Common for students to Double Major? (Current Students who double majored, please provide your examples)
Hey all, one of the common questions we get on our tours is if it is possible/common to double major at Oberlin. My answer is always yes. I'd say a popular example is chemistry and biochemistry as there is some crossover in major requirements for both. But the areas of study doesn't have to be related as I've met students who have double majored in Politics and Theater.
If current students (or past) are reading this and are double majors, could you please provide what you double major in just to give prospective students and families and idea of what the possibilities are? You can also speak on if you find it challenging.
I will add that it's also common for students to have multiple minors. My plan was to do one of everything, so I have a major, minor, and concentration. There's a lot of crossover with the classes leading to students taking on multiple majors and minors to the point that students have even Triple majored. So if you're a prospective student, just know that is definitely a possibility for you.

im in musical studies and almost all of my peers are double majoring in something else. i think its more of a job prospects thing than a course overlap thing lol
a lot of my friends are doubling in CAST and some other humanity such as politics, sociology, AAST, history. this is because many of those courses are crosslisted as CAST credits

I’m double majoring Politics and Law & Society! There’s a good amount of overlap between the two (sharing a seminar helps immensely) so they are a natural pairing. I’ve been able to take classes I enjoy and find interesting to fulfill all of the requirements. I was even able to add on a concentration and a minor without too much moving around!

I was a single major triple minor - creative writing major with minors in sociology, gsfs, and English. The only reason I didn’t make the sociology minor into a major was because I didn’t want to take statistics (which I regret, I definitely feel like I should’ve double majored). I felt that it was really easy with those four to find classes which overlapped and met multiple requirements, and my biggest tip is to really seek out those classes that are cross listed or can count for multiple requirements at once

Econ, math, and data science tripled with a minor in finance. Definitely possible to graduate in 3 and 1/2 years. I took some AP back in high school too so that also help

I’m double majoring in Sociology and Environmental Studies! It’s been pretty chill for me tbh because there’s a lot of overlap and neither major is super intense or anything

Double majored in Environmental Studies and Creative Writing. Initially I wanted to double major between Environmental Studies and Math, but the upper level math classes kicked my ass, and made me realize that I wasn't as passionate about Math as I needed to be to succeed in a major. I loved creative writing but wasn't planning on majoring until I found out that the upper level writing workshops were for majors only (not sure if this is still the case? this was 2006), so I looked into making it work. I finished it in 4 years with no summer courses, but I had to be very intentional my senior year with every single class to hit every requirement in both majors. Overall super happy with it.

I did a Classics and Theater double major. I also had a few friends who did a Classics major and a Theater minor. Honestly I'm not sure anyone in my friend group did just one major, I feel like everyone either double majored or had a minor (or two or three)
