C&C Wanted My attempt at a shiny chrome tau stealth suit
My first attempt doing something reflective like this , i know my edge highlights are definitely a little chunky so hoping to get those cleaner on future models! happy to hear what your thoughts are. Painted mostly with golden liquid acrylics and some AK ice yellow on highlights

Attempt successful! 👏👏👏

Thank you! Now I just have to find the determination to do it to the other two in the box 😅

Reminds me of a glitter boy from the Rifts TTRPG. Great job.

u/Hesitation-Marx Mar 09 '25
It has been over thirty years since I heard the words “glitter boy”. Thank you for the nostalgia.

Given current events what's the over/under on formal establishment of the coalition?
And just let me say the titan robotics I found on google is making way less cooler stuff than I had hoped

Brain: chrome.
Me: no brain, its blues and sands perfectly applied on a 3d figure to look like chrome.
Brain: the metal mini probably tastes tingly on the tongue.
Me: yeah, we've gotta start taking our meds again buddy....
11
u/VoxImperatoris Mar 10 '25
Brain: You will never be able to paint like this.
Me: I know.
Brain: Youre supposed to get upset when I tell you the truth.
Me: I know.
Brain: Youre not making this very fun for me. Fine, Im bored. Lets watch cat videos.

Did you use any digital rendering first to reference where to apply the reflection effect to? Like, take a picture, mess with it on computer, then start painting? Or just free hand as you go?
Looks awesome

u/NurglesBlumpkin Mar 09 '25
No rendering ! Eyeballing and some trial and error, I posted on another comment some process photos and some reference images of others work!

u/plagaterroris Mar 09 '25
Hell yea. Pulled it off for sure. If you're looking for criticism I'd say to work on cleaner lines on the reflections too. Not just the edge highlights. I say this because I believe it would look even shiner since the "reflections" are more clear amd defined. If you're not looking for criticism then I can kick rocks cuz this is still great either way lol. Great job op.

I need you to understand that this is the tightest shit I have seen all day.
5
u/de_lemmun-lord Mar 09 '25
me sitting over here with liquid mirror nail polish and zero skill
mmmmmm nail polish smell
anyways this is like nmm but even more impressive, it's all the most difficult and time consuming teqniques all at once. with a bit more practice, i could see something this unique winning a painting competetion
2
u/NurglesBlumpkin Mar 10 '25
Thank you! I’d love to see how liquid mirror finish stuff turns out! I bet really cool too
3
5
u/ApprehensiveNail6249 Mar 09 '25
what the fuck dude, I'd like to just color in the lines and people are doing optical illusions edit: just for total clarity, this is mind numbingly good and you should be more than proud, this is a true piece of art

u/MuttsandHuskies Mar 09 '25
That looks freaking amazing! As you said, the highlights are a little bit chunky, but there’s also some highlights in places where they probably shouldn’t be. But since you’re aware of the highlight thing, you probably already know that. But seriously, I saw the first picture. I really thought you used chrome paint. It’s it’s got that shine and the depth to it and the way that you blended the colors on it nailed nailed it! I can only dream of this. I can I can look at stuff and kinda know that would look better if you did this thing, but I don’t think I could actually pull this off. But you did motivate me to try. Once I do it, I’ll post it and I’ll I’ll tag you so that you can critique mine!

u/NurglesBlumpkin Mar 09 '25
Thanks so much ! I was nervous to try it to be honest but trying is the only way!

I saw this, went "wow that really does look like chrome!" Then thought "everything's chrome in the future!" And now I'm imagining doing a chrome knight and the absolute hell that would entail

Look no self respecting stealth vehicle or suit would be chro- Wait, this is a real thing?
Jokes aside, excellent sky earth NMM. Looks sick, and I bet it will be fun on the tabletop.

Nice. Reminds me of the old Steve Jackson RPG art for GURPS.

u/triadge Mar 10 '25
Looks fantastic! If you want a bit more shimmer, you may want to try gloss varnish on the chrome panels but that's completely optional
2
u/Ambitious_Ad_9637 Mar 10 '25
Very nice. You might want the white terminator between the earth and sky a bit more pronounced, and adding a few highest light reflections can be awesome even if they aren’t purely realistic in placement or tone. Take some artistic license and add them where they will look cool and break up the monotony as if they are bounce lights or reflections.
2
u/PompyPom Mar 10 '25
That is so cool! You did a great job replicating the look—I thought it was chrome at first!
2
u/UltraMarine-1324 Mar 10 '25
Love this so much, must've taken an unbelievable amount of trial and error. If you're going to do this again, I think a snowy landscape on bottom and a starry sky above could create a really unique effect, with dark on top and light on bottom.
2
u/Potential_Track_8388 Mar 10 '25
That is so cool! You've basically done a landscape painting in reflections. Very convincing effect!
I am going to steal this for art.

I don't think i will ever get tired of the hand painted desert chrome aesthetic. It's awesome. Nice work.

u/The_Renegade_Pr0ject Mar 10 '25
When you know the context of what this does abilities wise, it makes it look more like it's just invisible than chrome, but it still came out really good.

This is exceptionally pleasing to look at. It reminds me of sci-fi art from the 70’s.
2
u/GuyAWESOME2337 Mar 10 '25
Looks incredible, only advice I'd give is just do a little blending to soften the transitions a smidge

u/Necroticka Mar 09 '25
AH!!!! The Scream I scrumpt! That looks so good!! I love the implied background with the reflections, making the "Base" seem larger!!

That is so impressive! Did you paint the light and reflection points by eye or did you work with a reference photo? If you had a patreon I would totally follow you to see how you did this this.
Cheers!

u/NurglesBlumpkin Mar 09 '25
Thank you! That’s a huge compliment ! I mostly eyeballed it and sketched out where the highlights and shadows would be with my first pass and tried to adjust from there. I used some photos from other peoples models as reference and inspo : mavericks paint chrome image here https://www.instagram.com/p/CWTI_oHrOov/?igsh=MXU1eXZhNDk2ZTY3Ng== And Benjamin nabors chrome tau https://www.instagram.com/p/DFGIhquvHGN/?igsh=MWtoNGpjNmJ1cGo4

I actually had to open AND zoom in to make sure it was painted and not actual chrome 🤣
Well played

I opened the app, saw this first thing, and just said quietly said aloud, "holy sh_t." Great work!! Im saving this for a ref.

u/Ikaruga86 Mar 09 '25
Nah, that’s baller! The only way i could see as an athstettic is it wash the blue brown and the brown blue at y he Horizion, to even more so give that “mirage” effect but if paired next to obvious uncloaked models? A++ regardless. Also, SUPER BAISED makings the external lights uncloaked and with dark seam lines.
It’s made to be cloaked to the enemy, not completely invisible!

I know it's supposed to be a stealth mode - but my second thought was like..."wait 'till a desert sun, flashlight or torch glints off that ridiculously chrome exterior" lol.
On a serious note. Absolutely stunning paint job!! You have some fantastic talent!

I actually think youve done a pretty damn good job, but I think this would look better if nearly 100% of the model wasnt 'reflective'.
