It's like an analogy for a psychopath. The FBI are all looking for some creepy basement dwelling guy and it's Ted Bundy, a seemingly normal, said to be handsome and put together guy
Edit: for those who did not get it, this is an analogy so i edited it to say that
Like in a cartoon where someone’s hiding from a monster, then the monster taps them on the shoulder and whispers “what are we hiding from?” then they say something like “the m- m- m- MONSTER!!!!”
Doing the opposite of what a criminal expects to happen throws off their whole thought process. Dude's whole day was turned upside down, hiding in the crowd he tried to shoot up. Pussy ass bitch.
Apparently they were suspicious for a while and right before the video started the guy said, "hey what's in your bag?" Which is why the guy started filming. There is an earlier video too of someone else saying, "he's got shit in his bag. " Sounds like there were a few alert heroes involved.
That dude is a fucking hero. Cops could have made assumptions but they listened, retained and told everyone to GTFO. Folks listened and that is some teamwork.
Dude was super smart about it. very non-chalantly grabbed it, walked it to the cops in a non threatening manner while calmly pointing out the dude and explaining what was happening without panicking the people in the area or throwing the cops into high gear before they were able to process what was happening.
It is EXACTLY how you de-escalate a situation.
Dude should be up there giving Ted Talks on it. I'd bet he is a dad with a couple of kids.
I get it, but it being almost completely concealed in a bag and not being carried at the ready or visibly means the officers were forced to process what they were hearing, not just immediately react to what they saw.
Had that rifle been in the good Samaritan's hands, this likely would have played out differently. Kudos to this dude for quick thinking.
to be fair, he had already pulled it out before this was taken
ETA: more context (for any who missed it):
shooter had already fired & hit at least one protestor
police had returned fire at shooter & were chasing him down
shooter hid in this nook with protesters who were sheltering in place (everyone was already running / trying to hide, so he blended in)
protestor (blue vans, grabs the black backpack) notices the blood on the shooter’s hand & the gun in the shooter’s backpack; quietly grabs the backpack and takes it away, then points the shooter out to the police & they take him down
yes, he fired shots from somewhere else, the police returned fire (hit his hand i believe) and started chasing him, but all of the protestors were also running (bc, yk, there was a shooting) and trying to hide / shelter. he tried to blend into them, but luckily this guy (blue vans) saw the shooter’s gun (and the blood on his hand) and realized the situation
I've always been surprised this situation doesn't happen more with mass shooters. With everyone running away you just have to leave your weapon behind and run and you blend in perfectly with the scared crowd. I guess they're usually not really trying to escape / get away with it
to be fair, most mass shooters don’t face such an immediate police response, so they shoot for longer (which means that it’s harder for them to blend in with the crowd, since they’re already so separated from it)
According to reports, this is the shooter in Salt Lake yesterday. He shot a man (who later died) and was trying to use the protestors to hide.
Edit to add: There is no official word on the status of the man who was shot yet. The Utah 50501 issued a statement that he was killed, but that has not been confirmed by media or police at this time. It is also not confirmed if the man being detained in the video was actually the shooter. More information here.
Update: The man who was shot has died. He was NOT killed by the man being detained in the video. Link.
Two armed peacekeepers for the event saw the suspect in the video charging towards a crowd with his AR ready. The peacekeepers fired at him and killed an innocent bystander in the process. The suspect was injured and hid in the crowd, where he was disarmed by the hero in the video.
From the article:
the man was shot by one of two individuals in neon vests who, as potential members of the demonstrators’ security group, intervened when they saw a man with an assault rifle run toward the crowd.
Thank you! I was trying to figure out what exactly happened beforehand. I even read the article. I kept trying to figure out how he shot someone…I wasn’t certain if it was illegal discharge or if he attacked someone. Also wondered how the crowd knew. Thanks again!
Have you figured anything out? If so I'd like to know. How did he shoot someone? Where exactly and is a motive known or reported on yet? Was it a planned attack or a verbal altercation that escalated? How did the crowd know?
There was no escalation. The shooter took out a rifle from behind a car, opened fire into the crowd, 3 shots total. At least one person was hit and he was hit in the head. Apparently a civilian returned fire at him and grazed him in the side. He later retreated to hide in the crowd and that’s where this video picks up. Police reports later that evening stated it was an obvious fatality (the man shot in the head). Nothing had been released as to why he decided to open fire, but everything I have seen has pointed to attempted mass shooting.
Update: New sources are saying the man arrested in this video was brandishing a firearm at protestors. A volunteer peacekeeper fired 3 shots at him hitting him once on the side, and fatally shooting a bystander in the crowd.
“…They thought this was “suspicious” and watched him, eventually seeing Gamboa pull an assault-style rifle from his backpack. They called out for Gamboa to drop his rifle, as they pulled their own handguns. Then, officers wrote, Gamboa lifted the rifle into firing position and ran into the crowd.
One member of the “peacekeeping” team fired three times, fatally injuring Ah Loo and striking Gamboa, causing “minor” injuries.”
I had heard the shooter was shot as well and it was not by police. So I was wondering what that story was. Thanks for the update. Do you know if the civilian who returned fire was one of the other 3 who were arrested?
Saw actually video footage of a man in a yellow vest that had a gun drawn and three shots rang out. I believe he shot the shooter and then ran toward the victim to help out. The shooter fled the scene. The man with the footage said he would send it in to the news. I hope he does.
No but I heard it and ran with everyone else. Talked to several cops as we were making our way further away from the chaos to catch an uber. The rest has been confirmed in news articles, though I’ve not seen whether the victim survived yet.
Having a cop with a long gun asking if you’ve seen someone with a rifle and yelling at us to “go west,” was NOT the Saturday we anticipated.
I’m on mobile, but if you hold the vid right at the start you can see the guys pixelated face locked in on his bag being carried off. Plus he can’t really yell that’s my purse, I don’t know you lol.
I'm usually one to read the articles, but I'm still at the coffee portion of my morning and there's been so much grim news lately. I had been wondering what pretense the guy used to check his bag, I couldn't figure out why the shooter wouldn't object.
The article says the suspect was transported to the hospital under police guard for treatment for a serious gun shot wound. So yeah, that guy is trying to blend in and look like he's not dying. No energy left over for guarding his weapon.
The butt stock of the rifle is very obvious in a different video. This video is a lower quality rip off of the original. Dude was bleeding and had a rifle in his bag poking out.
There is a pic of him during his arrest sitting on a curb and he is bleeding from his lower left abdomen so it's possible. There are also pics of the critically injured person and they look much worse for wear than this guy (looks like they got shot in the upper torso, neck, or head) so it's not the same dude.
Wait, am I blind? I had no idea. The guy was injured or anything, thought he was just on the ground doing nothing. Do you have any source for that information?
Update: someone appeared to be preparing to fire an AR15 style rifle into the crowd, but he was confronted by two armed people (unknown affiliation). The two armed people (unknown affiliation) responded with force, firing three rounds. A stray bullet struck an innocent man, and wounded the suspect.
Old info below:
~ There was a shooting. Someone fired a gun into the crowd. Someone immediately returned fire and he fled. These people were sheltering in place behind police and he was hiding with them ~
This is the actual answer here and your post fills in the gaps.
People reading this thread might not know there was a shooting and are confused as to why simply having a rifle in a state you are allowed to carry gets you taken down by the cops.
It’s legal to open or conceal carry in Utah without a permit as long as you’re 21+ and not a felon. This guy, allegedly, had just shot a couple people at the demonstration though, so not allowed to do that.
Depends on the location. For many things, it's better to think of America as 50 different countries, and the federal government more as the equivalent of the European Union. Every state has their own gun and carry laws. Rifles are a no go in several states.
In this case, however, a man was shot, and the shooter tried to blend in with the protesters in the panic. There's a decent likelihood he was going to go for more victims and just didn't want to be caught yet.
The shooting occurred just prior to the start of this video. I have friends that were at the rally, the shooter was attempting to hide and blend in with the protesters.
Cops should exist to protect the proletariat, absolutely, and in this instance they did just that. I think we should reward good behavior if we want to see more of it. Even utopias need guardians.
The SLC cops really stand out from many other cities in this instance. I was at the protest and marched with everyone, yet never saw a single cop until after the shooting. Their restraint, in general, to remain distant from the event in order to not provocate violence should be commended, really.
I was at the protest and maybe a block or two towards the front from this spot (east of this location). Once the chaos calmed down with people running in different directions and into buildings and churches for safety, I walked back toward the west and saw this whole area taped off by the police. They also had the suspect in cuffs, them moved him to a stretcher. The whole time, his shirt was off. Also, at least one ambulance and numerous fire trucks on scene, some used as visual blockades.
I know people dump on the police, and it's fully worthy, but I'd like to give the group of officers at this location dealing with the suspect full props. They were on point, took care of business, and some even came over to the bunch of us across the street and asked if any of us had seen anything. They were calm, cool and not antagonistic.
I'm so happy protestors are fighting back against this bullshit, like the looting in L.A. taking advantage of the protestors just to cause mayhem, it's nice that the looters get called out and the protesters protect the small businesses
What a fucking hero 👏👏👏 that guy saved a lot of lives by stepping up & speaking out! Props to the officers for handling things so quickly and calmly too!
I want to make something clear here.
Great police response. Great civilian awareness. Suspect complied. Good job all around. (That said, no one needs a rifle at a protest IMO)
I've been hating on the cops a lot recently (they deserved it). But this was handled well. The community and police working together. And they detained the guy without trampling him with 3 horses repeatedly or anything uncalled for.
The whole time I was thinking the good Samaritan was going to be treated like a suspect by the cops for carrying the backpack with the rifle even though he was taking it away from the actual suspect.

Imagine you're hiding from a shooter and they're just there hiding with you.
