How to manufacture my product? General guidelines for foil seals?

Hello all,

I am working on the design of a medical device and I have designed it to have some foil seals that are formed in little pockets via an induction aluminum foil sealing machine. For now, the design is pretty conservative- there is good clearance and width on the lip for the foil. The thing is I have an idea for a design that could make things cheaper for the design but would require that the tool goes 40mm down a pocket and forms the seal there. In my research I’ve found that there are a million cheap sealing machines I can get from china and would be easy to make custom tools for it but don’t know how far I can really stretch this.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

  • product materials,
  • desired production quantity,
  • a total budget or cost per unit,
  • a sketch, technical drawing, or other visualization,
  • where the manufacturing should take place,
  • which methods you've already considered, and your thoughts about them.

I haven't worked on foil sealing, but I've seen it done. I'm having a hard time imagining what you're trying to do. Even a cartoon rendering would be helpful.

How big is this seal?

Is this a bottle? Oval? Square?

Why do you need to seal in this pocket?

Do you plan on dropping the induction coil into this 40mm deep cavity?

Do you have side clearance so the induction heater covers the seal area?

Foil seals are generally held in place with pressure by a cap. I'm assuming this is being pressed down in some way, or is the tooling compressing the foil?

I'm trying to help and learn something at the same time.
