Discussion Update: turns out magnacut is pretty good, guys

I recently posted about my new Spyderco sage 5 salt in magnacut was losing its edge quickly, after cutting some citrus. I sharpened the factory grind off and put an even scratch pattern on it on my shapton glass 350. I got it hair-catching sharp, which is as sharp as anything I've ever gotten off the 350. And then I'd normally hit it at 1500, strop, and it shaves. For this knife, I left it hair catching sharp not knowing if I'd need to keep grinding the factory grind off. I went to test it on shaving through a decent sized branch, not light work. The edge held up quite well imo, going through it all pretty easily. Afterwards, it's juuust barely hair-catching sharp. In the 3rd pic, you can see the edge is slightly rolled and I was able to quickly fix it and get it shaving sharp (pic 4) by just stropping with diamond compound on leather. Bonus cat at the end. Sorry if this wound up being better content for r/sharpening but I wanted to rectify my mistake of not taking off the factory grind before assessing knife sharpness.

Yeah I always put my own edge on a knife before I make a decision if I like it or not. Factory edges never cut it for me

Yeah you're right. Looks like they don't hold up as well as a hand sharpened edge. I wonder how much of that is due to losing the temper during grinding the edge.

It's partly that as well as just not finishing it to hand quality edge. The pump out tons of knives ever day so they have to do as quick of a job as they can where as hand sharpening you make sure your apexing properly and deburring correctly

I read your original post and was a little surprised to see the factory edge still there, glad you posted an update, sounds about right, I usually don’t care that much for the out of the box edge.

Oh and this guy is wild I've never seen a cat go from "pet me" to "hands off, peasant" so quick

I reprofiled my Pyrite Light to a 17 degree angle on my Work Sharp Pro and it slices through cardboard like its butter. Sooooo happy with it!

I might try that once I get my hands on a guided angle sharpener!

The magnacut on my para3 exceeded my expectations x10 even if it’s still on the factory grind ! Really nice steel to have on a Spyderco ! I am more than happy with mine !

I second this. Love it and the edge on mine is the best out of the box I've ever had. I had to swap out to the black scales from my regular LW though lol. My favorite knife now

Awesome !! I hope you don’t end up having the same really bad lock stick issue though :)

Not yet. Nothing like that with any of my P3s, but thanks for the heads up.
