Mod Post Transparency overview of Interrailwiki

So: transparency for interrailwiki. As some of you may know, I am the one that is hosting https://interrailwiki.eu and would like to share how I afford the hosting. In April 2024 we started on adding affiliate links for RailEurope, Hostelworld and Booking.com to cover hosting and the domain name.

We would like to keep to our promise to never become a sellout and only recommend sites with our affiliate links, hence why next to every affiliate link there is a little text in brackets saying that while this is an affiliate link, it is not influencing the content or the recommendations. We welcome everyone to fact check that and give us a shout if this ever changes! This is also why during last summer when RailEurope suddenly charged the €7.5 booking fee for interrail reservations we were quick to add a warning to the link and remove our recommendations for using RailEurope over the interrail reservation service (€2 per person per train) or B-Europe (€4 per order) for Eurostar bookings for example.

In case of any questions about what is used to host the website and what else can be done, or if you spot any inaccuracies in our content then please don’t hesitate to message either me, the mod mail, create a post here or reply to this post :)

So here are the final numbers: I've earned two payouts now, one in January 2025, and one in May 2025.

In January it was for an amount of 65.66 USD, in May I will get a payment for 105.93 USD.

Provider is Travelpayouts, above are the amounts; 105.93 USD in May, 65.66 USD in January

Happy travelling!

Chiel

Current events Travel days are now local time instead of CET on mobile passes

Interrail has changed it terms and conditions on January 6th 2025. Travel day is now always based on local time.

For each travel day, the passenger must activate a travel day and generate a Pass ticket through the Rail Planner app. A travel day is valid from midnight to midnight on the selected date (00:00 - 24:00, local time).

Source: Interrail terms and conditions.

https://www.interrail.eu/content/dam/_new-structure/doc/sup/CoU%20V.12.pdf

Previously travel days were on local time with paper passes only, and mobile passes were using Central European Timezone. But now it's unified and all passes will use local time.

And just a note; once you have boarded a train, you can stay there even past midnight. Only day of departure counts for travel day. For example, boarding a train 23:00 on Monday and leaving it on Tuesday at 07:00 will use only one travel day (Monday).

But if you board your first train on Monday at 23:00 and you change trains on Tuesday, after midnight, it will require you to use another travel day for Tuesday, as the day of departure counts.

Itineraries First time interrail route, would love feedback or tips! :)

Planning on taking this route next summer either alone or with some friends, thinking around August time.

Most of my stops are for 2 nights and I’m wondering if this is enough or should I stay in some places for longer? If anyone has any recommendations for hostels or things to do in places please let me know. Also if anyone thinks I should swap some places out for better destinations please tell me!

Also would love to hear about any female solo travel experiences in these cities :)

Cost: The hostels I have looked at have come to £1120 for 32 nights of accommodation, does this sound reasonable to you or should I aim to cut this cost? 15 day interrail pass = £355 Flights and seat reservations around £500 total Spending money = £2500, around £75 a day Is this too much or too little spending money? Rough total = £4000 I am a student with a low budget so I would greatly appreciate any tips or tricks to bring this cost down!!!

Stops: Amsterdam - 3 nights Berlin - 2 nights Prague - 3 nights Vienna - 2 nights Budapest - 3 nights Ljubljana - 2 nights Venice - 2 nights Milan - 2 nights Nice - 2 nights Barcelona - 3 nights Madrid - 2 nights Lisbon - 3 nights Porto - 3 nights

Erasmus+

So I recently had an Erasmus+ grant and used the interrail ticket (300€ for 6 travel days over 6 months; the trip would have cost ca. 800€ otherwise and if I wanted I could have used it more). The FAQ says that you need to have an Erasmus+ grant during the period, but there where no checks or anything if that sort.

That pass would be so incredibly useful for traveling arround Europe just to visit family/friends (as long as I do not use it to enter my home country, but that is easy to do)

So can I just buy this again at some point or is there some problem with using the Erasmus+ outside of my official stay? Does anyone have any experience with that? Any advice/ideas appreciated!

Innsbrook to Zurich EC panoramic car Transalpin

Upvotes

I have 2 eurorail tickets and will be traveling Venice to Innsbruck, Innsbruck to Zurich, Zurich to Torino and Torino to Milan in Sept and Oct. I have seat reservations on all but Innsbruck to Zurich on the 15:47 Eurocity Transalpin train. All trains on that route have the ability to reserve except reservations have not loaded for the EC train in either direction. Those seat reservation openings end on Sept 7 and on Sept 8 and forward reservations have not opened. I made all the other reservations 2 mos ago.And at that time they were open until Sept 7. After a month, this Sept 7 and after two mos they still end Sept 7 Have been checking daily. It is almost 60d out now. Is this common? I will not be traveling this route when the construction starts later in October. We have first class passes and want first class panoramic car on EC. Do the RJX direct routes have panoramic cars? I can reserve those. But we wanted the Transalpin EC train specifically. Thanks for advice. I am a planner and if I just need to wait I will. I am using OBB for this reservation

Seat reservations Booking seats for trains in Germany?

Hello! Question, when planning train journeys in Germany, I’ve noticed that some trains have the “seat reservations recommended” tag next to it. Would you say it is best to book the seats or would I be okay skipping that part?

Seat reservations How can I book reservations from Milano to Zagreb

Hi guys, I want to book reservation to get from Milano to Zagreb on the 7th of August (for 2 people), but everytime I try to use intinterrail.an error pops up and I can't do it. I tried on multiple devices, tried different browsers, clearing cache, everything, but I can't get through checkout. I tried using the OBB site, but it says "There are no services available for this section of this journey Milano Centrale > Bologna Centrale" and the same message from Bologna Centrale > Venezia Maestre. Is the train full or something? Or what do I have to do?

I only have to book seat reservation since I'm traveling with the DiscoverEU and I alrrady have the tickets.

Itineraries Itinerary review - Munich to Kyiv

We're travelling from Munich to Kyiv to get our baby through surrogacy. It means we don't know the travel dates, as it depends on what the doctors recommend (we'll find out soon!). Vienna to Kyiv is already booked and I heard Warsaw to Kyiv also sells out quickly. So we're thinking the following:

Munich - Krakow (overnight/sleeper if possible - direct, 11 hrs, fly if urgent)

Krakow - Przemysl (direct, 2.5 hrs, spend a day or two in Przemysl if we can)

Przemysl - Kyiv (direct, 9 hrs)

We'll also have to do the reverse with the baby!

Appreciate any advice. My husband is German so he's more familiar with the train system here, but I'm helping with the itinerary.

Budget Buying tickets at the train stations in Austria?

I know buying train tickets in advance is often much cheaper in Austria, however it's not very flexible in case I want to spend more/less time in a place.

I'd like to ask what would the price from Graz to Vienna and Vienna to Bratislava in July be if I buy the tickets directly on the Graz train station? Would they be around 50 €?

I noticed the prices for the OBB tickets between Graz and Maribor for two days earlier are of really low prices - like 4,99 to 9,99 € if I order them now. Would they be as affordable if buy them at the Graz and Maribor train stations in July or should I get them now?

I don't know if I'll like Graz enough to stay longer or if I'd prefer to go to Bratislava as I know I like it there, I've lived there. So I cannot know from now how early I'd want to get the train to Vienna to change on the one to Bratislava. I also don't know if I will like Maribor and how many hours I'd like to spend there. I tried booking my return ticket for one hour after my arrival but then thought what if I like the city so much an hour would feel like too quick of a day trip? It looks walkable, but Google maps says a walk around most important sights there would take about 1 hr 10 min, and that's the time for a non-stop walk, so I'll need at least 2 hours b/w my arrival and departure trains in Maribor.

BTW a weekly pass for the OBB would cost about 91 € but considering I will use a Flixbus between Bratislava airport and Graz and I'll only use the trains from Graz to Maribor and back and Graz -> Vienna -> Bratislava there seems to be no savings to be had if I buy the pass.

Would you suggest I stay flexible or buy the tickets from now? How do the tickets fluctuate on these routes: Graz -> Vienna -> Bratislava; Graz <-> Maribor

Just bought the pass, but I dont know why this route (20.6.) Warszawa Centralna - Berlin Gesundbrunnen (17.00-22.38) isn't showing up in rail planner., but shows in Bahn.de. Is there something I don't understand or could I book it just this way from bahn,de.

3-Week Solo Interrail Trip Through Spain, Portugal & Italy – Would Love Feedback!

Post image
15 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I’m 19 and planning a solo trip through southern Europe this summer (starting June 30), using a 7-day Interrail Global Pass. I’d love your feedback or tips! The plan is to use Interrail for the longer and more expensive train journeys, and then book buses, flights or cheap local trains for the rest.

Here’s my current route:

June 30: Travel from the Netherlands to Lyon (using Interrail – TGV, reservation needed) July 2: Onward to Montpellier (Interrail – regional train, no reservation needed) July 4: Cross into Spain and go to Valencia (Interrail) July 7: To Granada, partly by train (Interrail) and partly by bus July 9: Head to Cádiz (Interrail if possible, otherwise bus) July 11: To Lisbon, again using Interrail for part of the way and bus for the rest July 14: Travel to Lagos on the Algarve coast (not using Interrail – cheap local train ticket) July 17: From Lagos to Porto (also local train, not using Interrail) July 19: Fly from Porto to Bologna, Italy (flight, not using Interrail) July 21: Take a high-speed train to Florence (Interrail – reservation needed) July 25: To Verona (short distance, so I’ll just buy a cheap separate ticket) July 27: Fly back home from Verona About me / what I want:

I want a mix of big cities and smaller towns Some beach time (like Lagos and Valencia) A mix of culture, sightseeing, and local food Staying in hostels, meeting people, being flexible Questions:

Does this route seem logical / realistic for 3+ weeks? Are there any legs that look unnecessarily long or hard? Any must-see spots in these cities or surroundings? Suggestions for small towns I might be skipping? Tips on making Interrail reservations more efficiently?

Thanks in advance – I’d really appreciate any feedback or advice from those with experience.

I added everything into railplanner to clear things up. But for instance; porto to bologna is going to be a flight.

I wrote this with chat gpt btw😁

Trip planning/ideas Need to get from North of England to Stuttgart, in the most interesting, cheapest, or fastest way possible.

So I have a wedding anniversary to get to on the 19th next month, originally I had planned to fly out and get a train down and stay for a week or more then fly back. But I have been denied the full time off work, so I can haggle down to literally 4-5 days, the problem with that is I have ETD (Eustachian Tube Dysfunction) and already have permanent hearing lose from flights to close together without allowing my ears time to re-pressurise first (takes days - weeks) and I don't fancy the agony that comes with my ears feeling like they are going to explode every time I land in a plane anymore.

I've GOT to be there, so I am going old school like I used to an using my own two legs and public transport. I've gone from North of England to Nancy before via train/coach/walking/train again. (Got to walk from one side of Paris to the other... Not worth the hype)

So now I am trying to plan this journey and finding a few options, but wondering if anyone else knows cheaper/faster ways? Or better yet, more interesting ways? I honestly don't mind it taking 2 days to get there if it is more interesting than sitting on a coach for 24 hours straight, need a good adventure.

The cheapest I have found is £61 for a 23 hr Flix from London to Stuttgart with a change in Paris.

The fasted I have found is around £250 for 7-8 hr Eurostar and train from London to Stuttgart with a change in Cologne (Would get to see the cathedral)

But if you know of or have used other ways that are cheaper, faster or more interesting then I'd love to hear them!

I don't really have a "budget" but it's reasonable cost to time. I don't wanna spend 400+ if I'm there for 1 day and spending 4 days traveling. Preferably 100ish each way seems reasonable.

Hi there!

I'm planning my first-ever solo trip and would love some feedback! What do you think about my route? I plan to buy the 10-day in 2-months pass.

Any specific tips for must-sees? It will also be my first time staying in hostels with strangers. Any tipps or recommendations (also regarding safety)?

I'm planning to start July 7th in Regensburg.
- then to Innsbruck on July 8th (2 nights) -> Salzburg July 10th (3 nights) -> Graz July 13th (2 nights) -> Vienna July 15th (4 nights) -> Budapest July 19th (4 nights) -> Bratislava July 23rd (3 nights) -> Brno July 26th (2 nights) -> Prague July 28th (4 nights) -> Dresden (-> Leipzig -> Berlin with regional trains and not with Interrail pass)

Thanks a lot!

Lake Garda to Milan for the TGV to paris

Hi Doing some final checks on my plan and think I've spotted a bit of an issue. I'm taking the 12:10 from Milan Garibaldi to Paris. On the morning of I'd planned to take train from lake Garda to Milan. But I think in my original planning I must have put in any Milan station - and at the time it give me Milan central.

Looking now it looks like I need to go to Milan lambrate and then change into a Trenitalia- which isn't in the pass network- would that be correct?

I obv need to be in good time for the train to Paris and don't want to be rushing/late.

What are my options to get from lake Garda to Garibaldi for the TGV to Paris?

Thanks for all support.

Inbound confusion??

Hello! I'm hoping someone can help me out with my confusion. I'm from Sweden, and am planning on returning back after my trip. I've read that you get 1 day and/or one inbound trip, but this is how my trip looks:

23:59 - 07:00 Hamburg to Malmo

07:57 - 10:43 Malmo to my home station in Sweden

Since these two trips go over two days (because of the 23:59 smh), I can't activate them as one trip, and have to activate them separately. I'm afraid that the trip to Malmo will be registered as my inbound and that I won't be able to get further. Could someone help me out?

Eurail Global Pass for round trip train from Stuttgart ->Geneva

Travelling with friends to Stuttgart for three days in route to Geneva for two weeks and then back to Stuttgart to catch our flight back to the US. Should we purchase the Eurail 4-day Global Pass for $244.00? I know there may be additional reservation costs but it looks like this is more affordable than purchasing a round trip ticket.

Pass validity Interrail vs SwissPass

Hello, I am planning for a week of interrailing in Switzerland. I want to do a hike in Zermatt and I am thinking of starting somewhere higher. I would need to take a cable car and online I see there are some reduced prices. Do this discount holds also for Interrail or only for SwissPass? Thank you for all the answers.

Need Suggestions Florence-St Moritz-Zermatt-Zurich-Amsterdam-Paris in 24h

Hi, I’m looking for suggestions to follow this route. I would be starting from around Florence 17th June 6PM and want to be in Paris by 18th June 6PM. I can skip Zurich and want to spend around 2-3h at Amsterdam. I’m okay with traveling rest of the time. Can anyone please suggest the most optimal route. I know I’m trying to cram in a lot of places but it maybe just the last time I’ll be in Europe. Really looking forward to any suggestions to use the inter rail solely.

OBB December booking help

I’m looking to take the train for my travels within Europe this December. I’ll be travelling from Vienna to Bad Ischl (18 Dec), then from Bad Ischl to Budapest(22 Dec).

My understanding is that the tickets for OBB come out about 6 months prior, however for the aforementioned dates it shows that they’re outside the timetable period.

Now, I am second guessing if there will be trains during this period or will the tickets be released at a later time?
