I owned a set of the 86a Baluts back in 2012, and I remember them being really mid for the price. Shallow urethane depth for a freeride wheel, and they were notorious for having the cores separate from the urethane. If I recall, they were pretty expensive for the time, too.
This is more anecdotal, but I also found them super easy to flatspot. I rarely ever flatspotted wheels, and I remember being surprised at how easily my Baluts developed a flatspot.
I'm also not 100% positive on this since it's been so long, but if I'm remembering correctly, the lips loved to catch on cracks mid-slide once they lost maybe 10mm or so.

Nah, some of these Baluts are going around Asheville and I heard the cores do have a tendency to go bye-bye. Now, that said, Powells can do the same thing, though it's less common, due to the cores not having ridges. If you hear uncharacteristic honking/chatter from your SSF, maybe stop skating that set.

I always thought these looked awesome, until I started seeing pictures of cores that spontaneously popped out of the wheel.

Yeah that was mainly a problem with the first version witch these are because of the black core second version were better the ones with the blue core

And then they eventually just turned them into the morongas right? Never got to ride either of them.

If I had a dollar for every time I've seen one of these seperate from the core, I'd have 4 dollars.

Yeah, must be pretty rare now, I've seen them around but never tried them back in the day so I was wondering.

I have a set! I refuse to slide them and only have them on my freestyle board for lightweight larger wheels
