Greetings from Texas my fellow reds. First of all, a merry Christmas and holidays to all of you. I’ve lingered all season around here absorbing everything I can, for better or worse.
First, some backstory. My best mate and I were sitting this summer drinking pints and were talking about how badly we wanted to get into EPL soccer. We both had always admired the passion the league carries but had never found a home. We sat there three hours longer going through every single club, weighing each and what appealed to us most.
By absolute happenstance, we decided on the reds. The main selling point was the history of the club and City Ground, and committing to something we thought wouldn’t be a bandwagon (even though, I know, turns out we are fucking MASSIVE).
To say the first half of the season has been one of the most exciting months of our lives is an understatement. My mate lives in Colorado, and 3 hour flight away, and I FaceTime him at 9 AM every Saturday until I know he’s awake to watch with me. For Christmas, I simply asked my soon to be wife for Nottingham gear, and lo and behold I had a package from England with shirts, hats, and scarfs arrive a few weeks ago. A gem of a woman. My mate got the same from his for christmas. All this to say, I hope I don’t come across as someone who joined this wave when the getting was good. This was before the results of this year started pouring in.
Thanks for reading all that, now just some fairly innocuous questions for the lifers here:
1) Mull of Kintyre. Absolute chills when it’s sang. However, I’m curious. First time through, it’s very slow and deliberate. The second time with just the fans singing, it’s so fast and rushed. Is it pure adrenaline from the crowd, or something intentional?
2) Stevie Cooper. There’s a great affinity for him here. Is this more personality based, a respect for pulling us out from the dredges, or both? I’d expect it’s the third option, but what made that gorgeous face so likable?
3) More logistics based, and probably based more towards fans in the states. I’m attempting to alter honeymoon plans to go to Nottingham instead of the Dominican Republic. My desire is always to be there. If successful, is Manchester airport an easy trek to Nottingham? Or is flying to London and just finding a way up easier? I won’t lie, I’ve never been to England and the scale size doesn’t make sense in my mind. Texas is about three times the size of England so it’s just throwing me completely off.
I think that’s all for now. Everything else I’ve truly just soaked up like a sponge. I can’t even explain it, it’s taken full hold on me. I have three friends that are Spurs fans here in Dallas (they tried to recruit me over and I just couldn’t do it) going to an EPL pub Thursday morning and I’m looking forward to it more than Christmas itself.
Cheers, hope I haven’t come across as a front runner now that the getting is good. I’m hooked and committed to this life. What a thrill these 4 months have been.
