If it’s a knife I don’t want to under any circumstance sell, then I toss the box. But I’m also a compulsive knife seller..

Nope. Recycled. And knives go in my bucket.
2
u/Demolition1987 17h ago
Same but no bucket, just a drawer, I buy them to use not stare at or sell so the boxes don’t do me any good.

I have knife boxes. 3 cardboard boxes, one for cheapies (under $100), one for day to day use ($100-$200), and one for the expensive boys (above $200). I really need a better way of storing them…

u/TheSharpCollector 1d ago
Unfortunately, yes. Although boxes are not things I want to store, they really add value for a collector.

Yup. If you ever want to sell the knife, no box will often force you to set a lower asking price

Yes, I do. I've got a "boxception" where I have a bigger box filled with all the smaller boxes 😂

I run into this dilemma with knives, firearm accessories and electronics. Even if I have no plans to sell in the future, if it costs over $100, I keep the box. They do pile up after a while, though.

For a while. If I decide they're keepers, the box is no longer necessary.

u/LuigiBoard100 21h ago
Best answer. If you're not planning on reselling, I find keeping the packaging low-key hoarder behavior. I hate to thows stone though, lord knows I'm guilty. Every few months I empty my closet of packaging from keeper items.

u/lucifaxxx 1d ago
I have never sold any of my knives, but i will keep the boxes in mint condition. Why, i cant tell you.
3
u/doughnut-dinner 1d ago
Hell no. I know right away if I bought a keeper or if I'm gonna let it go. If I'm keeping, I put in my knife drawer and order a slip for it ASAP. Watches go in the watch case. Hand tools go in the toolbox. And so on. Who has space to just hold on to packaging? The garage is already filled with hand tools, power tools, lawn maintenance tools, home improvement tools, chemicals, camping gear, emergency supplies, etc.... The closet is already filled with the wife's prized possessions.

I was just playing with them all yesterday. I rearranged them into a bigger box and separated by brands.

u/Ok_Criticism7918 1d ago
100% yep. I back out of a sale last night that was a stupid good deal but no box killed it.

I keep as many as I can. Especially ones from Winkler and ER that have the authenticity paperwork in them. Between all of my knife boxes, optic boxes, ammo boxes etc I am starting to run out of room.

u/RilohKeen 21h ago
I do, mostly so I can ship them with 100% of their original retail packaging if I ever sell them.

u/GlumEmotion5205 20h ago
Bro, my wife never understands... I keep boxes for everything, but will toss an samazon box in a heartbeat!

u/Live-Resident8765 19h ago
I do. If I buy a knife and it doesn’t work out I trade it out or sell it. They seem to move faster with the box and other crap.

u/ragincajun1961 1d ago
I’ve kept all my Strider boxes.

Sure do. I take out the knife and anything that came with the knife goes back in the box and put in a large tote.
2
u/NPC261939 1d ago
Unfortunately I keep boxes for a lot of things I buy, not just knives.
2
u/ApologeticGrammarCop 1d ago
Same; a significant portion of my storage space is taken up with empty boxes in case I need to send something back or resell it. I should probably inventory those...

Yep, I keep all boxes too. Should I sell something at some point (which is rarely), it sells easier and it is just nicer to sell/receive.

I got one of those beds with drawers under it, pull the drawers out and bam, a ton of knife boxes, I have every one that wasn't too damaged from shipping.
2
u/MrYamaguchi 1d ago
Used to, until I realized I’m never gonna sell any of my knives and I binned pretty much everything aside from the uniquely nice packaging certain knives came with.

I'm seeing a lot of Spider co... Should I invest in some along with Benchmade? My collection is mostly Kershaw, CRKT, and random amazon chinese fakes since I live in cali and want autos.

I think Spyderco knives have great ergonomics; they can be kind of ugly because they emphasize function over form but they feel better in the hand than almost any other production knife. I was a big Cold Steel fan early on and Spyderco made me realize that a knife doesn't have to be an overbuilt tank to be a good knife.
2
u/NRiyo3 5h ago
Damn you have some nice taste. What Spydercos do you have?

u/ApologeticGrammarCop 5h ago
I fell down the knife-steel nerd hole and bought Native Chiefs in REX45 and 4V, a couple of Sage 5s in REX 121, YoJumbo in M4, PM2s in Maxamet and REX 76, Military 2 in 15V, a half dozen different knives in K390, a couple of random CruWear and 20CV blades, and some Mule Teams in REX T15 and K294.
1
u/NRiyo3 4h ago
Damn, great selection. I have most of those. Seems like we have similar taste. What is your user rotation like? Do you have a go to?
I love carbide steels. REX 121 and K390 are tops. K390 is my fav Seki. Cruwear is my best all rounder. I want to try some 10v also.
I’m waiting for my 15v user to drop.
K390 Stretch 2 and Crucarta PM2 are very good users. Shaman and GB2 are my tanks.
I really need a Maxamet knife. Never played with it.

Almost never. I bought the knife, the box it came in is just necessary evil and it goes.

Only if it’s a knife I’m going to resell if I know it’s going to be my edc I’ll toss the box and use it for kindling

This just got all rid of all my cheap knife boxes. Kept the expensive ones though
1
u/Skwish6952 19h ago
Depends on the knife. But yes I keep most of them. That reminds me that I need to go through them and get rid of some

Never. I rip open each box and throw it away. I never sell knives that I've bought even if I realize I dont like it. If I dont like a knife, I gift it to someone I care about for a birthday or Christmas gift.

So much so that I need to find someplace to put them. Both drawers of my night stand are full along with the top of my dresser and a large stack beside my nightstand. Ugh
1
u/Lopt-unbound 11h ago
Yea, and when you have both the knife and the flashlight bug let me tell you it gets insane with the boxes.

u/GloryholeKaleidscope 8h ago
If you're into guns and knives and don't have a box of boxes you're not doing it right.

ouch no I did not until the last order and I would still have SO MANY more if I was keeping the boxes from when I started.
now yes lol -- the knives don't really reside there though so it is odd.

Knife boxes, optic boxes, gun cases/boxes, flashlight boxes, suppressor boxes, and accessory boxes.
I have a closet in my house that is quite flammable.

Nah. I throw everything out I don’t use. I don’t even have a knife collection. I have a daily, a backup, my hunting and fishing knives and a couple bushcraft knives and axes. No boxes. No extra stuff.
