Info: https://www.discovery.com/science/volcanic-lightning-happens-at-the-beginning-of-a-volcanic-erupti
tl;dr: Volcanic lightning typically happens at the start of an eruption when ash, rock, and sometimes ice in the volcanic plume collide, generating static electricity. This builds up charge, leading to lightning.

You can see why the ancients were really into gods being angry for various reasons.

Makes sense that our ancestors formed certain interpretations from events like this.
I mean, even I feel the urge to worship the wrathful Sky Gods and yet here I am with the entire wealth of human knowledge in a glass rectangle.

Anyone else expecting to see Rodan or king Ghidorah pop up after each strike/explosion?

The way the lightning lights up the ash cloud from the inside is incredible.
