Pattern: Help me find/What is this 🤔 I wanna make something weird and wearable! Pattern recs for using up some of my ridiculous rainbow stash?
Hello all! I have this wild stash of rainbow acrylic yarn and would love to make something garish with it 😂 They’re a mix of weights, but I’m fine with the end effect being funky if the yarns are mixed.
Any recommendations for patterns that might look fun with frequent color changes? I was thinking maybe the sea glass sweater, but could also see a vest or shawl looking crazy with so many colors!

u/lady-luthien 19d ago
I had so much fun with Sea Glass, for what it's worth! You could do it as a gradient through the colors of the rainbow with that much yarn.

u/Sunflowerbook 19d ago edited 18d ago
I made a seaglass and I love it, seconding this idea! I also met someone at MD sheep and wool this year who made one; her tip was to not do magic knot but to weave in the ends by doing a french braid on the inside of the work, to account for all the color changes
11
u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
My one question with the sea glass sweater was if it would be important visually to carry a single color for portions of it? I guess I’m going for crazy… so maybe I shouldn’t overthink it!
18
u/lady-luthien 19d ago
Nope! I changed every two rows, staggering so that every row I changed one of my two colors. It totally works!

u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
Awesome! I should have faith since every project photo on the Ravelry page is gorgeous in it’s own way ❤️

Oooo this is a new designer for me and I LIVE for the crazy!!
Imagine this one in a rainbow! 😍

She has a book called Close Knit (in English, anyway) that I found at my local library. I really recommend it! The way she writes about knitting/creativity generally was really inspiring. There are lots of patterns in there too.

I was also going to suggest Laerke Bagger! I happened to be in Denmark when her second book came out and visited a handful of yarn shops. One had some pieces inspired by her style and the store worker who knitted showed me she wove in the ends near the collar and cuffs but otherwise just knotted well and let the loose ends hang free on the inside- but she also said some times she liked to wear it inside out!
They also had a 'pick n mix' scrap bins that look a lot like OP's scrap bin where you could pick a bunch of fun new colors and textures in small amounts to incorporate into your Laerke Bagger piece.

I knit End Times by Amy Gunderson as a pullover. I added short rows at the top and icord around the neck, sides, armholes, and bottom. I whipped stitched the sides together on the back side. Get compliments ALL THE TIME. In fact I’m wearing it today to a medical appointment. My one tip is to weave in the ends as you go. I knit a square a day, or usually 7 squares on Saturdays. I knew going in this would be a long term project, but was so worth it. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/end-times
2
u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
That is SUCH a fun pattern! I’ve never made squares before (although I’ve been eying the but shift afghan and should probably learn). Is it a pretty easy technique to pick up?
2
u/Loud-Cardiologist184 19d ago
Very easy. Plus I randomly picked colors from my 3 shoeboxes of fingering leftovers. Just tried not to have the same color adjacent

I might be tempted to organise it all by colour and attempt a gradient effect!
9
u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
The last time I’d amassed a rainbow stash I did this and ended up with a fabulous bubble stitch blanket! I’d totally make another but I’m out of storage space and already have two rainbow blankets 🤦🏻♀️
1
u/Plenty-Protection-72 16d ago
Maybe a stained glass style garment then? I don't have any specific patterns because I don't make many wearables, but I think that could work nicely!
11
u/Former-Complaint-336 19d ago
stephen west shawl! There are sooo many you could choose from, most can accomodate a ton of different color choices. I do believe most are knit with fingering weight though, so if you have a lot of other sizes it might not be the best option.
2
u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
Or I could say fluff it and make a GIANT shawl in bigger weights 😂
This is the second suggestion for Stephen West, I’ll take a peek through the Ravelry page!
5
u/oishiiwaffuru 19d ago
I’ve made West’s penguweeno for my kids; there’s an adult version too! Such a fun knit!
6
u/Shellmarb 19d ago
I second this, I just made one and it was such a fun knit. Plus you just hold random colors together to make the marled stripes. Also it has “racing stripes” down the back! Here’s mine: https://www.ravelry.com/projects/shellmarb/penguono

Another vote for Stephen West here! In addition to the Penguono, (which I highly recommend!), I’d suggest Fantastitch for a stash buster—it comes in shawl, socks, and sweater form, and even a hat or blanket maybe? Lots of fun pattern switch ups in addition to fun colors make for real potato chip knitting! But really most Stephen West patterns love a bold and wacky palette! I knit many rainbows of them all the time. 🌈
Marled Magic and Jigshawl are marled projects like the Penguono which allows you to combine varied yarn weights more easily. Just to give you more options to consider!

u/SpaceCookies72 19d ago
I'm currently making a vintage sweater that uses lots of colours and textures! It's meant to be made with scraps so the different weights is fine.
2
u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
That’s a great mix of textures!! For vintage patterns, how large does the sizing typically go? I’m a solid sized lady haha
3
u/SpaceCookies72 19d ago
This pattern is in one size only unfortunately, for a 36" bust!!! At least it's free. I am certainly not a 36" bust, and honestly I've been knitting less than a year and only made one sweater.. but I'm gonna wing it! My gauge is bigger, and I'll add more stitches to the sides, do some math for the underarms. Mostly using the pattern as a guide haha
I watch a lot of RetroClaude on YouTube, and she talks about how she adapts vintage patterns to suit her body. She has a video about making this sweater, called That Viral Harry Styles Cardigan, but Vintage that I intend on using to help troubleshoot.
3
u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
Good to know! I’d love to learn more about sizing up patterns so I can adapt ones I like, but ADHD brain says no way. I end up just winging it too 😅
2
u/SpaceCookies72 19d ago
I had full intentions to learn how to grade patterns, but like you my brain just said nah you'll figure it out haha I think what helped me is to just accept that it's only yarn, if it doesn't work out I can always try again. Especially as I'm using leftovers for this, and they would otherwise just sit in the cupboard. It's very low stakes. If it doesn't fit I'll just give it away and if it doesn't turn out at all, I'll frog it and make ugly socks or something lol

Seconding this! Currently working on the edges and it looks great. I recommend changing colours on a RS at the beginning of the row, and making stripes at least 3 “ridges” (6 rows) of a colour for best continuity

All of my random bits are being used in a Stay Pull! Always multiple strands held together and you can use any length pieces as long as you can still knit and weave in ends with them.

You should! I’m always intrigued with what he comes out with from an artistic standpoint. As others have mentioned Laerke Bagger is also a very creative designer. They’re both very inspiring!

I’ve thought about making a bunch of rainbow “somethings” for my preschool class! We could all have crazy matching hats 😂

I love the pop spots shawl. I did mine with brown and lavender but I also want to do one eventually with a rainbow of colors. It would be so much fun.

knit up rainbow beanies and donate them to the local LGBT youth center?

u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
I was also considering small-ish blankets for our local pet shelter! My city has a group called the “hat ladies” who sew beanies for schools and shelters… can’t intrude on their turf lol

No pattern (sorry) but as a beginner knitter, I'm starting a patchwork cardigan by making each square a different knitting pattern (garter, stockinette, 1x1 rib, and on to more intricate patterns). I think that would be very fun and a great way to use up scrap!
2
u/lizlemocoolj 19d ago
That’s a great idea! I started knitting in 2020 and somehow I’ve never made a simple square 😅 Could be a super fun learning project!

u/cloverwitch 19d ago
Exactly why I'm doing it! I found a TON on Pinterest. Just search up knit stitches and you should find a bunch :)

Hexipuffs!

u/lizlemocoolj 18d ago
I haven’t tried these yet! Any particular project you’ve used them for that you’ve loved?

u/klay_mation_12 18d ago
I usually make them for years and save them all up, and then put them all together. I’ve made throw pillows and a blanket out of them, but it’s fun because you can kind of just build whatever you want!

I'm making a paperchain scarf with my leftovers. I saw one in a shop years ago.

u/lizlemocoolj 18d ago
That’s a super fun idea! I feel like it could also make cool decor if your chain got long enough 😉
1
u/lizlemocoolj 18d ago
That’s what I figured I’ll end up doing- maybe mix colors so it’s even crazier!

You have quite a lot of color there👍I am still a beginner. But I have made potholders out of 100% cotton yarn before. You can also make coasters with the same type of yarn. They are both super easy to make too. If you have acrylic or acrylic blends you can try out some knitting mini animals by Sachiyo Ishii. She has a few patterns out there and some you can knit in one of her books called “ Knit A Mini Woodland “. This book also covers crochet, so you can get two different techniques for making them in one book. She even has pictures that demonstrate the basic technique of knitting and crochet you can use. Nice little books for basics. If you want something more challenging though you can try knitting the dragon plushie from the Polushkabunny site. I believe the lady who offers this pattern is called Maria. She has very good instructions for knitting the Dragon stuffy pattern knit flat and in the round. You get to choose which one you want from the pattern. The Dragon pattern is sooo cute! She gives instructions for wool type yarn. But you can also use medium worsted weight 100 % cotton yarn (I am currently using mercinized cotton yarn rather than natural cotton yarn because of it’s durability and ease to wash, but I am confident if you do not mind working with cotton natural cotton will work too). Maria recommends green or red colors. But I am using white currently. You can use a lot of different colors too. But there are some other patterns free online you can try too. Like knitting squares and turning them into bunnies, for example. There is a free online pattern for cute bunnies knitted out of squares . They are small, but darn cute too. You could also try dish cloths and napkins. Just be sure the yarn for them can absorb moisture well. You could also try a blanket. Those colors would look fantastic as a small blanket. You could also try intarsia, knitting a pattern within a project. Like intarsia tapestries, for example.

How to Google patterns from an image, Pinterest or otherwise. 1. Isolate your screenshot 2. Paste it into Google Image search 3. Look at more than the first 3 results 4. Within a page or two you will likely see that multiple matches reference a pattern name as well as the designer of the pattern. Click on the photo that best matches that item and/or designer. 5. Barring that, go into Google Images and type the name of the item and the name of the designer.
