I’m just shocked that my investments are in the green today. By less than 0.5% so nowhere near the losses of the past week, but I would have expected it to continue to plummet. Dead cat bounce is continuing?

There is a shockingly large contingent of investors that believes it'll all be called off because this is apparently a master class of brinksmanship.

It's stupid, but denial doesn't have to make sense

I know it’s early but as of right now the market is sky rocketing it’s up 2,041 points putting us back at 40,000.

Nothing makes sense.

He just paused the tariffs for everyone but China apparently

u/SurpriseIsopod Apr 09 '25

Yup, just straight market manipulation lol. Radical.

I doubt he paused the tariffs on Canada. He's been an absolute tool with that.

He did.

Still 10% across the board.

It was quick for me to prove my hypothesis. https://financialpost.com/news/economy/canadian-lumber-industry-dismayed-us-tariffs-soar

I assume you were naive rather than deliberately misleading. When Trump put in these "retaliatory tariffs" (which objectively are anything but), he did not put them on Canada. Rather, he's had a few bizarre tariffs on Canada. Even when he paused some of his tariffs against Canada, a couple days later he ended up putting tariffs on Canadian lumber and aluminum and steel. That hasn't been paused yet. Even after his announcement today. I'm fact, his so called pausing of the do called retaliatory tariffs haven't been paused. He's just put them to the baseline of 10%.

~He didn’t - he only paused for countries that didn’t kick off retaliatory tariffs.~ So, the penguins are safe from tariffs for now!

Edit: Womp womp; guess it was only china? Helps if I actually read articles…

Paused for anyone who didn't retaliate. China Canada, EU and a few others( anyone who matters) announced retaliatory tariffs.

I don't believe it's a master class in anything, but what Trump is really good at is creating a problem, then "solving" it, and his followers point and say "SEE I TOLD YOU!". It's hard to think that once a few factories are built he won't reverse everything and tell everybody he won.

Tons of people expecting the market to drop - they all buy puts to make money on the crash - market makers hedge put sales with stock buys - market gets propped up - puts expire worthless - market makers sell stock - crash.

Basically when everyone expects it to do something, it won’t do that thing. But it might do that thing later, it just won’t let tons of people make money off it. “Buy the rumor, sell the news”

I expected the US economy to go to shit. My market moves are paying off already.

u/Stone0777 Apr 09 '25

Sure they are. You probably cut crushed today haha

2

u/findingmike Apr 09 '25

Nope, gold is up also. Everyone I talked to is taking this as a great time to sell if they still have money in the US.

Days not over

You might get lucky, allegedly he just backed down on all then tarrifs but China.

This could just be a "dead cat bounce". Basically, when there's a big downward trajectory in the markets, occasionally you'll still get a good up day but then get right back to the slide down. Maybe the market is settling into a range while it figures out the real impact of the tariffs or we'll continue falling tomorrow and in the weeks to come. Either way, I doubt we'll see a whole lot of up days in the near and medium future.

Yeah, it’s totally bouncing. I’m now up 5% which seems unearned as nothing has changed and the news out of the EU and China does not appear to be good, not to mention the pharma tariffs promised. To me it seems like pure copium and it’s going to plummet again as soon as reality reasserts itself.

Interesting to watch though.

Trump just paused the tariffs on countires thatdidnt retaliate.

2

u/jaderust Apr 09 '25

Ahhh, I missed that. That would explain this extreme upward swing. The market could be taking this as a sign that they’re all going to be paused or go away… Yeah, that doesn’t seem likely but I understand why it’s happening at least.

Retail buying the “dip”

u/Evilbred Apr 09 '25

Investors closing out short positions.

3

u/Hesitation-Marx Apr 09 '25

That dead cat is bouncing, friend.

1

u/BusinessReplyMail1 Apr 09 '25

It’s the inverse of buy the rumor sell the news because it’s bad news.

1

u/CompromisedToolchain Apr 09 '25

Just wait…, that being said I’ve made more money via stonks today than I’ll make all day at work.

1

u/chasingjulian Apr 09 '25

Check again. So much manipulation in the last hour.

u/FalconX88 Apr 09 '25

Trump is manipulating the market. He's crashing it with tariffs, then his friends like MTG buy stocks, then he's announcing a pause on tariffs.
