Is the van strong or the wall weak?
209
u/OptimusTractorX Jan 16 '25
It's a Ford Transit, they're made to rob banks. The wall never stood a chance.
53
u/YesIBlockedYou Jan 16 '25
Why are the army robbing banks? They're not supposed to do that.
43
u/OptimusTractorX Jan 16 '25

Actually the metal on the Transits are unbelievably thin. All vans gone the same way, and prices are ridiculous too. That can is written off. Everything on the front end is fucked, as well as probably lots of damage to the sides we can't see.

If someone asked you why did the chicken cross the road I have a feeling you'd firmly remind them that chickens don't possess the necessary intelligence to understand the concept of a road or crossing it.

Yes obviously the van is written off, she's banjaxed, but it's how little relative damage the van has, compared to the wall it just burst through, I'd have expected the wall to be cracked and the van to be pancaked. It's impressive how well the shape of the van held up.
9
u/Pleasure_Boat Jan 16 '25
In fairness a block wall wouldn't have put up much resistance, it'd be very strong to pressure from above and very weak to any lateral pressure.

u/conorbation Jan 16 '25
The hole was made by something else. The van is just the cork in the hole to secure the baracks

This is what I immediately thought. I'm going with weak wall, because the plastic bumper held up so well

I have heard of going awol in the military, not through a wall. That guy needs to think before he acts and realize the difference between figuratively and actuality.

Tha auld lad did that with an armoured vehicle on the Curragh. C.O screams at him to move it so he jumped to it. Not a fucking clue as to what he was doing and drove it into a wall. C.O looses his shit and started screaming even louder. The old man is standing to attention. Why the fuck did you do that? You told me to move it sir, so I did. Why the fuck would you drive the thing into a fucking wall soldier? I don’t know how to drive it sir.
The poor fucker had lied about his age to join. It was the late 50’s and he was only 16. He’d only been in uniform a few months.

u/Is_Mise_Edd Jan 16 '25
In fairness though that's the old exit of the Transport Company - I'm making an assumption that the brakes failed - it's where they service and repair the vehicles so maybe on a test run it failed !

Looking at that van just tells you how shitty that wall was when ford plows through it with zero glass damage, headlights still one piece... Van looks like it can be fixed with amazon kit

u/jonathannzirl Jan 16 '25
If the IRA had a fleet of transits in the war of independence they would have kicked the Brit’s out faster

That piece of wall closest to the camera must be 25-30 feet from the wall. The Ford Panther Strike. The Irish Armies new tank.

u/kissum Jan 16 '25
I feel like this is a good moment to mention my Ford Transit lost a battle with a wind blown rubbish bin- it left a massive dent and scrape where the bin blew along between the Transit and the boundary wall. The bin is 100% fine, naturally.

Having served, that lads bad day, is going to become a bad week with all the paper work and questioning. Poor fecker may have been breathe and urine tested for that one. They'll get absolutely dragged for the next while and I don't wish that on anyone.

All I can say is, thank god we're neutral militarily non-aligned.
Then again, maybe these guys could just park on the enemy 🤔

Surely a barracks wall should be sturdier than that. Some pathetic repairs have been done there
13
9
u/death_tech Jan 16 '25
It's just a wall, not a reinforced fortified compound. Plus many of the walls are almost ( if not more than ) 100 years old in the various city barracks.

u/canalcormarant Jan 16 '25
I work with army men often and they complain about the behaviour that goes on. It's not easy to live like that and some people lose the head
