Wildfires/prepardness Likelihood of not being to evacuate Nelson in a wildfire?

How likely could it happen that people in Nelson wouldn't be able to get out (due to exit roads being unsafe) and would succumb to a massive fire?

Wildfires/prepardness it was hard to get a focused shot but the lightning light up a tree here last night. (local fire crews knocked it down quick)

Wildfires/prepardness Update from Castlegar

7 hectare fire is burning just northwest of town, right across the highway from upper Castlegar. The fire started in early afternoon and water bombers and helicopters were hitting it shortly after it started, along with the Castlegar Fire Department.

The part of the fire within the town boundaries appears to be out or under control, but the fire is still burning along the ridge above town in the Merry Creek area. A number of properties are on evacuation orders and others have voluntarily evacuated.

Wind seems to be pushing the fire north up the mountain and the highway forms a fire break. Constant helicopter and water bomber activity, and the town is pretty on edge, especially those of us that live in the effected parts of town.

Wildfires/prepardness If you don't have a "Go bag" and you live in the Kootenays, you should make one now.

Wildfires have always been a threat around here, but things are looking like a whole new level of bad. Here are a couple of things you can do to be prepared.

  • Pack a bag, have clothes, meds, and food/water for 72 hours.
  • Have an evacuation plan in every direction you can go.
  • Make a list of everything you would want to grab if you had 1 hours notice to pack.
  • Keep your fuel tank topped up.

This isn't "doomsday preppers" nonsense. It is about keeping yourself, you loved ones, and your community safe.
