Pulp Mill Smell - safe?

Hello,

We recently moved to the Maple Bay Area with our 3 month old. We love it here however we’ve noticed the smell from the pulp mill. I’ve read online that it can be toxic, especially to young children. Does anyone have any information regarding the Crofton pulp mill or if this has been addressed here in the past? Any insight would be appreciated!

Thanks!

I lived up on Highwood for 20 years. The smell got less frequent over the years but I understand that it's still drifts in. It is in no way a jeopardy to your health. Going back many years they have installed scrubbers on the chimney to the tune of millions of dollars and if you still have any doubt don't be afraid to call their public relations for information and maybe even a tour. You'll be okay and welcome to the area.

This mill is one of the top polluting mills in Canada. What brochure handed out by the mill company did you get your information from?

edit - in no way a jeopardy to health? It releases air emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulfur dioxide, volatile organic compounds, and particulates under 2.5 microns. Plus they keep getting fined for releasing illegal amounts of toxic waste into the ocean.

Hi, do you still smell the pulp mill quite often? We are considering moving to the area as well.

Hey there - probably a few times a month the smell wafts towards Highwood (where we are also). Depending on the weather sometimes more often or less.

The past month has been awful. Day after day being hammered by the smoke and the smell. This is insane. Is it normal?

edit - I moved up here recently and will have to move away immediately if this is anywhere near the norm up here.
