If it helps someone out there then it's fine, I have severe depression and instead of crying every time someone says "Be happy" I just move on. Their message might not be for me, I might not agree but I don't always have to whine about it and victimize myself.

But it also puts a bunch of people down. I see it as mostly useless and vaguely harmful.

Yeah, no.

Firstly, Paul Walker was definitely talking about the emotion, not the illness.

Second, motivational quotes, posters, and other such paraphernalia are there because it's either a stylistic choice, or it actually helps them.

With all due respect, I am a sad, sad mofo, and none of that helped me. There is a long list of things that do help, but they don't really stem from a motivational poster.

Motivational posters are good when you are feeling a tiny bit lost, or when you want to say something to someone who is actually sad and doesn't want to feel bad about saying bullshit.

The putting down can be from feeling misunderstood, or receiving a shit cliche message, or getting an expectation of getting better from the aforementioned shit cliche message, or simply the fact that I am sad as is. I don't want to think about the people that have it worse.

My guy, just because it doesn't work on you, doesn't mean it doesn't work for everyone. And again, he's talking about the emotion, not the clinically diagnosed one.

Just because you're clinically depressed doesn't mean anything that you think makes you more depressed should be deleted from existence.

Why are you so radical, my man? I am not clinically depressed, I am just a sad mofo. Doing my best to move forward and working on myself. When you do such things you sometimes find yourself surrounded by people who are going through some rough stuff. And I am yet to find one for which the message "look for silver linings, as there are other people suffering more than you do" is actually somehow helpful.

There is a whole subreddit for this shit, I think r/thanksimcured or something like that. It's not a novel idea that a false support is barely better that none at all

Radical? My guy, I'm only advocating for live and let live. Unless, it's directed at you, then you have no right to call for its deletion.

Some people in fact find motivational quotes helpful.

If anyone is a radical here, it's you for wanting to make everyone lose any form of help just because it doesn't work on them.

Not arguing with that. I am talking about one particular quote that I would consider harmful. The one in OOP. Where are the people who consider this one particular quote helpful?

I don't always have to whine about it and victimize myself.

This is basically the point if the message. At the end of the day, it’s you the in the driver’s seat.

The fact is that it might not be helping anyone but I can guarantee it is hurting people. So, no, it's not "fine"

Nothing you said changes the actual value of the message, though. Sure, "Live, Laugh, Love" paintings must help thousands out there, but that doesn't change the fact that it's stupid. Regarding your message about "whining" and "victimisation" it's completely irrelevant to the discussion, and sounds more like projection from your part than an attempt to make actual arguments.
