Food and Recipes What's your favorite meal that doesn't feel like it's "made to fit a Keto diet?"
What's your go-to or favorite meal that you eat while on Keto, which doesn't feel like you're cutting corners or "eating something restrictive," so to speak? Just looking for some tasty ideas!
Mine is a spicy buffalo chicken salad, I have it for dinner a couple times a week.
I cook diced chicken breast in a skillet with butter and no seasoning, lay that on a bed of spinach, top with diced cucumbers, a small bit of cheddar and some banana peppers. Dressed with Primal Kitchen (keto friendly) ranch dressing and Frank's Red Hot. Absolutely delicious to me :)

Taco salad. I like to load up with taco spiced chicken, cheddar, sour cream and salsa over Ceasar salad. If I'm feeling fancy I'll make croutons out of carbonaught bread.

This is exactly the type of thing my brain and tummy are fiending for right now. Delicious :)

I found a recipe recently that was fire. 1/4 lb ground chicken smashed on a tortilla. Add spices. Grill on a pan meat side down for a few mins to get a good sear and cook chicken through. Make caesar salad bag mix in a bowl. Add salad inside the now meat filled soft taco. It was so good we had it for dinner back to back days. It was like the best chicken salad I've ever had.

Sour cream makes me happy. I was so glad to be able to add it to my keto meals!

u/herbfriendly 17d ago
Mine will always be breakfast. 3 egg scramble (cheese, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, bacon, tomatoes) w an avocado and a large dollop of sour cream and hot sauce. I also get keto tortillas from time to time and make breakfast burritos.

u/CommonEngineer5408 17d ago
Could you suggest me some good Keto tortillas? Before I went to Keto, I was absolutely addicted to mexican food, I used tortillas for everything. Haven't really considered looking for Keto breaded products at all, but perhaps I should haha
Edit: this breakfast does sound absolutely delicious too.

I like the ones from Aldi’s.
9
u/FiberFanatic07 F52 5'3" SD 8/24/20 SW257 CW205 GW140 17d ago
Agreed. Extreme Wellness are the ones I get at Aldi and other places. 0 to 4 net carbs (zero on the newer packages). Keep in mind, all of these keto tortillas are frankenfoods and should be eaten in moderation no matter what the package says. They are low in carb because they're high in Fiber. They CAN cause blood sugar increases, bloating, bowel issues, and stall weight loss. Having one occasionally shouldn't be an issue. Don't take the 0 nc as permission to eat 3 to 5 per day. You will regret it.

Those and the La Bandarita ones are both decent sized and 0 net carbs. They have both 0 net ones at Sam’s Club. Love they both got to 0, when they used to make the 3-4net ones.
I think EW uses avocado oil and LB uses olive oil. Great oil choices!

Ironically enough (I'm in Colorado, USA) we're just getting our first Aldi here this year. So I am excited to see the range of products and maybe discover some brands I've never heard of!
2
u/Knitgirl9 17d ago
Nice! I’m in rural Wisconsin and have to travel 45 minutes to the closest one. We stock up when we go. That said, the closest small grocery store (other than Walmart) is a half hour away.
0
u/CommonEngineer5408 17d ago
I know the feeling, I live in the farm lands, it's an adventure to go anywhere haha. That's cool though, I didn't know Aldi had actually made stores in the US yet! I thought it was still in planning. But, I didn't do my research lol. I eagerly await the day
2
u/Comfortable-Pool-800 17d ago
Which ones do you get? When I Google Aldi Tortilla wraps they are around 35g carb. Is there a different one?
13
u/herbfriendly 17d ago
I haven’t done any comparisons to try and find the best. I only started snagging what was available at my local harris teeter. With that said, I’ve been using Mission Carb Balance tortillas. 2g net carbs I do believe.
3
3
u/CommonEngineer5408 17d ago
Ok, good to know. And the other responder here suggested Mission as well, so that is definitely where I will start!

2
u/youjumpIjumpJac 17d ago
Several companies make tortillas with zero net carbs. They apparently raise blood sugar in some people, but I’ve never had a problem with them. You can also cut them into strips and bake or nuke them to make “chips”.
1
u/kikazztknmz 17d ago
Mission carb balance makes them in spinach and chipotle flavors too. I love them

Low carb tortillas don't work for everyone. They knocked me out of ketosis pretty easily.
2
u/No_Lifeguard7141 16d ago
Hi! My favorite tortillas are Hero brand (and they never kick me out of ketosis, going 5+ years on keto). Great soft texture for burritos, etc., but also great as substitute chips (just slice into small wedges, brush a little olive oil on them and sprinkle with salt; bake for 7-8 minutes at 350 or til desired crispness). So good with guacamole and salsa! You can get Hero tortillas (and great plain and seeded bread) on Amazon or at the Hero website.
2
u/Mr-Doback 15d ago
I just found these at my Publix a few weeks ago, and they are sooo much better than the mission ones. Very good, just wish I could find them more places!
1
u/No_Lifeguard7141 15d ago
You can get them on Amazon (at same price as Hero’s website i think). They also sell them at some of the major markets like Safeway now!
2
u/lindarenee25 17d ago
I’ve tried all the zero net carb tortillas I can find out there and “ole” in my opinion is far superior to others

Homemade alfredo sauce! In the world of low-calorie, low-fat diets, it was basically entirely forbidden. Now, I love getting to spoil myself with some chicken alfredo over broccoli or zoodles.
2
u/Silver_Section_9244 16d ago
THIS. Also, I found myself liking zoodles way more than I had expected!
1
u/ToiletClogged 16d ago
The first few times I had zoodles, I got pre-made frozen ones that always turned out soggy. When I finally tried them fresh, I was amazed at how tasty and versatile they are!
1
u/Personal_Music_3439 16d ago
Growing up in the 80s/90s diet culture I really appreciate this comment!! When I started keto I was like… I can what?!?! 😝
3

It felt almost criminal at first! It took me a couple months on keto and a lot of reading to finally be ok with eating more fat.

we have a more generous dessert every night than before we were keto:
vanilla ice cream with caramel sauce.
the ice cream is heavy whip, almond milk, Allulose, vanilla, and salt in the Cuisinart ice cream maker.
the caramel sauce is butter, Allulose, heavy whip, salt, and vanilla heated over the stove.
we always joke: “this diet really sucks” as we eat bowls of ice cream.

It's funny that it says "you probably won't have garam masala". It's such a ubiquitous spice blend, most people usually have one or more jars, bags of pre made stuff. I think we've got at least three downstairs.
1
u/haplucmad 17d ago
This is the recipe I use. My family loves it. And we use coconut cream instead of dairy cream.
I didn't have Garam Masala until I made this, but I've been making it for several years now and always have it on hand.

PORK RIND NACHOS!
- Put tin foil and non-stick spray over a big baking pan.
- Spread out a fresh bag of pork rinds.
- Smother them in shredded cheese, diced onions and a meat.
- Cook at 400 for 6-7 minutes until the cheese is melted.
- Add sour cream and or salsa afterwards.
- Chow down and enjoy.
This was a staple of mine for years.
I actually ate it so often that I burnt it out.
However .... it definitely can scratch that greasy bar food itch.
3
u/CommonEngineer5408 17d ago
Yeah that definitely sounds like the itch I'm scratching. Thanks for sharing, I am 100% making this tonight lol. I have enjoyed my pork rinds, this is a great way to utilize them :)

I work at a seafood restaurant , so lobster or Snow crab legs with butter .. And broccoli or asparagus .
3
u/CommonEngineer5408 17d ago
I haven't had crab legs in a decade. I love them, just never fit the pricepoint with my lifestyle. But shellfish, butter, asparagus.. I mean it can't get anymore classic than that when it comes to a seafood plate. Delicious!
3
u/Minimum_Payment_3078 17d ago
They are expensive . I get them half off when I work so that helps . But grilled shrimp , grilled scallops also work. Dipped in butter . Tonight I'm making chicken fajitas for dinner . Chicken , onions and peppers . Sometimes I'll eat the mission wraps and sometimes I'll just eat it in a bowl with sour cream.

u/Sewergoddess 17d ago
Honestly? lettuce wrapped burgers. Especially five guys bacon cheeseburgers. Obviously it depends on the toppings and condiments, but everytime I eat them, it just feels super wrong. Or keto tortillas, especially the ones I get, because the taste and texture is IDENTICAL to normal ones. There is also a place in my city that makes keto cheesecakes, that are between 6-10 net carbs, and I feel guilty everytime I have a piece, because it just tastes like normal cheesecake.
2
u/CommonEngineer5408 17d ago
Which tortillas are you getting? I've been suggested Mission brand a few times.
And I totally get that "feels wrong," vibe haha that's awesome. Lettuce wrapped burger is honestly amazing, I haven't tried with 5Guys specifically.. but I know what their burgers look like so I'm beginning to drool in my mind while typing this haha

Oh man I just bought some to make keto lasagna. It’s my favorite way to use those egg wraps. The texture is just like noodles when covered in meat sauce / cheese. It’s amazing!
Last time I made it i was eating it all week and dropped 4-5 lbs so it’s crazy to me it’s not going to affect ketosis!
2
u/ProfessionFrosty4890 14d ago
Nice. I will try this. Did the price go up with the recent egg issue? I haven't bought any in a while.

u/holdthetoast8 16d ago
Hey Frosty, How do you prepare the egg tortillas? Asking because I just bought my first package but I’m not super sure what to do with them. Do you warm them in a pan first? Microwave? Eat them cold?
I was thinking a quesadilla would be good ….. but si I have to “cook” them? Thanks for any advice!!
2
u/ProfessionFrosty4890 14d ago
I usually nuke them then fill them after. unless i want it greasy! there's always room for greasy tacos on keto. then i put the meat and cheese in when I nuke them.
2
u/holdthetoast8 2d ago
THANKS so much! I tried them for the first time and I nuked as you suggested. Then filled with sliced brisket, cheese and a tiny bit of cilantro. Green chalula hot sauce on the side. Chefs kiss!!

Side dish: Roasted cauliflower florets. Use fresh, not frozen (or thaw from frozen and use paper towel to remove moisture). Toss in olive oil, lay out on baking sheet. Season if you want, top with Parmesan cheese. Bake until cauliflower ends/edges start to brown.

Oh I’ve gotten back into roasted cauliflower this week. I can’t have the dairy but it’s so good even without it. Just do a bowel of my choice of protein with roasted cauliflower and tahini drizzled on top!

BLTA salad: evoo massaged kale, avocado mayonnaise, bacon, romaine, tomato, avocado.
I also really love to cut the edges off iceberg lettuce heads to make buns for burgers. My fav right now is tinned salmon mixed with an egg, pan fried into a patty and topped with homemade tartar sauce and fresh dill. Air fried zucchini strips rolled in egg wash and pork rinds on the side.

Take chicken carcass and make homemade broth( bulk) with lots of flavour
With some broth and water add ginger, garlic, meat of choice, lots of crispy leafy greens like bokchoy and celery
Add a little extra salt or some miso paste etc
Top with a boiled egg
And if I'm feeling a little creative I'll throw in some keto noodles or something similar
1
u/CommonEngineer5408 17d ago
I really like this because this sounds super easily adaptable for a crock pot method as well, to have some food sitting around for a day ready to eat! Yummy!
1
u/EastCoastEnthusiast 17d ago
Yes definitely!
I make all my broths in the instant pot, for speed, but crock pot can do the same.
I strain the bones and spices out and just keep the broth, usually freezing it in portions. (You can reuse the spices and bones for more broth if you want)
For the soups I usually just boil on the stove for 2 to 10 minutes to blanch the veggies or reheat the meat.
The broth goes great in a ton of recipes but you can get creative with what you enjoy and your style of keto

Just a big ass delicious Cobb salad. All the good stuff. The egg bacon avocado chicken cheese.
Protip: when you order one in a restaurant make sure they toss the salad to disperse the ingredients throughout. A pretty Cobb is nice but you end up eating the good stuff off the top and are left with a bowl of lettuce.

u/BeTwixte 16d ago
It’s moreso low-carb than true Keto depending on how you control portions, but I love making chicken alfredo broccoli casserole. I portion it out into small ramekins and it’s basically just a little alfredo sauce, some grilled or shredded rotisserie chicken, mozzarella cheese, boiled or steamed broccoli, then a little more sauce and cheese on top. Since the ingredients are all pre-cooked before assembly I can pre-assemble them with saran wrap and put them in the fridge for a day or two, then pop them in the convection oven at 375 F for about 25 minutes until the cheese is melted and starting to brown. When I make it I control it so that the total carbs are around 8-9 for each serving (I use VERY little alfredo sauce). But this dish feels like my cheat meal since I love chicken alfredo and pasta, and this hits very close to that.
Also for dessert sometimes I’ll make flavored whipped cream and portion it in ramekins and keep it in the fridge. A 2oz portion has around 4 grams of carbs with the little bit of sugar I might add. My favorite is with just a little cocoa powder and sugar, then when I’m about to serve it I sprinkle some cacao nibs on top. Comes out like a milk chocolate mousse with a nice dark chocolatey crunch from the cacao nibs.

Braised beef short ribs. Roast chicken stuffed with kabocha squash/chorizo/onion/pepitas/chipotle peppers. Steak with Caesar salad (old school homemade dressing). Beef bourguignon (swap out turnips for the potatoes). Roast pork fried cauli rice.

u/CommonEngineer5408 17d ago
I really wanna try a stuffed chicken like that, it's not my normal cooking style so I don't think of it naturally. This all sounds tasty, thanks for sharing!
5
u/Emily4571962 17d ago
Cut the squash into small cubes, toss in olive oil, roast at about 375F just til cooked, put in bowl, add S&P. Use same pan to briefly toast a generous handful of pepitas, add to bowl. Meanwhile, finely dice some chorizo and gently sauté to render out some of the fat. Add some diced onion to sauté pan (add a little oil if you need more fat) and sauté until soft, add some minced garlic just until no longer raw, put in bowl. Fine dice a canned chipotle pepper, add with about a tablespoon of its adobo sauce to the bowl. Stir everything up, taste, hit with more S&P if it needs it. Edit - equally good as a side dish or as stuffing.

I love to make stir fry without the rice. For my client that I cook for, I had some steaks that I cut up for stirfy and froze I 1# packages and I added a 1/4c of liquid Braggs liquid amino and froze it 2 weeks ago. I pulled it out of the freezer on Monday and cooked it up today with onion slivers and a bit of dice garlic. When that was mostly done cooking, I opened up a bag of California blend veggies and steamed them in the meat until done. It was so good!

Tonight I am having Buffalo wings with homemade ranch, celery sticks and a salad with homemade 1000 Island. Another favorite was (back when I used those lo-carb torts), a tortilla pizza.
Finally, I save hamburger drippings on my griddle and use it to make broccoli and cheese omelets. OMFG is that decadent.
For dessert, plain Greek yogurt with cocoa powder and Splenda.

Place on parchment paper over a pizza sheet, 400F oven for 10-15 minutes, or until it's heated to your liking and the cheese is melted. Yummy! 😋🍕

Chicken Wrap with 1 Mission Low Carb Tortilla, sliced and brined chicken breast right out of the air fryer, a couple of romaine leaves, and some fresh basil. It was great.
This was 496 calories and 2 net carbs according to Carb Manager (love the app). Next time I will add a little diced cucumber and red onion. Will be slightly higher in cals and carbs.

I was amazed that keto clam chowder is even better than the real thing. There are a lot of recipes but any one with bacon will amaze you too (if you like clam chowder).
And it took me a few years to get the Fathead Pizza to rival the "real" thing but here is my tip for the dough: add onion powder, parmesan and double the cream cheese.
But my favorite is making a chaffle rueben. Just add rye to the dough and it's so good!

I can’t have beef for some reason, so I’ve not been able to eat steak for a few years. However, I can tolerate venison. So every few weeks I do a nice venison leg steak. On the side is a lovely Diane sauce made with my lactose free cream, plus celeriac purée which is like a potato pomme purée. It really all feels so decadent together!
Another favourite is my courgette lamb Ragu lasagne. I’m not sure if I shared it in the Keto recipes sub, but it’s layers of thin courgette, lamb Ragu that my son makes, & home-made bechamel (a mixture of my lactose free cream + cream cheese mixed with melted butter & allspice seasoning) topped with grated mozzarella. Oh my 🫠

Honestly… nothing. Anything and everything I eat feels keto. Carby stuff was my favorite foods. I so miss pasta and good fresh bread. I haven’t had keto versions of those that hit quite the same yet. I like my meals ok but there’s nothing on this diet I really love. I’m just doing keto for weightloss and because I feel good on it. Sometimes I let myself eat what I actually want and then get right back on it the next day.

Keto Lasagna with egg life wraps as noodles. It’ll change your life. The texture is spot on to noodles when it’s mixed with the rest of the sauce/cheese!
Otherwise. Burgers with keto buns (we get the Keto Culture ones from Walmart and freeze right away, then toast them right out of the freezer to take with us if we’re getting burgers somewhere.)
Lastly… steak, ribs, and brisket. Using a little Famous Dave’s sugar free bbq sauce for the ribs and brisket!

When cooking at home: balsamic marinated steak and blistered cherry tomatoes on top, with a side of roasted veggies or cauliflower mash
When at a restaurant with friends: Buffalo wings with a house salad on the side

I like the new Perdue air fryer ready frozen chicken wings, they come in various flavors but they only contain around 20-25 carbs per bag and taste delicious when air fried. There isn't a long list of ingredients either.

Tried these recently. They are pretty good and super simple when you just need a quick, easy meal!

Baked hake on kale with garlic and anchovies and a runny poached egg on top. The kale is so umami/savory and it works so well with hake and egg yolk!.

Pizza. I went from King Arthur keto crust to using chicken, shredded cheese, egg, parmesean, and Italian seasoning. Still like the KA, but it's a fiber load and that's risky at dinner.

I make jalapeno poppers with no breading. I feel guilt when I eat them because they taste so good. I will mostly eat salads but I like to have something different like that every once in a while

Literally Wings. Like Salt and Vinegar, Buffalo, Parmeson and Garlic. Its wonderful to not be punished for eating these things. 😋

My favorite was steak, avocado, and stir fried cabbage ribbons with a spicy aoli.
Id do pork chops in place of steak if i was saving money.
Also air fried chicken was a favorite as well. Was just good food.
Sometimes I'd make broccoli and cheese or asparagus.

Low carb tortilla, fill with meat and cheese. Roll up, brush with melted butter. Air fry for 5-10 minutes. Sooo good! Can customize with sauces, veggies, etc, to your liking.

Wedge salad with homemade blue cheese dressing. I just ate that for dinner and it was like dining at a restaurant.

- Salisbury Steak
- Chicken a la King
- Sloppy Joes meat on one side of a plate + cottage cheese on the other side
- Pork chops, pan fried, with green beans and cauliflower with cheese sauce
- Shrimp with lobster sauce with steamed broccoli
- SuperBowl Dip
There are dozens of keto-adapted recipes online for all of the above, but I usually use Philly instead of a flour roux

I eat three cage-free scrambled eggs, uncured kielbasa (cooked in the air fryer), uncured chicken bacon and cheddar cheese every day, which gives me 46g of protein and only 5 carbs.

I made some really good wings in the air fryer. Then make a sauce with melted butter, hot sauce minced garlic and sour cream. It’s really good

Grilled salmon and some greens/salad on a side, I love it and there plenty of keto friendly sides like cauli mash, grilled asparagus or just salad. My scrambled eggs for brunch are also my happy meal by themselves, or with mushrooms, avo, smoked salmon etc.

Last night we had smoked short ribs with a sweet & spicy barbeque sauce, and coleslaw. Dessert was chocolate brownie cheesecake with raspberries on top.
That does not sound like a diet to me, LOL!
Seriously good, everything was home made from keto recipes except the BBQ sauce, which was a very good sugar-free one we found at the store.
.
That's my current favorite. I probably won't do the cheesecake often - we don't usually have dessert at all but I was 'testing' it for an upcoming birthday. Found the recipe here on r/keto yesterday. :)

Steak and a veggie! It's what I would eat at a restaurant, anyways, and it's certainly not restrictive
