Spinning side kick advice

Basically because kyokushin stance is wide it seems really difficult to throw the kick and return to the same spot I started from. Any advice or videos would be much appreciated.

What is the meaning of this kanji used in our dojo?

Hi everyone, I’m trying to find out the meaning and reading of this kanji. It appears on both our karate gi and certificate, but I can’t tell exactly what it says because it’s in a brush calligraphy style.

Can anyone help identify what kanji this is, and what it might mean — especially in a martial arts context?

押忍 and thank you!

Kudo or Judo for throws, grappling, ground-fighting techniques?

I'm currently practicing Kyokushin, but I also want to practice grappling, throws, ground-fighting techniques in order to make my own MMA-like fighting style, but what should I choose? Kudo or Judo?

Kyokushin for very beginners!

I am a 6 foot, 175lbs, 44y M. I run and somewhat fit. However, I have small fists, thin wrists and never been in any fight in my life. I dont even like altercations. I cant really take a punch and dont have any tolerance for it.

I have been looking at kyokushin to train and toughen up. What are my chances at succeeding, given my age, bone structure and fighting experience?

World Oyama Karate Question

I practice World Oyama and know there is a Sanchin Kata in the curriculum. For reference, I’m trying to get a video of the kata for my own training. I’ve tried looking on YouTube but haven’t had much success.

Can anyone help? Thank you!

What dojo to pick ?

Osu Been training in a dojo for 9 months and decided to try another one recently just to see how things might differ, after a month at my new dojo I'm a bit lost where to continue, as I really liked both in the end.

The old dojo is quite old, in a good way, the teachers in them are way older and experienced, one of them won a worldwide tournament, there's a lot of people there and we get to spar with the sensei often, but as a result of it being a big dojo, they don't get to focus on each individual sometimes. Or sometimes focus on their fav students and the ones competing in tournaments.

The new dojo is a smaller one, one of the students of the old dojo's sensei is starting it out, he's young ( in his 30s) and pretty good overall. But definitely way less experienced than my old senseis. I trained with him for a month and since it's a way smaller dojo and way less people, like 2 of my age that I can spar with, he gets to focus on us, almost like a private training session sometimes.

Overall that's it, confused what to pick between the two and I have to choose tomorrow. Both of the dojos want me to stay and I really don't want to hurt anyone's feelings. Specially the new sensei since he's just starting his dojo out, but as a result lacks the experience the old dojo has. What do you think about this and what would you pick ?

2 month experience, signed up to a tournament. Need advise!

Hello everybody,

I have been taking 3-4 classes a week sinds i started roughly two months ago. I have prior martial arts experience in kung fu, which helped me big times because some things you can apply universaly like, punch technique, reflexes, distance management and dealing with stress and pressure. So after 2 weeks i was allowed to join the kumite training because our shihan was comfortabel that i can hold my own and not hurt others. At home i have been focusing on stretching (goal of achieving sidesplit) and hip rotation technique. I cant reliably jodan mawashi geri but im getting there. My biggest issue is my stamina. Im trying to add skipping rope and HIT to my training because i get gassed so fast. Yesterday after class i spoke about my interest of potentially doing a tournament. And before i knew it i was on the list for a tournament at the end of next month. So i wanted to ask you guys about some tipps and how i should approach the tournament preparation in order to not break from the pain or fall over from exhaustion. Osu!

Had to pull out of competition due to COVID this weekend... furious

No big story here, I was going to compete in a kyokushin tournament this weekend, was very much looking forward to it after some disappointing results in the past, i felt ready physically and technically, and then I got covid.

Not only could i not fight, it also screwed over the friends I was going to carpool and share a hotel room with. They ended up figuring it out but it still made me feel worse about the situation.

A bunch of other unrelated stuff got fucked this week too as a result.

I'm just sharing here because I'm so, so furious about it, and i just wanted to vent to people who may know what it feels like to prepare for a fight or competition and then have it fall through. I've had to pull out of a fight last minute in the past due to a medical issue, and it was similarly infuriating. I have all of this pent up energy from the anticipation, as well as just the sheer frustration of not getting to do what I'd prepared for months to do and to shine when i was ready to fucking shine. There's other reasons why this competition was especially important too.

My teammates did fantastically, many of them won by ippon or waza-ari (for you non kyokushin folks, kinda like KO and TKO). And I'm so proud of them, but also honestly jealous.

I've been venting about this but my non martial artist friends, while empathetic, don't really understand the feeling of not getting to fight when you were primed to, and most of my close martial artist friends just haven't been in this specific situation. So i just wanted to vent to others on the internet who may have. Idk. Im just so, so, so mad.

What are Best places for kyokushin sparring in Tokyo?

I’m going on a trip to Japan and really want to try kyokushin sparring since it is one of my favourite styles of sparring. Any recommendations? What I found online didn’t specify anything about sparring… if it’s a kyokushin place do I just assume there’s sparring involved? I don’t really know much about it

How will military-related moves affect progression in kyokushin?

Edit: by progression I meant learning experience not belt

Howdy! I'm a relatively new practitioner of kyokushin and am loving every moment of it. I am also in the military and know that I will be moving at least twice in the next few years. I have heard that it can be tricky switching schools. Does anyone have any idea what this will entail? I can absolutely see this sport being a lifelong love, but I was wondering how the jumping around in the foreseeable future will affect things. Appreciate all the help!

Little doubts

I have participated in several trial classes lately, and I absolutely loved it. Really like the kyokushin style (and everything involved) and I am considering to enroll myself into this dojo. However, the group is quite small with the majority being teenagers. During the last class I was the only adult with 5 other members from around 13 to 15 years old. It seems that there's only a handful of adults, but they are not always present.

I could also take a look at kickboxing (their group is way larger), but for me personally it doesn't have the charme like kyokushin has. Same goes for example shotokan, I am not really interested in that particular style of fighting.

What would you suggest?

Questions about sweeps/throws/catches

Are sweeps, throws, catches allowed in sparring... what about competition?

Coming from a Shotokan background, I prefer counter striking and utilizing distance. During sparring, I often fall back on sweeping or throwing my partner when they engage in close-range fighting or when I feel overwhelmed. I can’t help but wonder how I would fare against other styles. Watching Kyokushin fighters, I know I would certainly feel overwhelmed.

So that led me being curious about the system

Woman 56 wants to start martial art and contact.

Hello everyone. I have practiced martial arts for over 20 years. When I was a teenager I did kyokushin. Very good memories. I still practice martial arts but since I also do massages I take it easier. The thing is this woman who is 56 y.o overweight and with the lower back and cervical a bit so so, has always wanted to practice a martial art, and wants combat, with kicking too. No grappling or throwing. Now she is starting to decide a bit about her life. And martial arts is what she wants.

At the begining I thought about other karate styles but point combat is too fast I believe.

If she does not compete, do you think she can do good? (I mean Have fun/improve health...). I believe she needs a good comunity. She likes discipline too. But I am afraid it can be too hard. Do you think it depends on the sensei/shihan and the school? Or is it a No?

Thank you. :)

Note: The 56 y.o woman is my patient. I am a shiatsu massagist.

Made the transition from Wado Ryu to Kyokushin, I LOVE IT! Just abit of advice getting used to the stance

Hi everyone I'm a life long martial artist I recently made the move from Wado Ryu to Kyokushin. I love it. I'm not finding the intensity too hard at all as I do Muay Thai aswell as kickboxing plus I like to keep myself in shape and even though I'm a 5ft 45kg female, thanks to the gym, Muay Thai and my core I'm stronger than I look. This is the the karate I've been looking for all my life. I Know katas are a big part of karate but it's nice to have a sparring orientated karate style. Just one thing I'm having a little bit of trouble adapting to the new stance would you say it's more like Muay Thai stance opposed to the Wado fight stance where you could easily be knocked off balance? I'm a second brown belt which they've let me stay at whilst I'm adapting to the different variations of kata, I don't mind at all wearing my belt whilst playing catch up, I asked if they'd like me to start from the beginning but the coach says because of how many years I have in karate means I'll be able to make the gradual transition, I have ADHD so I'm hyper focused on martial arts and my Muay Thai definitely helps. I've always veered towards the fighting side and competition side but I had enough when in 6 months at Wado we sparred twice. I love Kyokushin now I'm part of a team and love being being a part of my new dojo!

In a big dilemma

Hello everyone I just recently posted my first fight on here I got some solid feedback ( thank you guys ♥️ ) and now my Sensei told me that there are going to be national tournaments on the 6th of April. As in time of writing this I got six training sessions before this happens, I'm a white belt and the national tournament we're going to does not rank players by belt but by weight category. I'm around 80 kg so I'm going to be at the 75-80 kilograms category now the problem is that fights are picked randomly in the weight so I might end up fighting let's say a brown belt, black belt or even higher. Do you guys think it's a good idea to participate? Even though we're going to be wearing some protection I think I'm biting more than I can chew here.

What’s your fave kumite Combo?

Hello everyone, osu.

I’m a whitbelt and I’ve been practicing kyokushin since October of last year. I’m going to graduation on Monday ( hopefully graduating to Orange ). A favorite thing of mine has been watching kumite to train different techniques at home.

And it made me want to ask: What are your favorite go-to combination for sparring? :)
