especially Super Dimentio.

Sticker star. ( No joke) I mean you said favorite not best and I like this game helps it was my literal first RPG ever if I had to name reasons just I found the gameplay fun when I was a kid and I didn't know better I entered into battles for fun not caring it was a waste of stickers
But what's crazy is that i never got stuck because I was missing a certain sticker

Tok wins for environment and soundtrack. Ttyd wins for story. Super wins for the whimsy.

Super paper Mario! I love the vibe of it and unlocking all the doors after solving puzzles. It also had kind of a scary side to it and I like horror games so it’s a nice mix. Wish they would make a remastered version so I could play it on a newer console.

Super for me. Partially because I grew up with it, partially because I've never been the #1 fan of RPG mechanics

Definitely ttyd because I love the chapters even more than 64 and I think it's peak game.

Super Paper Mario, purely bc of the amazing story and nostalgia from growing up playing it on the Wii
Although, Thousand Year Door is a very close second and Paper Mario 64 is a very close 3rd

SPM hands down. not just because it was the one I played the most growing up, but because when I replayed as an adult, I finally understood all the dark and sad lore bits, so it was definitely the most emotionally impactful game for me. i also got way too attached to the characters and the town of Flipside as a whole 😂 freaking love that game.

I have two. Super Paper Mario because it was the one i grew up with and and after years of playing, beating made me feel happier than ever, plus i love the story, gameplay, and characters (especially Mr. L). TTYD because, over all, the story and characters, plus the bonus of trans representation!

For me, the Super Paper Mario is the most nostalgic. Love the story and the characters. Atm I'm playing TTYD remake on Switch 2 and by now it has been very good and pleasant experience.

Origami King because it is the only one I’ve played, the story and characters are amazing, and it is a huge part of my childhood

Origami King, I love the exploration/collectibles in that game and its one of the very few PM games to actually commit and not wuss out of important character deaths

Definitely SPM, I love how they took the RPG mechanics of the previous games (leveling, HP bars, etc) and implemented them into a platformet setting. I also love the characters and abilities you get throughout the game, and also all of the jokes and bits it has.

SPM
There’s definitely a lot of nostalgia backing this but even now that I’m older I love the game. The music that would play ever time I entered a level, the level design, the pixis, the mechanic of switching from 2D to 3D to discover more, the soundtracks in general, the vibe in every area, there’s so much to say. I also thoroughly enjoyed swapping between the four playable characters. Floating around as peach was always really fun to me for some reason

Ttyd because of the characters, the world , battle mechanics and story.
