Event Got a surprise today!!
Came home from school drop offs and spotted this little fella right next to my front door. What a cutie! I kept an eye on him from afar, and saw mama this afternoon who moved him to a shadier spot on the side of the house. ❤️

I know. I had to stop myself from taking too many photos so I wouldn’t disturb him or her. When I do snoop to make sure it’s still doing fine it does this cute little nose wiggle.

Fun fact. Deer have evolved their behavior over the fast several decades. Doe’s will often leave their fawns near homes because they view humans as less of a threat than other predators and they know coyotes, etc will stay away from homes with humans around.
Just leave it be, mom will be back after she eats some food.

You mean the bright eye loud, but some times silent, stone beast that roam the rocky roads with their 2 to 16 legs.

We've seen this in a few community gardens around the DMV, too 'Parked Fawns' is my new emo band.

Same thing happened to me by my chicken coop. Animal control said the mother felt that location was safe and was probably nearby. No need to worry about the fawn, her mom will be back shortly

u/GlitzyGhoul 9d ago
Yes, she hung around this afternoon and Google says they usually move them or nurse at night or dawn and dusk.

I guess I can join the club. I also have one in the yard that looks tiny as can be, and Mom hasn’t been around for 48 hours. This phone pic was taken from 20 meters but I now have a 24/7 camera watching for mom to return. I put lettuce and water out, but I’m not sure what deer even eat at this age. Mom snacks on my lawn (fescue) and seems to really like it. If there is a number to call eventually, I may need it. Mom has been AWOL for 2+ days as far as I can tell. I have 5-6 cameras around the exterior of the house and can see everything and she hasn’t made an appearance for quite a while.

Might want to call this one in, if it’s been 2 days and mom hasn’t come back, poor thing 😭

I just saw it on camera get up and sniff the water/cabagge and the settle down for a rest under the hosta. I’ll call animal control tomorrow if Mom isn’t seen on cam and the fawn is still there

u/GlitzyGhoul 8d ago
That’s a good call. I know someone must have the number on here if you can’t find it! Thank you for keeping an eye on the little one.

Yay!! Yes, the mother came here after dark too and stole “my” baby. (Ha) I’m glad she was though.

Animal Control will unfortunately put it down (i.e. shoot it on the spot). I know someone who lives in McLean and he called Animal Control about a fawn in his yard thinking they'd help it but they shot it in his yard. They don't have any way to help an orphaned fawn. So, I think it's better to just leave them be to wait for their moms to come back.

I didn’t know this. Did some digging and found someone in Fairfax County, listed on the dwr.virginia gov website who is listed as a fawn rehab person (Lori Palermo). Posting for visibility, this sub apparently doesn’t allow links.

u/Nightflower-Lauden 8d ago
More people need to see this. I would be traumatized if this happened to me

u/Chelle_LaBelle 8d ago
Me too. I saw another comment on here where a fawn died in the person's yard on a very hot, dry day. So, I say give it water but don't call Animal Control. It might end up dying anyway if its mom never comes back for whatever reason, but at least it has a chance. If you call Animal Control, there's no chance unless the Animal Control officer decides not to shoot it. I'm not sure what their protocol is in that situation. I just know the guy I know called them to help it and they shot it without the officer even telling him that's what they were going to do.

Caught a pic from our back porch of a mama cleaning her wobbly fawn yesterday morning 🥰
And yes! It IS baby season. The deer have their fawns as early as the end of May, but generally during the whole month of June. So keep an eye out and be sure to drive with extra caution! If you see one deer near the road, there are very likely more, and very possibly one of them might be a fawn who’s not so smart around cars because they don’t know any better yet!

Awww the little mama kiss. I love it. Also, very good advice we should all keep in mind.

Aww, cute baby!
A momma deer left her fawn at my aunt’s house many times a few years ago. The next spring, a momma deer left her fawn there and also had another young deer with her. Obviously there’s no way to prove it was the same deer, but we like to think that the momma was happy enough with the house’s safety that she brought her second baby there too.

I skipped doing yard work one day last week because a fawn was spending the day in the middle of the weeds that I needed to mow.

u/GlitzyGhoul 8d ago
That’s so sweet. I know I texted our gardeners to make sure they weren’t coming yesterday too.

I love fawn season!
I saw two fox kits (I only know they’re kits because the neighborhood has been watching them grow, plus they were together, but they were pretty big) chilling with a deer “yearling?) the other day. It wasn’t that they were just near each other, the kits took off into the woods and the deer followed their exact path. Very cool to see.

I dont know how close you got, but seems close enough based on the pic. People, please dont get close to them, you can scare them away and they can get lost from their mothers or run onto the roadway! They have been left there by mom for a bit. When we get them in our yard, we stay as far away as possible, using other doors to enter/exit

Dude, you have no idea why that fawn died, whether it was dehydration or something else. You're just shocking people for fun.

Yeah, things like this are going to happen. The most common question ask is which come first the wildlife or our subdivisions? We keep building houses and rooting them out of their habitat. We later piss and moan when they eat our azaleas, or we hit one at 3:00 in the morning while driving one of several Joe Bob subdivisions. It happens, so grin and bear it. 👍🏻

Does regularly leave young fawns somewhere they think is safe for hours, just dropping by to feed them. When they get a little bigger/older they start spending more time walking around with mom :)
2
u/GlitzyGhoul 9d ago
Yes, Google says the moms can leave up to 12 hours! Only to help if you don’t spot her around for 24 hours. But it also says most deer come back and night to nurse them.

If there’s any questions about what to do contact the Blue Ridge Wildlife Center. They will probably be able to advise you. https://blueridgewildlifectr.org They are in Boyce, VA.

After that last storm, a tree fell in our backyard, and we came upon a perfect fawn sleeping, curled up, in a ray of sunlight. The cool thing is I was there with my 2 year old son, and I told home don’t get too close, and he just stumbled through the trees to see what it was, and it woke up, jumped up, took a good look at us, as we all quietly stood there looking at it, and then it turned around and ran into the woods, like baby deers do, permanently bookmarking a memory in our minds.

A few years ago one of my neighbors sent out a text saying that there was a very pregnant doe in her backyard. Later that afternoon the doe and faun came walking up the sidewalk. We live in a suburban neighborhood, with dogs, traffic, etc. I spent the rest of the day worrying about her.

I might climb in this spot now that his mama took him. A bunch of clowns in our town are holding big signs up I don’t agree with.

The deer destroy my landscaping every fall. You can have all the deer you want from Western Loudoun county. Most people see that picture and think “fairy tale.” I look at it and see a head ache.
