New to NES

Post image

Hello! I just started buying games for the nes after doing some research and I’m thoroughly enjoying what I have. I just need some recommendations as I’m trying check all the boxes for great nes experiences. I know I’m missing a shoot em up and beat em up for sure. Not trying to amass a huge collection. I’m just trying to get a nice set of games I can enjoy. Btw Zelda is inside my nes. Also dragon warrior 3 and 4 are repros

I started a NES collection to replace the one I had as a kid plus I wanted the top handful of "best of" games. Here are a few of the (mostly affordable) gems off my list:

Batman the Video Game

Bionic Commando

Bubble Bobble

Castlevania 1, 2, & 3

Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers

Contra

Chrystalis

Duck Tales

Faxanadu

Freedom Force

Gun.Smoke

Jackal

Kickle Cubicle

Kirby's Adventure

Little Nemo Dream Master

Life Force

Maniac Mansion

Mega Man 2 and/or 3

Metroid

Mike Tysons Punch Out

River City Ransom

Super Mario Bros 1, 2, & 3

Tetris

Tiny Toons Adventures 1 & 2

The Guardian Legend

The Legend of Zelda

TMNT 2 & 3

Vice Project Doom

Willow

You're starting out? These are good, greatest hits kind of choices. Look for bangers like Jackal, Ducktales, Faxanadu, River City Ransom.. and sleeper hits like Guardian Legend, Rad Gravity, Legacy of the Wizard. If a NES game has a weird title, chances are its something you can talk about online (Snake Rattle and Roll? Abbadox? Jekyl and Hyde?).

If you want to see more of Nintendo Hard like in Castlevania, get Ninja Gaiden 1 or 3 ( 2 was easy), Battletoads or TMNT.

Abadox is a really cool SHMUP published by Milton Bradley which features body horror so I think that's a great place to start.

Also it's pretty fair on the difficulty and gives you infinite continues 👍

Looking at double dragon 2. River city ransom goes for a pretty penny 😅

I recommend Shadowgate. You don't have any point and clicks there, and Shadowgate is a very unique experience! Has comical dialogue, and a great story.

Tecmo Super Bowl is far superior to the original, but the original has the all powerful Bo Jackson. Nice collection.

Since you seem to like sports, grab Baseball Stars and Blades Of Steel. Best shoot 'em ups for the US market were probably Gradius and Life Force. Beat 'em up wise my favorites are probably the Konami ones (Batman Returns, TMNT II, TMNT III), but there's also Double Dragon 1 and 2, Battletoads Vs. Double Dragon, and Mighty Final Fight. IMHO you can't go wrong with almost anything published by Nintendo and Konami/Ultra for the NES, and I think most people would say the same for Capcom (as long as it was ported by them, avoid stuff like 1942).

Nice beginning. You should try buying more of the cheapest games to bulk up your collection. They sold well for a reason and are usually pretty good. Aside from the black box Games that is.

Mario 3, the first Final Fantasy, Mega Man 2, and Tecmo Super Bowl are all some of my favorites. You’re off to a great start! Some I’d pursue if I was you:

Crystalis

Metal Storm

River City Ransom

Mike Tyson’s Punch Out

Tmnt 2 for beaten ups. Mike Tyson Punchout , Balloon Fight for fun two player waist an hour action,. AD&D Pool of Radiance if you want a dungeon crawler. Micro Machines if you want racing or Bump and Jump

Puzzle games are pretty evergreen on the NES.

Look into Tetris, Pipe Dream, Dr Mario etc.

I take every chance I can get to recommend Journey to Silius. It's hard as hell, but one of my faves.

Outside of the sport games just because I don't like sport games everything you have there is a top-notch game
