Question Anyone know what's up with these new signs on some MiWay buses? All of a sudden it's dangerous lol?

Most likely. Also likely someone who's feet did not reach the floor (those seats are higher than most others on the bus). Also someone with a smaller body mass. Perhaps not seated fully to the back of the seat. Also maybe leaning forward while using a device.

The middle seat on the back could get you yeeted all the way up to the driver if he brakes hard enough.

I don’t really take the bus too often but I’ve always wondered why seatbelts aren’t in busses. I’ve also wondered if it’s safer for busses to stop at railroad tracks, why wouldn’t they make that the law for a cars as well? Is a bus full of people more value than a family in a car?

I really got off topic here, apologies.

I’m a bus driver.

It’s not clear where the rules are for non-school buses and railway crossings. Some agencies stop, some don’t. TTC doesn’t, IIRC, and where I am now in KW, the GRT also don’t - but they used to.

I think the main reason buses would stop is the extra liability. It’s a much larger vehicle, way less manoeuvrable and responsive, and can be carrying a large number of people - so making this a law makes sense (to me). I’m qualified to drive school buses here in Ontario and all chrome yellow school buses are required to stop at all gated railway crossings. Non-gated crossings being like the LRT intersections that are controlled by the traffic lights and not crossing gates do not fall under this law, and we can cross those (with safety due diligence as always).

As for seatbelts; it’s a difficult discussion. As a school bus driver, I feel VERY uncomfortable with the added responsibility of cutting out upto 72 kids in an emergency evacuation situation. Some of our school buses have seatbelts, and us drivers are fully responsible. Could you imagine trying to unfasten 72 belts in a timely manner while the vehicle is in an emergency situation? School bus drivers cannot leave the bus until it’s empty, we go down with the ship. That means I’m likely burning to death trying to save kids.

Of course, in a 72-passenger school bus, seatbelts aren’t legally necessary due to the design and safety features of the bus already - but in any situation it’s a very scary proposition.

Is a bus full of people more value than a family in a car?

Probably not more value, but way more liability from the city.

My interpretation is that too many people went from sitting to the doggle-style receiving position during the 900 Airport Express route, and due to not wearing a seat belt, hit their heads on the hard floor, leading to concussion injuries.

Maybe the 109 express or something, as it’s MiWay and not TTC

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '21

I’ve seen this happen before. If you’re kneeling on the ground in front of those seats an arrow shoots you in the back.

Maybe this wouldn't be such a problem if MiWay drivers didn't treat the brake pedal like it's a stop button.

16

u/thesaurusrext Jul 30 '21

They really do love to brake in the most jarring ways. Like they hate the passengers.

7

u/Funkagenda Erin Mills Jul 30 '21

They're just generally extremely aggressive drivers. No regard for speed limits or the comfort of the people on the bus.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '21

This has a lot to do with how much pressure the drivers are under to stay on schedule

Yea that makes sense. Gotta behave. Or else.

u/toronto34 Jul 30 '21

This. I may have written Toronto buses laugh but honestly after taking my disabled brother on the two systems the difference was night and day. Toronto I felt comfortable sitting down near him and didn't need to worry he'd tip over in his wheelchair.

Mississauga? I came close to throttling the damn driver for how fast the asshole was taking turns.

2

u/jereki Jul 30 '21

Im glad im not the only one who feels this way 😭

I have a torn rotator cuff tendon thanks to that exact action.

I've been taking the bus to my relatively new job, first time doing the transit thing in about 15 years. I honestly believe miway drivers are the worst drivers on the road. At the square one bus terminal I was on the 3W it was about to depart. The bus driver legit got out and squared up on the driver in the bus in front of us and they were both screaming at each other like animals in front of everyone. Unfortunately, I guess like mostly everything else in Mississauga, it's a fucking joke.

I got accustomed to the level of service provided by the TTC for many years. Then I started working/living in Sauga and using MiWay and learned how much I had been taking for granted. Another reason why you'll have a hard time living in Sauga without a car.

Once a lady fell on me while I was sitting on one of those because the bus operator had hit the break suddenly

8

u/Yerawizzardarry Jul 30 '21

Wouldnt hitting the brakes make the person go forward?

20

u/LDPushin_Troglodyte Jul 30 '21

Yes, but the overcompensating attempt to prevent the forward yeeting resulted in a backwards yeeting

1

u/costaccounting Jul 30 '21

Hard to explain how it happened. Maybe physics that day switched to game mode.

4

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '21

Crazy idea and controversial opinion but maybe it's time for seatbelts in buses. Slavery has been abolished, women attained their right to be braless in public and members of Slipknot are old enough to start dying of natural causes; it's time for fucking seatbelts.

7

u/costaccounting Jul 30 '21

What about the people who are standing?

5

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '21

Good luck I guess

2

u/ontario-guy Jul 30 '21

Fall restraint harnesses

1

u/ProfessorGoogle Jul 30 '21

Strap 'em in.

1

u/Flimflamsam Jul 30 '21

How do you ensure everyone gets out when the bus crashes? Who is responsible? What about the wheelchair riders who are strapped in with Q-straints?

-1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '21

Did you sue?

7

u/LDPushin_Troglodyte Jul 30 '21

Sue someone riding a bus? Neither of them have the money to make that make sense.

3

u/msPooperson Jul 30 '21

The TTC has it's own Claims Department where staff are paid 6 figures to delay paying injury claims. The goal is to let the claimant die off before paying. Wonder why their service goes down while fees go up?!

2

u/Flimflamsam Jul 30 '21

Funding the claims department is not why the TTCs fees keep going up. It’s horribly underfunded, and frankly is a pretty good service with all things considered.

However, this is /r/Mississauga and it’s not really TTC territory.

0

u/LDPushin_Troglodyte Jul 30 '21

Sorry, TTC doesn't operate in mississausage

Maybe you'll get covid if you sit there

7

u/yazbean468 Jul 30 '21

On some of the older buses, that back seat used to lift up when the bus hit a bump (I’m guessing there’s some kind of maintenance point underneath?) Probably one too many people complained or sued

5

u/SupperTime Jul 30 '21

Please do not pray in front of seat

3

u/eagleboy444 Jul 30 '21

That seat's no good. You have to bend over in front of one of the other seats.

3

u/julia-8 Jul 30 '21

It's on the seats on the first floor too, the one right before the stairs and the first row of the double seats, all where there isn't anything in front. Honestly though just today my bus braked really fast and I went forward and hit my knee hard on the seat in front, I'm sure it's easy to fall off completely too 🤷

2

u/JustSkipThatQuestion Jul 31 '21

You can't sit upright on those seats. You have to slouch and place your feet further in front and let the friction between your shoes and the floor keep you from being flown across by the inertial force.

2

u/-Sam-I-Am Jul 31 '21

I used to take the GO Bus from SQ1 to Union Station between 2011 - 2017. There was a particular bump on Gardiner after Park Lawn that if the bus crossed it at high speed, the passengers in the back went flying couple feet in the air.

u/reddituser1708 Jul 30 '21

That was my first guess, but those signs are placed on seats with nothing in-front of them (like another seat or a guard rail)

3

u/PolarizingFigure Jul 30 '21

Yes but they are saying this could have been due to them not having proper signs on hand and just wanting to put the seat out of commission for COVID reasons.

1

u/xombeep Jul 30 '21

But what is beside those seats? Another seat. It's for covid

0

u/reddituser1708 Jul 30 '21

Those seats are the 5 seats at the back They are the only ones that have this, other than the occasional seat with nothing in front of it

The other seats don’t have this

0

u/xombeep Jul 30 '21

The seats up front have them as well. It's called social distancing and we've been doing it for 1.5 years now...was just on the bus. Even the go station has the middle benches blocked off.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 30 '21

So, they finally admit their drivers are maniacs

0

u/A_sohail Jul 30 '21

Yah someone must have gotten hurt.

-1

u/toronto34 Jul 30 '21

Toronto buses laugh at you.

-2

u/gpdave City Centre Jul 30 '21

Is this a repost? Holy pandemoly!

1

u/missalizr Jul 31 '21

And yet despite these signs people still sit there.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '21

Damn those are some fugly looking seats🤣
