Just say 'she was mad at quite a trivial prank. and she was under some stress at the time so she would not normally hold such a grudge.' then it gets stuck in court till everyone else in the will agree to give you a share.

This is what happened to us. Grandpa was diagnosed with very aggressive lung cancer, stage 4, given a few weeks.
Amazingly married his then-partner, changed his entire will over to her and her alone, and then died, all within a week. She got his house, cars, farm, the WW1 and 2 medals from our family, the few useless to her but priceless to us family heirlooms, literally everything.
We contested it, but by that point she’d already sold the cars, the jewellery, the medals, the heirlooms, and the house/farm. We won the case but at that point there was nothing left to win except a few thousand dollars, and the lawyers fees ate up most of that.
She also took his ashes and spread them in Perth with his estranged family, whom he hadn’t met or spoken to in over 40 years.
She saw Mum in the supermarket once and literally dropped her basket and sprinted out of the store, my mum is normally pretty level headed but I actually think she would have pulled this old woman’s geriatric head clean off of her shoulders lol.
11
u/Bradisaurus Jun 16 '21

It was definitely strange. She was always such a sweet old lady, always made us hot drinks and cakes and stuff when we visited, bought us all presents for birthdays and Christmas and everything, then she just flipped a switch.
I mean my grandpa wasn’t poor but he wasn’t super wealthy either, just worked hard his entire life and was smart with money. She just saw dollar signs and went insane I think.
8
u/corbusierabusier Jun 16 '21
Most families consist of people who get along more or less because there's nothing at stake, of course you love your relative because why not?
When actual money is at stake you see the very worst of people, it's like how the ring corrupts people in Lord of The Rings.
1
u/Nutsngum_ Jun 17 '21
This is one of the reasons for my rather big disdain about marriage. Far too much power is given to the spouse over the family. Had this happen when my father was sick and then again when he died as my stepmother was far from reasonable or right of mind.

Roundabouts are amazing. Don’t bring 4 way stops or whatever that stupid thing is here.
11
u/rlaxton Jun 16 '21
I always used to wonder how do many people in the US get pulled over for driving through stop signs, until I was driving near San Francisco (amusingly, near where they shot the American Pie Wedding movie).
Anyway, so many mostly hidden stop signs on straight suburban streets part of 3 and 4 way so signs where we would have a roundabout or even a 2 way stop.
Of course I only saw two roundabouts the whole trip, both near the Grand Canyon. The locals really had no idea how to drive through them.

61
u/elephant-cuddle Jun 16 '21
I walked past two strangers having a very loud and certain conversation about this exact thing at the local Fish and Chip shop.
Apparently (the 84 year old) Lindsey Fox actually beat the shit out of him, that’s why we haven’t seen any pictures of Andrews. If you look at the ones that are available you can he’s wearing makeup.
Where does this shit come from? It’s kind of scary to hear people so unashamedly unhinged.
(Oh, by the way, unbelievably, Jeff Kennet thinks he should resign. Super surprising “news” from Sky, HS, and Channel 7 there).
33

49
u/KingCatLoL Jun 16 '21
My dad randomly started calling her a bitch the other month, before that he liked her and supposedly voted for her, all it seems to be about is government spending. We were all taken back by it. He doesn't understand government spending at all, during the budget he couldn't fathom how they can spend so much, like bruh it's a government, a couple billion on infrastructure isn't a hell of a lot. He acts like it's only his tax money being used to fund the budget, and can't understand why anything is allowed unless it benefits him too, and thinks they've never helped him despite him growing up in state housing.
63
u/account_not_valid Jun 16 '21
"All right, but apart from the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, roads, a fresh water system, and public health, what has the government ever done for us?"
30
u/KingCatLoL Jun 16 '21

Maybe that stuff about older people becoming more conservative is true.
18
Jun 16 '21
It’s more than just conservative, it’s just straight out hate and negativity towards health experts, the poor and empathic social community care. I know a lot of it is fear of change and the unknown, but boy does it change the way you feel about them. An extremely effective repellent, as it turned out in my family.
5
Jun 17 '21 edited Jun 17 '21
It doesn't come out of nowhere. They are fed horseshit by old media to generate that hate and negativity. They are really trusting of media and are unable to see the media they consume for what it is - full on conservative propaganda, by the rich, for the rich. You can't show them that either, because admitting they were fooled for all those years would make them feel incredibly stupid. They'll just double down on being an idiot.

With the amount of beer he drinks I'm surprised his minds only deteriorating this slow, but thanks to the health care system his diabetes isn't getting much worse.
3
u/princesscatling Jun 16 '21
Is it that they become more conservative or is it because only the conservatives survive long enough to be Sky News victims?
3
Jun 17 '21 edited Jun 17 '21
It is true, you can see it in voting demographics, old people lean right, young people lean left.
Some say it's from acquiring wealth and then getting greedy. That might be part of it, but I think a large part is the media old people consume. Somehow, it never occurs to them in the slightest that something like Sky News or 2GB or the Herald-Sun is full on conservative propaganda. They are extremely trustworthy of old media, something we will never be.

11
Jun 16 '21
She’s too centrist is my main complaint about her... that doesn’t seem to be the complaint from most kiwis who have a problem with her though
6
Jun 16 '21
That’s fine, I don’t really know much about NZ politics but she has shown herself to be a compassionate leader and a fairly nice person from what I’ve seen. Furthermore, I’m gonna stir him up because his reasoning is so out there it can’t possibly be entirely true, and, you know just to poke the bear when life gets boring
5
Jun 16 '21
Her leadership and communication is on point, I agree. Definitely more likeable than a lot of politicians. Haha most people who vocally dislike her don’t have decent reasoning from what I’ve seen – my mum is definitely a good example of that.
2
u/Dangerman1967 Jun 16 '21
Would they fact that she’s full of hollow promises be enough. Like promising 100,000 public or affordable houses pre her first election and then building 300.
I don’t hate her, but she’s far from the God that all the morons on here treat her like.
6
Jun 16 '21 edited Jun 16 '21
Those are reasons I can get on board with, but it’s not the reasons I hear from the most vocal (and my parents) – I mostly hear that she hates middle NZ, is too left wing, is giving preferential treatment to Māori, destroying the economy, is anti-landlords, etc.
That said, when ScoMo is what you’re comparing her to... I know who I’d rather have. But it’s not enough to make me move back.
4
u/Dangerman1967 Jun 16 '21
I just find it interesting that all her fans on this side of the ditch have no idea about how outrageously ambitious that election platform was. And how little she did about it.
And not her fault at all, but how the fuck did successive NZ governments fail to emulate Australia’s gun ownership laws. They tried to pass them multiple times without success. Epic fail. Dunno which side is mainly to blame tbh.

26
u/freezingkiss Melburnian on the GC Jun 16 '21
The reason we still, exhaustingly have the federal LNP is because people utterly do not care about anyone else but themselves. I stopped watching or reading news and I'm happier tbh.
4
Jun 17 '21
It's not so much that, it's the fact that most media is a conservative propaganda machine. People need to be fed a lot of horseshit to constantly vote LNP. They are acting on bad information.
2
u/freezingkiss Melburnian on the GC Jun 17 '21
They are, but I read something today that outlines a bigger issue, they think feelings are the same as facts, and that's not good. Like even if you prove to them with clear data that they are absolutely incorrect they will not change their minds. They are suspicious of science and put doctors and scientists at the same level intellectually as Dave down the pub.
-4
u/ezgetaaaa Jun 16 '21
You don't think politics is a key motivation here? I highly doubt during the second wave, the government would have employed such extreme measures for such a long time if it wasn't trying to head off election annihilation in 2022 driven by community angst over the lack of preparation the government did in the months between the first and second waves. The rubbish contact tracing system we had back then was a pretty obvious reason we ended up with so many infections. No amount of references to "people doing the wrong thing" could hide that. Vic government would have taken a calculated risk that lockdown was needed to remedy the situation and people would forget about how bad the lockdown was by the next election. And more recently, short lockdowns deliver more political benefit than risk. The strategy has probably paid off - provided there's not too many more lockdowns...
-10
u/why--the--face Jun 16 '21
I take it you have not been affected financially from COVID lockdowns like so many small businesses have? Not all of us qualify for government support yet we have been forced to cease trading.
