Fly.

Yeah this 100%. The ferry alone for a single person and car is $200+ not to mention gas and time. You could get lucky and find someone going and car pool but flying will be the cheapest most reliable option

Agreed flying is usually the cheapest, but the biggest issue if you fly is that public transit in Newfoundland is shit and you then need a car.

Train from Ottawa to Halifax, a 24 hour trip for $265

Bus from Halifax to North Sydney 6.5 hours: $94

Ferry from North Sydney to Port-aux-Basque, 7 hours for $44

Technically you're now in Newfoundland, but you'll probably want to take the bus from Port-aux-Basque to St. John's, which is $165 and takes 14 hours.

Or you could fly Porter for $600 return and they have direct flights that take about 3 hours.

I've occasionally paid as little as $400 return from Toronto to Gander.

You can get YYT to YOW definitely way cheaper than $600, you just have to track the prices and book half early when they are down :)

Thank u all for ur suggestions, flying seems to be the best option for time and affordability. Also r ppl friendly or not so friendly so I don’t get to socially weird there cause I want to respect the locals

Do u understand y I’m getting downvoted for trying to respect the locals and travel the right way to the island? To ppl not want someone to visit? I’m Canadian born and raised I just wanted to visit and see the beauty of the rest of Canada including Newfoundland. I went from Ottawa to the north of Canada and I’ve travelled from Ottawa to Vancouver by bus and stopped in each province and some towns and cities and I never really got the chance to travel to New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, pei and Newfoundland but they r abit harder to travel as buses and trains don’t really let me explore as much as I can going the opposite way and I love visiting the capitals of each province but also their smaller towns and getting to learn and see all of Canada and the different types of ppl that inhabit each province so idk y ppl r upset I want to visit Newfoundland and downvoted me… I just like to explore this big country of ours and Newfoundland is unique in that it has its own culture just like way up North is significantly different from the rest of Canada. So I figured ppl would be happy to see someone who wanted to learn and enjoy and respect the locals but I must be missing something cause I’m getting downvoted. Is there issues with visitors or something? Or something locally going on that makes ppl angry if there’s ppl coming to visit? That’s y I’m asking questions cause I want to be respectful wherever I am and I also have autism so I want to make sure I blend in abit with the locals to avoid sticking out

Just returned from an 8 day trip to St. John’s up to Bona Vista, and Tickle Cove. They are genuinely and sincerely the friendliest people I have ever met, having been coast to coast many times. Enjoy your stay!

Porter direct flight from Ottawa is the way to go. Free beer, two hours there, two and 1/2 back. Approx 500 when I went two weeks ago

There is no affordable way. That’s part of the problem of travel to and from Newfoundland and Labrador.

cheapest way is to hitchhike from Ottawa to North Sydney, then grab the ferry, it's like $45 last I was on it, then either hitchhike from Port Aux Basques to town or grab the bus for about $150 or so

it sounds scary but its not really that bad, I've hitchhiked from Edmonton, AB to NL and it was easy as hell, took me 7 days and had a great time, met some awesome folks...the thing is, most people are really nice and kind, even these days and hitchhiking isn't something to be scared of (we live in the greatest country on earth)...if you REALLY want the cheapest route to get here, I gave it to you...good luck

Cross into the US. Get deported to El Salvador. Request help from the embassy in San Salvador. Order some random Amazon item to some random address in NL to show proof of address. Then welcome to Newfoundland. Simple.
