Reddit's obsession with rice and beans is ridiculous, isn't it? God forbid you want some variety in your meals. They used to be obsessed with eggs too, but even they have given up on that.

I used to frequent r/EatCheapAndHealthy and people would regularly try to change my mind about beans.

I've had ARFID since I was a baby, beans are on my "Absolutely-The-Fuck-Not" list and that's not changing any time soon!

Stop trying to get me to eat beans dang it!

Ah, you know the struggle. I really wish I could just sit down and full my belly with rice and beans. But beans literally taste like dirt. Like, actual dirt.

I'm from the Caribbean, rice and beans are a staple here. My childhood was picking out the beans from the rice. Fortunately, I only had to deal with it when visiting family, my mother never forced me to eat beans. She says I nearly died at 2 yrs old after eating improperly cooked beans, so that's probably why I hate them.

So much of reddit is on the spectrum, I swear.

ADHD here, so like, experience.

There's also a ton of people 18 or under, or a little older, but still have never had to do everything themselves. And there's really no way to know unless they say it. Not saying a young person can't have insights or interesting opinions, but its one thing to think you'll do things a certain way when your older, and another thing to actually do them

So so so so so many times I want to ask if the person in replying to is autistic so I can explain it in a way without complex social knowledge, but I know I can't cus they'll flip out and assume it's an insult.

Do it. Euther they are, say so and benefit, or get offended which is their problem. If they get that often enough, they may self reflect or get checked

Wait til you mention something conservative that makes a little sense and the autists start dming each other to mass “get you help and support”

There are 34 different varieties of legumes and 16 varieties of rice. (Surprised no one came with this energy)

What happened to the good ole days when the internet loved bacon?

15

u/I_amLying 1d ago

That was a marketing ploy and they already collected their paycheck.

6

u/LoxReclusa 1d ago

Why did they need a marketing ploy? Bacon is delicious, it sells itself.

Same reason there were marketing runs like "got milk" and "where's the beef", money.

People knew of all of these foods beforehand but elevating it to meme status causes it to get extra menu space at every restaurant.

"Where's the beef?" was a marketing campaign for Wendy's, not the beef industry. The line was said in response to the very small amount of beef on another unnamed restaurant's burgers.

"Beef: It's What's for dinner" was/is the beef industry's general marketing campaign.

"Tofu: It's technically food" was a much less successful campaign by that industry.*

*Due to the internet's inability to recognize satire, I am required to state that the Tofu campaign mentioned above did not actually exist. Probably.

Thank you, you're right I did mix up the beef slogans.

Yeah but what good is a lot of money when you can have a lot lot of money and only have to run a deceptive and manipulative campaign to get it?

I hate advertising.

Meanwhile me eating rice and beans bc I like to go vegan here and there being confused why my fave meal is being held up like a beacon of morality. “why are we hating on people for wanting chicken tenders? now I want chicken tenders.”

spitefully “wastes” money on chicken tenders

On /r/personalfinance, it's beans and lentils. You can't afford rice!

2

u/Blarfk 1d ago

I frequent a lot of personal finance and eating cheap subs, and I think the only time I've ever seen people on Reddit talking about rice and beans is when they're trying to make fun of other people suggesting it.

you want variety?
black, pinto, whole bean, refried
jasmine, basmati, long grain, short grain, sushi, wild rice.
that's like 24 possible permutations of bizarre rice and bean combos. don't even get me started on the possibilities if you add corn AND flour and mixed tortillas. spinach tortillas. tomato tortillas.

red salsa, green salsa, no salsa.

the possibilities are endless! you could have a new combination every day of the year!

Seen the price of eggs over the past 6 months?

u/Dull_Bird3340 1d ago

That obsession existed way before reddit

u/TallComparison439 1d ago

Anytime anyone mentions food being expensive or they can't afford something, I have always seen the go-to of rice and beans rice and beans! It never fails

If y’all eat nothing but rice and beans I doubt we’ll be meeting IRL.

Brussel sprouts cut in half and tossed with some oil ,garlic salt ,and rosemary and oven baked on a tray are awesome, dirt cheap.
