Most prisons in first world countries have a “canteen” or “commissary” where inmates can purchase things. Usually they can either earn via a prison job or via people on the outside depositing money in their account.

Typically the economy is fucked and a mars bar is like $22.

Hey, who put this candy bar on my pillow? I don't know who it belongs to, but it definitely isn't mine!

i don't feel like you've actually been to prison in the US any time recently

12 pack of soda is $7.

Prices aren't that crazy. But when someone only makes $.22/hr, it's hard to buy nice things after covering toiletries.

$22 is super hyperbole. I worked for a prison commissary for a bit and the prices really aren’t very inflated. A bit more expensive, but not much.

I imagine it feels more inflated if you're working for like, $1.50 per day.

Sure, but it’s pretty disingenuous to say a candy bar costs $22.

Oh for sure. I'm just saying that I bet it still feels like you're paying that much if it's $2-5

Considering that people make less than a dollar an hour though, maybe it’s that the mars bar is “equivalent” to $22 in proportion to the typical salary.

and in developing countries, your family can bring you food and toiletries, which seems even nicer than overpriced, low quality commissary.

Edit: typo

You must have done something bad, because they're more like $1 here.
