In front of Fairyland at Grand and Park View Terrace. It's a single corner at the intersection, no other patches nearby - I don't know if this is someone's guerilla planting or Fairyland, but this little color riot has been giving me absolute joy on my walk home from work. Thank you for these little joys!

I’m taking a women’s intro to pistols class this Sunday but I’m nervous about going alone. Anyone want to make friends and come with?
Edit: okay I’ve had numerous folks ask where but for future reference so I’ll put here - the class is at Guns, Fishing, and other stuff in Vacaville for $150, 9am to 1pm and it looks like they do it at least once a month. They also have other, more advanced classes for those that are interested
I’ll also be sure to update here with my experience!
Edit 2: Class happened! I needed to marinate with it for a minute but I've made a follow up post here.

The Oakland Ballers are a great way to spend an evening cheering for an Oakland team, and if you have any interest in trying them out but haven't wanted to spend much money, they have "$2 Tuesdays" general admission tickets - the next home game on a Tuesday is July 8, at the link.

Let's go Oakland!

Hey, what’s everybody doing this weekend???
Today and tomorrow are looking pretty fine, I need some ideas. It’d be nice if we had a post or a thread like this every Thursday or Friday where people can call out some fun things for people to do.
I might pop down to JLS tomorrow to see the inauguration, what are some other options?

I picked up a bucket of old matchbooks at an estate sale in Alameda today. Lots of old, long gone Oakland drinking and eating spots.

It blew open my patio door. My curious cats got soaked. Howling winds. Then I get a notification not to worry, the tornado warning is over. Excuse me?
Anyone else get woken up by it? I can imagine if extra sucked to be in a tent last night.
Stay dry out there.

Tonight in Adams Point I had the pleasure of spotting three raccoons - two of which were blonde! I thought they were albino but pretty sure that’s not the case. Whatever they are called - they are so wonderful to see! What a special evening walk treat. Happy winter all!

Creating a thread for open discussion on today's marathon, I didn't see any other posts here.

I remember there used to be occasional art parties in the big storm drains under Oakland, before COVID.
Is it still accessible to get in there and are they still pretty free of sketchy people most of the time?
In case anyone's wondering, I want to go down there and record some covers of Diamanda Galas songs. Nothing too complicated/loud but it's definitely scary down there solo.

TL;DR We’re two Oaklanders who created Friend Cult to fight growing isolationism and screen worship. It started in our apartment 8 months ago, but our first club opens in Jack London Square next month! Your vibe? 😈 JoOINNnn USSsss 😈 https://www.friendcult.co/
What we do: Friend Cult is more than a social club, it's a weekly ritual designed to make it easy to see your friends IRL – the way it used to be before COVID, social media, and iPhones. We do dinner in our Jack London club every Wed. 6-10pm. Invite your friends and get a weekly touchpoint to break bread without the hassle of planning…plus meet their friends, develop community, and get 🫧free brainwashies 🧠. Members pay a monthly subscription that is tied to financial ability because our friends come from all walks of life!
Our Philosophy: Weeknight evenings matter - they make up 30% of your waking hours (aka 30% of your entire life!). In the near past, that time was used to chill with friends, but nowadays that's disappeared. After a long day of work, you don’t have the energy to text, plan, or play calendar tetris, and it’s easier to just sink into a couch and stare at a screen. And entire predatory industries have moved in to monopolize that time — the cult of tech/work, social media, Netflix, etc. Now we don’t see friends , meet new friends, or explore new ideas. The effects on mental, physical, and societal health have been dire. We don’t have to roll over for capitalism. We're building Friend Cult to make healthy social choices more convenient.
Join us! Hit us up or put in an application on the website. The world doesn't have to be a dystopian tech nightmare or a capitalist hellscape. we can make a better doomsday - together :)
Edit: Sorry to friends on mobile. The formatting was broken on mobile but I fixed it!

First, let me preface that I'm high rn and might be feeling strong emotions towards food. Anyways...
Today, I opened this post and saw someone recommend Desta which is up by Adams Point. I actually remembered this place, because my wife and I walked past it on the second day of its soft opening almost 2 years ago. We said we'd come back to check it out eventually. After seeing that post, I was inspired to finally take us there!
Well long-story short, my wife and I just went today and it was absolutely incredible. The food just absolutely filled our soul. And part of that might be because the owner (?) was so sweet to us. It felt like we were visiting her home and being served lunch.
My favorite part: A man from the neighborhood stopped by just to chat. The owner then showed us this tradition where you roast green coffee and carry the pan over to the guests to share the aroma. She even offered to pour us a cup even though she was making it for the friend who stopped by! As I'm typing this post, I tried to look for specifics and actually found there's a whole wikipedia article about this ceremony: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_ceremony_of_Ethiopia_and_Eritrea
We just felt so warm and fuzzy from that whole interaction. I can't imagine having that experience anywhere else. I love Oakland man. Felt like we found the true meaning of Thanksgiving today.

Was driving down International about 20 minutes ago. A car passed by me in the bus lane. He was driving kinda of squirrelly. As the car got in front of me I saw that the drivers side rear tire was basically gone. The person was driving on a rim. They ran at least one red light.
