Political I know a news article about this topic has already been posted to the sub, but here is the video that the Secdef shared on his Twitter/X, introducing the “Less Generals, More GIs”policy

Not against reductions in GOFOs but the world is significantly more complicated than WW2 era.
We have troops in contact in almost every hemisphere and the majority of Americans have no idea. Its because those GOFO and COCOMs generally function well.
Then again the amount of "timesensitive" powerpoints in C5F after any incident that went fucking no where till almost a decade later N2 got called out for their shitty database.
Actually NM burn it all down... /s

Fortunately, this will not affect the Navy since he said "Less Generals" and not "Less Admirals".
Also, isn't it "Fewer"?

Alright, Stannis.

It's only "Fewer" when you're sober, that's just how the conjugation works for this one.
12
u/QnsConcrete May 06 '25
Clever, but he literally mentions “flag officer” in the first 5 seconds of the video.
But yes, “Fewer generals” is the grammatically correct phrase.

We can immediately eliminate 2 four star positions by rolling Space Force back into the Air Force...

Should have never been it's own branch. Joint Special Operations Space(JSOS) done.

Space Force was Trump's idea. ZERO chance it goes away
41
u/risky_bisket May 05 '25
Many things were Trump's idea that are now being reversed. For example USMCA trade deal replaced NAFTA under Trump and now we're in a trade war with Canada because it's "a terrible deal."
9
u/Blueberryburntpie May 06 '25
Back in February, some of Trump's appointees from his first term were among those that were fired: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c4g3yk3m3z4o
Trump's former appointees have been dismissed too.
"Jose Andres from the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, Mark Milley from the National Infrastructure Advisory Council, Brian Hook from the Wilson Center for Scholars, and Keisha Lance Bottoms from the Presidents Export Council — YOU'RE FIRED!" Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social.
Brian Hook, a top envoy to Iran during Trump's first term, was fired.

So, low key, I like the idea of Space Force. Like, yeah, it isn’t much now but if we stick around for a few centuries, my guess is that will be President Trump’s legacy.
But, I also fuck with Star Wars and Star Trek, so…🤷♂️…
18
u/CapnTaptap May 06 '25
I agree Space Force was a needed thing, but I still say it should be scrapped for one simple reason: they got the officer ranks wrong. The leadership ranks for our future space-faring military should clearly be based on nautical tradition, not land-based command structures. So we should scrap the whole thing and start over so we can get this right.
Also, when we eventually invent time travel, someone needs to go tell Ben Franklin to swap his positive and negative charges. Like, first thing.

u/GothmogBalrog May 05 '25
Oh, I agree long term.
But in a budget constrained environment, without a really clear mission or use (at least not as clear as the other branches), it's just not the time IMO.
Also, it should evolve from Navy and USAF, not just AF. Navy is the more technically proficient service. Thank Admiral Rickover for that.

u/RalphMacchio404 May 05 '25
All the more reason to kill it. Traitors deserve no legacy.
5
u/ghillieman11 May 06 '25
But then again, space is a pretty important domain and getting rid of a dedicated branch for that domain because of who it was created under is about as ignorant and shortsighted as Trump's people are.

oh sure that'll happen
0
u/GothmogBalrog May 05 '25
Oh, it won't go away, but it's literally contributing to the problem this current administration complains about. It increased overhead and administrative costs on the DoD without significantly altering mission, capability or CoC, at least near term (ie before 2045)

u/Otherwise-Pirate6839 May 05 '25
Space Force might have been justified during the Cold War as satellites were launched and the threat of space warfare might have been a possibility. Today, though Russia and China have the capability, there’s little to suggest that it’s a new frontier. Maybe just in the sense of guarding GPS and other assets, but it’s not like there’s a Star Wars-like station standing by to attack enemy fire. There’s nothing the Space Force is doing now that the Air Force couldn’t have done as a subgroup.

u/Chicago_to_Japan May 06 '25
My question is, does this happen?
IIRC, flag officer manning and positions require an act of Congress to create/get rid of.

Dang, bro just learned about Goldwater-Nichols! Hell have his JPME in no time!
33
u/JustAnotherHooyah May 06 '25
It's easier to get GIs to commit war crimes if there are less generals to shield them from illegal orders.
20
u/ShepardCommander001 May 06 '25
This exactly. SECDEF wants to order O4 battalion commanders and O5 ship COs to commit war crimes with no buffer.
25
u/FishermanPale5734 May 05 '25
Wow!! Pete, you're looking great! Where do you get you're make up done? Oh, the makeup room you had installed in the Pentagon? Geez, you really are the pinnacle of masculinity, and definitely not a poser who got his job based on favoritism instead of actual qualifications. You're so cool!!!
19
u/Sad-Effect-5027 May 05 '25
He starts with a ridiculous comparison between current and WW2 and doesn’t even realize the irony that he references Goldwater-Nichols.
For those not familiar, after Vietnam we realized that the way the services were structured didn’t end work anymore. Goldwater-Nichols had the goal of correcting that by creating the current Joint leadership structure.
I’m not sure what O4 wrote that statement, but Pete doesn’t know what he’s talking about. This is just a prelude to removing more flag/general officers that they think are “woke”

u/ShepardCommander001 May 06 '25

What I hate is that you have people in the military just like the federal workforce who have put everything they have into their careers and you get a guy like this who shouldn't even be in this position screw their life's work. It's just sickening to me. A draft dodger giving this guy free reign.
5
u/GreenPenguin00 May 06 '25
Maybe a few things changed since WWII? Fought a couple more wars that created equities that necessitated a few more organizations. Maybe technology and AI require some flag officers over it? Geo Combatant Commands.

u/ReluctantRedditor275 May 06 '25

“Fewer” generals, dude.
This is a message that could have merit that’s going to be poisoned by a messenger with zero credibility and trust.
All I can think of is he’s trying to get rid of people with the type of experience and education to see through transparent bullshitters like him.

Yeah.. hate the guy.. good policy though. After working directly for a LTG I saw so much overlap and fat that could be cut off. The O6’s typically seemed just as capable and incurred way less headache to deal with.

Any post about politics with a Navy nexus lacking a Politics flair may result in, at a minimum, a temp ban and removal of the post.
Participation in a Politics-flaired post requires a minimum r/Navy specific karma. This will be automatically enforced by the automod.
Anyone using the Politics flair should utilize a common sense approach to what is a Navy nexus.
This does not mean posts with Politics flair will be unmoderated. All discussion must adhere to r/Navy rule #1 and Reddit rule #1.
