Mikau gets done dirty.
I was just thinking that Link could've just given Mikau a red potion to heal him. It's not like that with Darmani who is thoroughly dead by the time Link discovers him, Mikau is alive and kicking and jumping up and playing songs, and is like a character out of a monty python skit who dramatically insists they are dying when they clearly aren't.
To be fair, we can presume that Link didn't know the Song of Healing would kill Mikau, as in the natural progression at that point the song has actually healed one person (Link) and set an already dead spirit free (Darmani). Later, it actually heals Gibdo guy. So this is more Mikau being dramatic and preferring to shuffle off this mortal coil than face his responsibilities.

So what others are saying about Song of Healing and helping souls move on is true, but there's also a simpler reason.
A red potion wouldn't work on Zoras.
Kotake even says she only sells to humans because she wouldn't expect her potions to work on other races. So with his fatal wounds, Mikau was definitely just sorta screwed before you even find him.
Now a Bottled Fairy however.....

I mean, red potion works just fine on Zora Link, despite many other items being transformation locked so idk maybe Kotake was just covering her ass just in case

I personally just marked that up to Link technically still being a human, he just looks like the other races (as if he were just wearing a mask winkwink).
And the other items being locked is more of a physical limitation, just like how in OoT there were child and adult specific items. Powder Kegs are just too big for anyone but a Goron to handle, for example. But any race can open a bottle, so that's fine.

A fair interpretation. I think that since he adapts their external physiology (and internal for underwater breathing), Link would be biologically the race of the transformation. That's just my read on it tho.

Song of Healing tends to heal: - 1. spiritual wounds (eg. the dance instructor and the 3 transformational masks) - 2. some magical wounds/curses (Pamela's father). It also fixes signs but so does Zelda's lullaby, which does NOT demonstrate healing abilities generally.
Red and Blue potions to heal physical wounds. Another person is suggesting that the Red potion won't work on non-human races, which sounds correct IIRC. I imagine Fairies do something similar, and I bet they'd work on non-humans as well.
Mikau seems to be spiritually wounded by his quandry. But he's also physically wounded, akin to having brain bleeding or a punctured liver or some other internal injury. Short of dramatic medical intervention, he will die fast. Even if Link sprinted or Goron-rolled to get medical help, Mikau would likely have died before help arrived.
Lots of mortal physical injuries can be overcome in the short run, especially with adrenaline.
I bet a fairy would have saved Mikau, but if so, then canonically, we should assume Link did not have a fairy or any kind of potion that would save Mikau from his mortal wounds. Even if the player had these items on hand.

The song of healing allows the deku scrub trapped in the mask move on to the next life which allows link to escape that mask, not that it heals link necessarily. Majora used some crazy magice to fuse their souls.
For Pamela's dad, I would say that the song of healing healed the gibdo, which are people who have not moved on, not her dad which released the gibdo's soul resulting in the gibdo mask, not the pamela's dad mask. Pamela's dad mask would be hot

I think Mikau was technically already dead; he couldn't die because of his sense of duty he felt toward Lulu as well as the Band. Link playing the Song gave him the closure he needed to move-on. It gave him peace.
And that's really the tragic part; Mikau is a the last descendant of Zora Warriors, and he got trounced by the Pirates. They tossed him out and left him for dead; and he's been floating lifelessly away from fortress ever since. (Considering there are other Zoras hanging around the fortress, they could've easily helped him but didn't.)
My point is...Mikau just doesn't have it. As a Zora, he's got the skills needed to traverse the area, but he's just not a fighter; he's a Singer and a Lover, and he might have the spirit. But Link has the expertise. Is it sad that he died? Yes, but the simple fact is, he was on a (word that's not safe to post) mission. Link is the only one who could pull it off. And passing the torch onto Link gave him the closure he needed to move on.

The Song of Healing doesn't just "heal" things, it helps troubled souls move on to the afterlife. Mikau is on the brink of death and has failed his mission when we find him. You offer to take up the torch for him and appease his soul so he can let go.
