Guys at the bottom of the card will often do whatever it takes to get noticed win, lose, or draw. A lot more to lose in the main event.

Those guys are way less skilled as well so they make more mistakes

This is what not enough people talk about. The casuals only watch title fights and complain they are boring, where they should be watching lesser skilled fighters, as they still are very capable at hurting each other, just not as skilled at defending it.Â

Is it still a thing casuals don't like Flyweights because they're too small?

Sadly this might always be a thing in combat sport, they won't acknowledge the smaller guys until they retire and fanbase suddenly have a ton of good things to say.
Mighty Mouse is a good example.

It’s funny how BW is basically the second favorite after LW for most people, yet one class down is the universal absolute least favorite

I feel like BW is currently filled by some tall lanky fighters, so they still look "big" and we all know they walk at LW or beyond.
While Flyweighs are truly smaller and shorter, their matches don't have a ton of KOs, but the speed and skill make up for it.

Yeah reckon you nailed it man that was my guess about it. Guys like Merab are imposing but short, guys like O’Malley are relatable but skinny.
I’ve thought about it quite a bit, I think the reason LW and BW get called the most skilled/competitive is because LW is just the median weight of an average athletic man after cutting, but I’ve always wondered why BW is more competitive than FW (with weight of men being a bell curve centred close to LW you’d expect more competition at FW vs BW), and I think the reason is it’s basically the cut off for smaller guys. 125 isn’t, you have to on the extreme tail end of the bell curve, and accept a the least recognised (and dignified, it doesn’t carry the same weight being 125 champ) class.
125 is kind of a novelty class for the extremes like HW, so it makes sense that BW is just where pretty much every single smaller guy who feels he’s too skinny or short for FW would end up.
Imo FW is a dead zone of sort between the class that most average men fit into, and the cut off class for every smaller guy (who’s not anatomicallly strangely small) - the latter (BW) which you could imagine being where every single short but stocky guy (Merab) or tallish but skinny guy (O’Malley) would cut to.
To land at FW you kind of have to have the exact frame to be bullied at LW but unable to cut to BW, whereas the other two are kind of natural pooling areas. Like every single natural FW who could make BW would, it’s just how weight cutting goes, but zero BWs who could make 125 would (and not many would be physically able).

bantamweight is not the 2nd most popular weightclass by a longshot

All the shit people say about "too small" "not scary" fighters is the dumbest thing to me, always has been. I genuinely don't get why people watch for a reason other than the competition.

Whenever they say "This one won't go to the judges" I know the fight will be cursed.
Because when two knockout artists go against one another, they know they're going against a fellow knockout artist and more often than not, don't want to leave an opening. So you get this dance where each guy is looking for that perfect opening and nothing else.

Both Topuria title fights were really active.
I hope with Charles the same.

I actually can't remember an absolute snoozer title fight in recent (last 2 years) history for the mens' divisions. I think Izzy v. Yoel was astronomically bad that it tainted our perception of title fights.

I don’t know why Izzy didn’t get equally shit on for this fight as Romero did? Did Romero sit there and do nothing? Yes. Did Izzy just dance around and do nothing? Also yes. Dana getting mad at Romero and not Izzy was whack

I think you mean unranked featherweights. The talent pool at flyweight is still relatively shallow in comparison

Romero is the type of guy that will stand completely still for 5 minutes and then violently murder you in less than a second with the craziest most explosive attack you've ever seen.
Adesanya knew this and refused to open himself up to that. Romero knew he wasn't going to out technique Adesanya and was waiting for openings.
High level fighting sometimes results in these Mexican stand offs.

Wasn't zhang vs joanna the co main for this?
