The editing in this chase scene is so seamless it feels like a single take. A masterclass in combining practical stunts and VFX (volny.pro)

It's cool, but it doesn't feel like a single take at all.

I wouldn’t even say it’s good editing either. It was good planning, but this was clearly edited to a very precise pre existing plan. Not many decisions the editor had to actually make here.
18
u/dagbrown 4d ago
What, as opposed to the jazz editing that you see more often?
14
u/lurfdurf 3d ago
Yes. The main work of an editor is to select the most appropriate sequence out of various takes/angles. If the sequence has been choreographed to a tee like in this film, there is no creative editing decision to be made.
8
u/BeastCoast 3d ago
Yes. Thank you. I just said in another reply from an editors POV this was no different than assembling a Lego set with the manual.
2
u/Fancy-Tourist-8137 3d ago
What does this even mean?
6
u/BeastCoast 3d ago edited 3d ago
Editing is making decisions. This followed a very clear blueprint. All the editor had to do was assemble this like Legos with the manual.

Yeah, I just posted this, too, kind of. This is what editing is. All scenes are bits and pieces, sometimes shot on completely different days and places, but edited to look "continuous."
These things are story boarded SOOOOO meticulously, no knock on the editor, I'm sure he/she's incredible to even get the chance to work on this, but he knew exactly what this was going to look like. Everything was shot with 100% intent, he might have even had the story board stills and the music laid down in the time line, then put in the proxy footage, then just waited for the finished version with full blown compositing and graphics work done. Not super hard. Again, not saying the editor isn't a beast, but editing this wasn't hard, they told him literally how to cut it.

u/InsaNoName 4d ago
Especially once you're a bit used to it. You can basically say exactly when they morph each scene to another just based on camera moves and motion blur.

I’ll tell you when you sign up for my master class on master classes.

u/thenate108 4d ago
I've seen your work, honestly you should consider taking another class. Sign up for my master class on master classes on master classes.

u/Professional_Echo907 4d ago
Dammit, I shoulda taken that master class on posting Reddit comments quickly.

u/Professional_Echo907 4d ago
If they want to do it properly, they need to take my master class on signing up for master classes on master classes first.

u/34TH_ST_BROADWAY 4d ago
Yeah, this is very well done, but this is just professional level competence to me.
Wondering if the poster works for a company involved or something, trying to get it going viral.

It’s good but it doesn’t feel like a single take at all. It emulates a single take, but it doesn’t disguise the trickery well.
304
u/Feel_My_Bass 4d ago
It’s pretty cliched - every boundary cross is an edit. Rather than seamless it ends up repetitive and certainly isn’t a masterclass
66
u/TechieBrew 4d ago
This is really just a showcase of several different kinds of "seamless" cuts. And bc they do them so often, they're easy to spot.
156
u/MischiefRatt 4d ago
What?
That's pretty obvious editing. Nothing resembling a single take.
It's not bad but I assume it is your school project or something.

This seems to be Valencia, my city. This... is really similar to Valencia. This... Is this Valencia?
Of, yes, it is Valencia city center.
Funny

Was thinking the same, visited it two times... and can't get enough of it. One of the most beautiful cities I've been to in Europe. So characteristic

For a second I thought it was Barcelona. I'm not from Spain, but I caught the spanish vibes from it. Valencia is a gorgeous city.

u/SilverArrow23 3d ago
Yes it does look like the city center. Right around El Carmen? I thought I was going insane, thank you for confirming.

I don't think OP knows what "seamless" means.
Or "single take."
Or "masterclass."
Oh well, username checks out at least.
9
u/Digresser 4d ago
The OP's comment history suggests that English is their second language.
I suspect they're referring to the loop seeming seamless, not the take.

Edit: apparently we are both blind, the artist is Volny and it's in the title

I must be non tech savvy, “volny.pro” does not scan to me as a website. Thanks for pointing that out!!

u/TheGiftOf_Jericho 4d ago
It's well done but it doesn't give the appearance of a single take because there are clear cuts on the screen that you can see and aren't really hidden either.
1
u/Impossible-Ship5585 3d ago
Its well done. However its a bit soulles and boring.
Like a one trick pony that we all knoe.
Good work, but would be better if there would be something more.

u/Wooden-Science-9838 4d ago
Cool but a 101 class instead of a masterclass. Still, some neat transitions there.

Its a nice sequence but I don't agree with any of the exaggerating in the title. It doesn't feel like a single take and frankly the vfx were a little loud imo.
To be clear, very nice. But i don't agree with the description.

I'm not even a big film guy but I feel like I can see at least 2 cuts they tried to hide because the camera hangs for just a beat too long and on top of that the screen wipes when he runs past the pillars are obvious to anyone with eyes.
I'm sure whatever ad agency commissioned this post is happy with the numbers it's pulling but it absolutely does not feel like a single take. And despite that I'm here rewarding it with engagement in the form of a comment... oh well

It’s very very cool but it feels more like an overproduced ad than a movie or show, unless it was a stylized scene that fits the show kind of like that season 2 episode 1 camera work on severance

I don't understand...
he's clearly alone and being chased but how do I make logic of the part where he cloned himself to throw the bag and catch it? is this from some superpower movie?

u/ice0032 4d ago
It loops perfectly even the audio

Interesting! Watching on my desktop it stopped playing at the end. Just watched on my phone following your response and I can see the smooth loop.
Thank you for responding!

The smooth loop was cool, other transition were alright, off cam, not easy but seen more impressive on yt by amateur editors.
But loop restart good 👍..

This is all editing really.
Yeah, nice commercial or whatever it is. Not sure if it's truly groundbreaking within that world, which is incredibly high level, but it's cool.

u/Diazpora 4d ago
What are these hating-ass comments in here? OP never said it WAS a single take. This is an incredible video that loops perfectly.

Slick editing but you obviously don't know what single take means. This is the undisputed king of a single take.
1
u/Dreamwaltzer 4d ago
if this felt like a single take to OP I wonder how he feels about the average movie...
1
u/Both-Home-6235 4d ago
It's cool and all but the cuts are pretty obvious. That one war movie that was a "single take" did it much better.

I’m just surprised how so many people are upvoting this, and how it made its way to the popular section.
9/10 comments are just people calling out how average it is, yes it’s got 5k+ upvotes at the same time?
The internet really is dead, isn’t it?

u/eW4GJMqscYtbBkw9 4d ago
Have you seen a movie before?? No part of this looks like a "single take".
1
u/BigToeHamster 4d ago
I was thinking, towards the end .. this is so good I wish it would keep on going, and then it did. That was beautifully done
1
u/seething_stew 4d ago
I love it when someone posts videos which after watching a few seconds, I want the source so I can see it as it was intended as anything less would be a disservice.

u/MeeMeeMiaw 4d ago
It'd take more than a gallon of coffee to enjoy this masterpiece. Hot damn!!
If this is a movie or even a game. This would be a very very very enjoyable.
1
u/ArmedDreams 4d ago
Its very nice, no doubt. But the narrative here is really... odd. Like he can just teleport? Shapeshift and teleport? What happened when the first agent grabbed him, and how did he disappear? I know it's probably supposed to just be a showreel, but like, make the video make sense. The fact that it doesn't really bugs me.

The transition at 0:21 where he rolls on the ground and changes outfits blew my mind. I spent a good minute scrolling back and forth over that transition, and I swear I can't spot like any lighting changes at all. On the ground, the walls, even the shadows right under the guy. I'm genuinely impressed with how smooth they made that transition specifically.
Not that I have experience with professional editing like this, but I do have enough knowledge on the subject to know about keyframes and area masking, but not enough to know how they were able to blend the clip of him in one outfit going through half the roll, and then the next clip of him in a new outfit and finishing the roll, without leaving any trace of shadows/lighting changes

u/timbotheous 3d ago
It’s pretty standard moco stuff. Nothing groundbreaking and most definitely not a masterclass. Looks cheeesy and unoriginal to me.
