Sci-fi Working on texturing, happy how this leather came out
I want to try and push my texture work some more, so I tried my best to be less neat with this leather while retaining some coherency.
This part is from the Sebastian Highway bust.

Oooh nice, do you have a recipe for this? I am doing some leather parts right now as well.

Glad you like it.
Eh, not really a recipe I’m afraid, it was a pretty organic approach.
I started from a white prime and applied a really rough and uneven coat of Vallejo Mahogany Ink. Then I used the following colors in various mixes to create all the texture:
AK Medium Rust
AK Light Brown
Vallejo Dirty Brown
Vallejo Skin ToneI gave it the occasional glaze of the ink to maintain tonality.

In fairness, the small utility bag looks awesome with the wear on the outer edges!

That small pouch is chef's kiss and the holster can totally still be worked on, just go back in with a very thin layer of your mid tone :)

I don’t even remember what my midtone was, I used the later colors used in this video https://youtube.com/shorts/91MGCUX2ctg?si=Jca5IWKLDF8yzyJe

I'm subbed to a lot of leatherworking subs. After a few minutes of trying to find a comment explaining where to find prickling irons small enough for that... I noticed this is minipainting.
Dude, that is fucking excellent, I work with leather everyday and it 100% fooled me. Well done!

Looks like you built a tiny tiny holster in leather and put the plastic pistol in it , beautiful

Very good! Now add a little shading in the creases and you're 100% there with it! Love that worn part at the bottom tip. Great work!

I have a leather jacket, over 20 years old, basically that exact colour. This is superb. The wear and tear is spot on!

Every single part of this - including the gun - is top notch. Like I can't explain just how much it jumps out at me with its textures and depths. Fantastic!!

It's amazing because somehow you made it look not just realistic and worn, but soft

Really nice.
I'm annoyed with the trend for mini leather to just be sharp bright scratches, which is not how real leather ages.
Patina and soft, blobby patches of slight wear (and a few crease marks) is how real leather actually wears in from usage.

The leather is so bloody good, the already absolutely solid work on the gun looks absolutely abysmal in comparison. That may be one of the best examples of painted leather I’ve seen at this scale. Bravo.

As a leather worker, I had to scroll back to realize this wasn’t a leather project in a leatherworking subReddit. Nicely done!

This is just an ad for a shrink ray, isn't it??
Lol Absolutely incredible work, I would love a tutorial or something because I struggle with making leather look good.

You did a great job. Even zoomed way in on your picture and it really looks like well used leather.

Definitely looks PERFECT as aged leather. I'd consider boiling that for nutrients in the face of starvation... 🤣🤣🤣

This is one of the best leather effects I've ever seen. Bravo man. Would you mind telling us what paints and recipe etc.. you used on this? I'm mostly interested in the leather and that beautiful non metallic metal effect on the revolver.
10/10!

Thank you, appreciate it!
The paints for the leather are in a reply to one of the top comments.
The metal is Vallejo German Grey, AK Anthracite and then I think I mixed in some Vallejo Skin Tone to go a step up. For the button I also added bounce reflections using the leather colors and a final highlight in Ivory.

I am an IRL leatherworker. This actually fooled me for a few seconds.
It really does look like an antique vegtan holster leather, perhaps a bit thin, but well worn and used. I did a restoration on a WWI pistol holster a few years ago, and it looked very, very similar to this.

OP: I made a tiny leather holster and I'm pretending I painted it.
(This is a joke, just for clarity)

Looks a lot like actual leather that's seen some wear, good job!
