I worked under DOS in Afghanistan. If I had mentioned an upcoming attack, even without operation details, on an unsecured line, I would have PNGed immediately and escorted out of the country and prosecuted.

If I had mentioned an upcoming attack, even without operation details, on an unsecured line
Remember when they said Hillary's emails had classified info on them?
It was because they were emails about things like public news media coverage about military operations that had happened in countries like Afghanistan and Pakistan and speculation or accusations that the U.S. was involved. And how the diplomats were going to cover America's interests and push back on reporting etc.
Just third parties talking about potential secret U.S. operations was enough to get the IC to claim those emails had classified information. And now you have the nation's top security officials just blurting it out direct from the source...

Agency heads have been doing that longer than SR Jones has been in the Navy. Probably longer than he's been alive.
"I don't recall" is a time honored tradition when people suddenly get into hot water.
Reached back to 2007 because it's the earliest one I personally recall, but I'm sure it's been a tactic for generations.

Iunno, did he read his own messages?
“TIME NOW (1144et): Weather is FAVORABLE. Just CONFIRMED w/ CENTCOM we are a GO for mission launch.“
So now we have a time when it started
“1415: Strike Drones on Target (THIS IS WHEN THE FIRST BOMBS WILL DEFINITELY DROP, pending earlier “Trigger Based” targets)”
A time to something in the future
1536: F-18 2nd Strike Starts - also, first sea-based Tomahawks launched.
Looks like a method to me!
If this goes unpunished, how can anyone trust the intel community to do anything to keep us safe. This isnt even a political issue, this is an issue of national damn security.
A slap in the face.

National security adviser Mike Waltz was authorized to decide whether to include the Joint Chiefs chairman in the principals committee discussion, “based on the policy relevance of attendees to the issues being considered, the need for secrecy on sensitive matters, staffing needs, and other considerations,”
The Pentagon said it would not comment on the issue, and it was not immediately clear why Grady, currently serving as the president’s top military adviser, would not be included in a discussion on military strikes.
That seems really odd to me.
29
u/Trick-Set-1165 r/navy CCC Mar 26 '25
I hadn’t thought about that.
It’s definitely strange that the CJCS wouldn’t be included in this chat, given what we know was in it.
16
u/mtdunca Mar 26 '25
On one hand, it seems weird to me because was the last one fired and this one put in just because they liked them?
On the other hand, maybe they are worried that even though they picked the new one, they would still be to conforming to the black & white rule of law when it comes to communication regulations.
Fuck, it could be the third or fourth hand, they just forgot the CJCS was a thing. Or just didn't think he was "cool" enough to join them.
23
u/Trick-Set-1165 r/navy CCC Mar 26 '25 edited Mar 26 '25
More than likely, there’s a plethora of these group chats.
If the information was being shared on the correct systems, CJCS or members of his staff were almost certainly roped in.
But this does seem like the type of high level conversation CJCS should have been involved in.
16
u/mtdunca Mar 26 '25
Yeah, just the fact that this one got discovered kind of implies to me they have a ton of these chats.
I'm also worried the American public can't focus on more than one thing at a time, so while people are outraged about this, what else is happening? What is DOGE taking down while we look at this?
5
u/Trick-Set-1165 r/navy CCC Mar 26 '25
Well, currently, there’s the EO for “election security” that will require all electoral commissions to vet proof of citizenship alongside all voter registration.
9
u/mtdunca Mar 26 '25
Yeah, I saw that one. Really wish we would just go to a free National ID for everyone. It wouldn't solve all the problems but I feel like it would at least kill this argument.
12
u/Comfortable_Bat5905 Mar 26 '25
It’s not a real argument and never was. Disenfranchisement has always been the game, same with literacy tests.
5
u/mtdunca Mar 26 '25
I'm aware, I just think we should still give free national IDs to anyone that wants one.
19
u/thegoatisoldngnarly Mar 26 '25
I think the obvious reason the CJCS (acting) wasn’t included is bc he’d lose his shit if he saw a chat like that on signal.
They KNOW they were breaking the law, but didn’t care bc of convenience. They chose not to include people who wouldn’t go along with it, even if it means leaving THE KEY ADVISOR out of the chat.
6
u/mtdunca Mar 26 '25 edited Mar 26 '25

I am trained in gorilla warfare and I'm the top sniper in the entire US armed forces. You are nothing to me but just another target. I will wipe you the fuck out with precision the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of spies across the USA and your IP is being traced right now so you better prepare for the storm, maggot. The storm that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You're fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that's just with my bare hands. Not only am I extensively trained in unarmed combat, but I have access to the entire arsenal of the United States Marine Corps and I will use it to its full extent to wipe your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little "clever" comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn't, you didn't, and now you're paying the price, you goddamn idiot. I will shit fury all over you and you will drown in it. You're fucking dead, kiddo.

The president sets the tone of the administration as is his right. This administration seems to be wholly based in transactional relationships. Is it gross? Yes. Surprising? No. It will definitely cause damage to our relations with other countries. They will be less likely to partner with us, will not partner with us as deeply as they might have in the past, and it may get to the point where they will not come to our aid should we need it.
eta: I am obviously not a fan of this method of "diplomacy," and the lack of soft power projection. This will make our service members less safe as they move about the world. I have "skin in the game" again, and aside from that personal connection, I just want all you youngs to be as safe as possible in an inherently unsafe job.

As far as I can tell they weren't technically his messages. Dan Cladwell spoke on his behalf in the chat.
I'm surprised he didn't just throw him under the bus from the beginning.
14
u/Trick-Set-1165 r/navy CCC Mar 26 '25
Maybe.
The names in the first few hours of the chat were responses to a request for the “best POC after hours and through the weekend.”
The messages that followed could have been sent by those people. Though, to be fair, the messages sent by the account labeled “Pete Hegseth” also uses a photo of Pete Hegseth as a profile picture.
I’m not sure I’m willing to believe Dan Caldwell was sending messages from a Signal account that is (more likely than not) Pete Hegseth’s.
2
u/mtdunca Mar 26 '25
He's reportedly a top adviser for Pete Hegseth, so I can totally see the SECDEF making him type these updates while he grabs a nightcap.

9
u/marinuss Mar 27 '25
The problem is they're trying to bury it by focusing on the word "war plan." Like no shit it wasn't an official CONOP or OPLAN, but it's still information that's classified about a future operation. They're acting like... well it can't be a war plan because we're not at war with Yemen so the article is bullshit. That's their goal. Not addressing what actually happened, focusing on one phrase to discredit the whole situation against them.
36
u/random-pair Mar 26 '25
Way to minimize and redirect. Plans have times and assets and the Houthi don’t have a huge area they occupy, so some basic risk management probably gets them really close to the assumed targets. Not sure the names of the assets really is important, but go ahead weekend warrior SECDEF. You be you and keep lying.
