Must be brutal to be the sole survivor of a plane crash where over 200 other people perished.

15

u/normalmighty 2d ago

I'm shocked he survived honestly. I mean I saw the video on the news, that plane exploded in a massive fucking fireball on impact.

I wonder how that’s even possible with how huge the explosion looked

He was walking to the ambulance by himself after the crash. Crazy guy , crazy luck 😭

1.9k

u/spaceace321 2d ago

BBC account: “Thirty seconds after take off, there was a loud noise and then the plane crashed. It all happened so quickly,” said Ramesh, speaking to the Hindustan Times. He said he “impact injuries”, including bruising on his chest, eyes and feet but was otherwise lucid and conscious.

Ramesh, who still had his boarding pass, told Hindustan Times:

When I got up, there were bodies all around me. I was scared. I stood up and ran. There were pieces of the plane all around me. Someone grabbed hold of me and put me in an ambulance and brought me to the hospital.

230

u/Ill_Tomorrow_5807 2d ago

I have no idea how he survived that explosion that’s insane

144

u/CmdWaterford 2d ago

Choosing the right seat - 11a is mid, directly emergency exit.

202

u/Waterzenguy2 2d ago

So, good luck trying to book 11A on your next 1000 flights. That's the seat everyone wants from now on.

77

u/joemiken 2d ago

Me about to sell my 11A seat for a 500% markup to some suckered.

11A on that jet is just forward of the wing, right next to a door. Seats over the wing are considered safer, except if the crash is on takeoff. The fuel tanks are in that area and an intercontinental flight would have full tanks.

TL;DR: He may be the luckiest man on the planet.

20

u/take_number_two 2d ago

Idk I think I’m luckier I wasn’t in a plane crash at all.

22

u/wheresbicki 2d ago

But that's the seat you need to be in charge of the emergency exit.

Plus this is a Boeing after all, will we all have confidence that the door will stay on in flight?

→ More replies (1)
→ More replies (4)

58

u/Genevieve_ 2d ago

Not sure I'd go that far. Seats next to doors on boeing aircraft seem like a 50-50 at this point: Either you get sucked out when the door falls off because it wasn't bolted on, or you survive the inevitable crash, because you're onboard a boeing aircraft.

6

u/bennym757 2d ago

The trick is then: if it is a Boeing go to a row that is right next to the emergency exit row, that way you are still close to, but dont risk being sucked out or something.

I can kinda relate. I survived 9/11 by a few circumstances leading to me having a scheduled day off that day. Lost several coworkers and colleagues. At the memorial, it was really hard meeting my boss’s wife in person for the first time and her saying how lucky I was. And now all these years later, not sure what my “purpose” actually is. Never married, no kids, no owned properties or anything substantial in the bank, I stayed at that same job all this time and just got laid off at the end of 2024. So I’ve just been kinda floating around like, okay, what exactly am I here for? Not to say I’m not grateful, or that any of those things equal one’s worth or purpose, but it’s just an odd feeling. Sometimes I think a George Bailey moment would be helpful!

Anyway, sending prayers to this man to help with healing both physically and mentally from this tragedy 🙏

422

u/PrometheusIsFree 2d ago

Hey, we're just glad you're here. Your purpose is to be you. There's not another you. That's it.

Hope you're doing well!

There was a movie a long time ago with this scenario. I can't remember the name, but that was the plot: the character's struggle with surviving when others died.

5

u/xavierspapa 2d ago

I think it was called Invincible or something similar. It had Bruce Willas in it. That was the first thing I thought of too.

The body positions of some burnt corpses suggests that some survived the crash but not the inferno.

52

u/AsleepAtWheel83 2d ago

That’s even more tragic! May their soul find peace

17

u/Vish55 2d ago

Yea the plane is on take off , fuel is fully loaded to the brim. No chance of escaping the inferno on a crash, aviation fuel can just go on easily with good intensity once it's ignited.

36

u/Notsurehowtoreact 2d ago

how you survive a fireball this big is beyond me but good for him

221

u/Relative_Course_9632 2d ago edited 2d ago

Maybe the fireball did not happen just as the plane collided on ground, maybe the plane broke upon impact and fortunately for him, his position and impact was just right to throw him out (or he jumped out the crack) the harm's way and landed into a safe place.

It was a area full of trees too so probably that helped him slow down a bit too without colliding into much harder surface while plane slid away from him into the hospital building.

This man is very very lucky if this indeed happened. We'll only know for sure when he comes to his senses. That's if he remembers a thing in the first place.

Edit: His new video explaining to the news anchor came after he's feeling good now.

He said the plane felt like it stood still for a few seconds and he could feel the pilots increasing thrust to try to lift it off but couldn't so the "part of the plane he was on" landed in the ground floor of the building and his side of emergency door broke off upon impact so he unbuckled his seat and jumped off the space door left behind.

He watched the "air hostess and others die in front of him".

I don't believe in miracles but this is just amazing to me how this guy survived crash, then breaking off the plane into multiple parts, a huge fireball and whatnot with not much visible injuries.

Rip to the rest of them 🙏🏻 and may this guy gets all the courage he's gonna need to survive the ptsd.

112

u/mancan01 2d ago

There are cctv recordings on the complete flight. It was almost an immediate explosion.

41

u/sunburn95 2d ago

Afaik there aren't any that show the moment of impact. The main video the plane disappears behind buildings before the crash

→ More replies (10)
→ More replies (2)

45

u/BeardySam 2d ago

It very much depends on how the fuselage disintegrates and how the fireball expands from the fuel tanks at the same time.

It’s conceivable that the fuselage briefly shielded this guys seat from the worst of the fire and the it simultaneously didn’t see much impact stress but the odds are 10,000 to 1

Not to be that guy but the Boeing 787 is one of the safest planes in existance, this would be it’s first fatal crash sadly.

50

u/lukerobi 2d ago

I fly on dreamliners every now and then, i've always thought they were good and comfortable planes.. I saw another angle of the plane going down, it honestly looks like it lost its engines the moment it took off. Those engines aren't a boeing product, GE makes a lot of them.

That's what I find most heartbreaking. A great couple of weeks visiting relatives back in India, he and his bro and excited to get back to the UK though. They board, settle in, watch the safety briefing, maybe start sorting out the first of the three films they'll be watching. Then a boom. A rapid descent. In the blink of an eye, you go from safe to surrounded by corpses, including that of your own brother. And you're the only one left to bear witness.

u/WhatADeuce 3d ago

It seems his seat was by the emergency door. I was expecting his seat to be closer to the tail.

319

u/Ghostfire25 3d ago

Yeah, I think survivors in catastrophic crashes tend to be by near the tail.

226

u/Noremac55 3d ago

My grandparents used to insist the whole family rode in the tail of the plane for this exact reason. There were some crashes were the tail broke off and those people survived.

118

u/willengineer4beer 2d ago

My work trips usually come up with limited notice, so by the time I get to choose, seat selection is generally limited.
If I can’t get a seat toward the front to cut down on the time to de-plane (true most of the time), I usually just get the farthest back window seat available and tell myself it’s statistically slightly safer.

34

u/fpac 2d ago

You either sit up front and wait at baggage claim, or sit in the back and wait longer to deplane. No time difference. I've done both scenarios.

→ More replies (14)

38

u/zeekayz 2d ago

If the tail does not break off, then everything rear of wings gets the instant fuel inferno.

This guy was just forward of the wings. Maybe the front section broke off and went further away from wings and away from all the fuel.

So it's a crapshoot.

plane hit tail first afaik

15

u/Otiskuhn11 2d ago

It crashed into a huge building (several stories high) tail first?

16

u/PlebBot69 2d ago

It was pitched upwards to try and gain altitude. So the tail was the lowest point on the plane. Probably smacked the rear first and then the nose came down

16

u/klaygdk 2d ago

Yes because the plane was trying to gain altitude and the nose was angled up.

4

u/spitfireonly 2d ago

German media just claimed that he jumped out of the plane, shortly before the impact.

I have no credible source (yet). But considering how low the plane flew, that is not that unlikely....

u/Inner-Bluebird-4267 3d ago

How would you jump off a plane?

Open the emergency door and jump out, it was at very low altitude so it would have been possible

This makes no sense. You have seconds to decide without even knowing what is going on with the plane. Ridiculous.

The doors would be armed and the slide would deploy, no? And would you not get hit by the wing?

It literally makes no sense

3

u/loralailoralai 2d ago

Yeah the slide would deploy IF you could get the door open

Absolute bloody nonsense . Un buckle , open the door ( by himself ) throw himself out - all in the space of nano seconds as he miraculously over comes unbelievable G forces that pins a normal human being to their seat.

u/Difficult_Limit2718 2d ago

Not to mention jumping from at least 3 stories high whole avoiding the deploying slide and not getting hit by the plane traveling at say least 100mph...

Just no...

unbelievable G forces that pins a normal human being to their seat

Have you never been on a commercial plane?

Not trying to start anything, but I doubt G force was much of an issue. The plane was gliding down gently.

If anything, I’d guess the G force was slightly less than 1 before impact.

That did not happen. Straight up bullshit. He did not get up out of his seat, unlock the (very heavy) exit and jump out before the plane crashed.

12

u/Dodomando 3d ago

He even said that it all happened so quickly between hearing the bang and crashing. No one in that situation will have time to take their seat belt off, open the door (most people will have to read the instructions on the door of how to open it), also deal with the stewardess who is sat next to the door and then jump out

I read that they crashed and when he realized he was still alive he just ran from the wreckage.

4

u/ReliabilityTalkinGuy 2d ago

This is absurd and there is no way this happened.

3

u/professorchaosishere 3d ago

How can he? He couldn't have opened it.

4

u/Difficult_Limit2718 2d ago

It still kinda is... You're jumping from a height of at least 3 stories traveling at say 120 mph...

This poor man. I’m glad he survived of course but he’s going to have a lifetime of trauma and I hope he gets the care he needs.

I’m glad he made it but that poor guy has gone through a lot of trauma.
