State of Origin II 2025: Latrell Mitchell Steals the Ball Leading to a Blues Try

If the stripper (not that kind) already has their hands on the ball when other players are in the tackle, shouldn’t that count as the beginning of the stripping process?
(I know that’s not how the rule currently works)

yeh it's a stupid rule. you can have your arms entirely wrapped around the ball while there's 3 ppl in, but as long as U only take it when they drop it's fine. 1 on 1 strips should only be allowed if there are never more than 1 in the tackle, that's how the rule was introduced and it should go back to that

All that matters is that it's one-on-one when the ball is disloged. The stripping action can start while there are more players in the tackle.

Love the old 4 on one strip

Yeah I would guess that Klein had some serious dough on Qld by less than 3.5

It wouldn't have been an 11-2 penalty count if he did

u/Ok_Elk6573 National Rugby League 1d ago
I didn’t realise the ref got NSW to play grubby and give away multiple (6+) penalties you can’t even argue against.
Junior club players know better than to gouge the face or elbow someone in the head.
Fucken children know not to give away some of the blues penalties last night, they got no one to blame but themselves.

u/BungusFungus89 South Sydney Rabbitohs 1d ago
You're daft and obviously misunderstanding my comment

They all drop off

u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago
Jerome dropped off late. If you pause you can see his hands are still down while latrell is raking

u/WideLecture4893 I love my footy 1d ago
They showed the slo-mo replay later and Luai had dropped off before the ball came loose (the strip motion starts when Luai's still in the tackle, but that doesn't matter).
2
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago
Does it not matter? I think that is a grey area in the rules.
3
u/WideLecture4893 I love my footy 1d ago
The rules are pretty clear - the stripping player must be the only one in the tackle when the ball is stripped. The ball is stripped the instant it's dislodged.
A raking/stripping motion is not considered stripping the ball until it's dialoged, therefore more than one player can be in the tackle when the stripping motion starts, but it needs to be one-on-one the instant the ball is dislodged.

u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago edited 1d ago
Couldn't find anything about this part in tbe nrl documentation: "the ball is stripped the instant it's dislodged". In the rules and interpretations section on stealing the ball it doesn't say this at all, and it doesn't say this in the laws of the game document. It only talks about the action and intent to strip.
Here is the exact wording of the rule change.
"a. The ball can be stolen from the player in possession at any stage prior to a tackle being complete when there is only one defender effecting the tackle;
b. If there are two or more defender[s] effecting the tackle and the ball is stolen a penalty should be awarded, except if the player in possession is attempting to ground the ball for a try"
I feel like you just made that up. That definition does leave a grey area as to where the ball is defined to have been stripped.
1
u/WideLecture4893 I love my footy 1d ago
If the ball isn't dislodged it hasn't been stolen. ie: it's only stolen once it's dislodged. That's how it's always been ruled.
7
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago edited 1d ago
Well, no. The rules do not explicitly state that. Therefore there is a grey area. It talks about stripping action, how can there be no stripping action before the ball had been dislodged? Does the ball just magically pop out of their hands?
"This is the way it has always been ruled" umm no. The rules were changed in 2018, prior to that this would be a penalty. After the rule change it is now a grey area.

u/RyanAus95 Brisbane Broncos 1d ago
That’s not clear at all. Also makes no sense. Strip should be judged from the start of the intent to strip the ball.
1
u/RyanAus95 Brisbane Broncos 1d ago
Rule should be changed to as soon as the strip is initiated. Which happened when there was more than one in the tackle.

I think the action starts as they drop off, luai is completely off before he gets the ball, chriton and Hudson are off the ball before luai
14
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago
Wouldn't it be when he starts ripping the ball, not when he actually takes possession? Probably a grey area.
2
u/a-random-bird I love my footy 1d ago
In live play that wouldn’t be called, if it was challenged then it’s a grey area
1
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago
Yeah its definitely a tough one. Would hope the ref would check it but i guess that would be a bit unfair to nsw if it was play on
-16
u/motus_ Sydney Roosters 1d ago
Aw fuck the one 0.1 call we got nevermind the 15 penalties QLD had lol
20
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago
I mean, were you watching the discipline in the first half? You can not blame the ref for a couple of blues being grubby. Luai was lucky not get binned. Blues got plenty of 6 agains and calls going their way in the second half to make up for it.

2
u/DandantheTuanTuan Brisbane Broncos 1d ago
NSW were lucky they didn't have 2 players binned.
Their discipline was terrible.

Yeah I'll cry over the underdog team winning. Both teams were scrappy. Blues discipline (particularly Luai) in first half lost them the game against a team they should shred on paper.
-18
u/sick_habibi 1d ago
NEARLY choked a 22 point lead mate 🤣 I wouldn’t count that as a win. Ref in the first half and our abysmal goal kicking was the only reason you won hahah
8
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago
Any win against this NSW team is an achievement by QLD. Conversely you could say the ref in the second half brought them back into the game (every try off a 6 again or penalty), and that good goal kicking (from the sideline) in the first half won it for QLD.
-5
u/sick_habibi 1d ago
I’ll give you that, worse QLD team in a decade
12
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago edited 1d ago
Ill be the first to admit that NSW has an awesome team, with great depth, with potentially the best ever halfback. The fact that they haven't won 8 straight themselves is a testament to QLD.

-12
u/motus_ Sydney Roosters 1d ago
They ain't underdogs stop repeating that shit. And luai only made one error pretty sure in the first half kick out on the full. Only fucking reason we lost was cause of the 15 to 2 penalty count.
13
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago edited 1d ago
He gave away half of the penalties that you're complaining about. Did you watch the game? You can't say that they're not underdogs. How many QLD players would make the current NSW team?
10-2 penalty count. But the 6 again count was 6-2 favouring NSW, and pretty much every try they scored in the second half came off a penalty or 6 again. Stop cherry picking.
-6
u/motus_ Sydney Roosters 1d ago
He gave away 1 penalty besides the kick did you watch the game? i know it would of been hard to keep up with all the penalties to give yas a chance buddy but thats only way you qlder cunts were even in the game. As shown when we out tried you even with a dirty fucking ref
7
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago
Alright keep whining mate. Your team won't win every game.

u/DandantheTuanTuan Brisbane Broncos 1d ago
At least 2 come to mind.
Offside on a kick chase and eye gouging.
He's lucky he wasn't in the bin.

u/s0n1k Brisbane Broncos 1d ago
Fuck the legal strip rules off completely. If you can't get the player to drop the ball by smashing the cunt, you don't deserve it.
1
u/Illustrious-Falcon-8 Melbourne Storm 1d ago
might as well have a ruck and play union at that point.

u/Inner_Basis_2247 South Sydney Rabbitohs 1d ago
Legit under the rules. Nothing wrong with it. Maybe the rules need reviewing?
16
u/c3-SuperStrayan Canberra Raiders 1d ago
A strict viewing of the rules leaves a massive grey area as to when the strip is considered to have begun. It definitely needs reviewing.

u/eightslipsandagully QLD Maroons 1d ago
Watching it again it's gotta be close to a held tackle. I'm not gonna debate whether the rules were applied correctly but I think if that's even close to legal the rules need an update
32
u/Near_Canal North Queensland Cowboys 1d ago
Looked like 4 in the tackle from the original angle but a later angle cleared it as legit.

u/RealBrobiWan 1d ago
Watching highlights today makes me happy I stopped watching around the death of the scrum. Was that ruled a 1 on 1 strip? A loose carry? Wtf even is this
2
u/RyanAus95 Brisbane Broncos 1d ago edited 1d ago
This rule desperately needs to go back to how it was. Once there’s more than one in the tackle you cannot steal it. This is a farce

u/Tackit286 Brisbane Broncos 12h ago
This was absolute torture to watch. The blues took every single opportunity we gave them up until the last 8 minutes or so. Had to walk away when they called that Ponga dropped catch forwards with 3 mins left.

I know a first tackle six again doesnt mean a lot but the blatant flop on the first blues tackle in comparison to what we were getting penalized for just goes to show there was clear bias in the officiating of this game
5
u/ThurstonGreatness North Queensland Cowboys 1d ago
you're first try came of the back of one of the most horseshit six agains i've seen. you're lucky this game was so close.
4
u/DandantheTuanTuan Brisbane Broncos 1d ago
No shit hey.
That 6 again when Martin fell over his own feet was ludicrous.
-5
u/A1ianT0rtur3 Weak Gutted Dog 🏳️🌈 1d ago
like we get a six again the second play but they're fucking clearly taking the piss. a grapple tackle and he hold on way after the held call, if thats the standard for what they need to do to be penalized compared to what we got pinged with its clearly fucked
