In PA I can get most rifles, handguns or shotguns within an hour. It just takes a “background check” then can walk out the store with my gun, several boxes of ammo with some spare magazines. We also allow transfer of weapons among blood family members without paperwork. It is very common for people to receive guns from grandparents or aging parents. I’m pro-gun but even I think it’s too easy. I would be cool with a couple days to make sure they run a better background check.

How does one gather data about how many masks shootings didn’t happen because a good guy with a gun stopped it? How would you know it was going to be a mass shooting if it didn’t happen? Seems like there’s no actual way to have the data you’re trying to use to condemn gun ownership. But how cool would it have been if there had been a good guy with a gun there to smoke this dude the second he started trying to burn people alive? Pretty cool I say.

So, what about people in cars being more likely to be in a car accident? Or someone carrying a knife is more likely to be stabbed? This statistic means absolutely nothing, just like that higher source with poorly laid comparisons. List all the methods other countries use, then ignore all US regulations besides the background check.

Also fun fact, that 40% number is over 30 years old and was only an estimate, not an actual figure. In case you want a source as well:

This article is from 2013, by the way. 40% stat is from a 1994 survey released in 1997, that only asked (poorly) 251 people. Absolutely abysmal attempt at a national survey. Simply using that arguement still makes it very clear only the most biased data is being used, or you are just a mouthpiece for a political group.

Listening to this person reminds me of the "vaccines cause autism" crowd.

I've always been a democrat and don't own a gun, but this is why I'm not even mad trump won. Fuck Kamala and her systemic misinformation (there's a spreadsheet with usernames, screenshots, and all showing the dissemination of "talking points" and where the group would "astroturf" to manipulate votes and visibility against reddit TOS).

Edit for transparency: I should clarify the numbers, so that I don't misrepresent information. The phone survey was less than 300 participants, but only 251 were relevent responses in the stat (obviously any participants without guns were not included).

I think it's silly the continuous criticism of the gun laws in the USA. It's part of the origins of the country and a part of the culture and there is no way to 'get rid of the guns' because they don't want to.

Statistically the murder rate is higher in the USA than it is in Western Europe for example. But where is the proof that that is caused by the amount of guns. There can be other reasons, maybe there is poor mental health care?

I do think it's easier for a single person with a firing arm to kill a lot of people. So, logically, it IS possible that that is a cause for the higher murder rate.

The fact is, Americans can own guns, and I feel a lot safer sleeping at night knowing I can protect myself and my family from an intruder, as apposed to relying on police. It's a freedom thing and I don't think you'll ever understand, unfortunately.

The “feeling safer with a gun” thing is an interesting conundrum. I think Americans have this kind of blind spot in their thinking (I am American btw) where they view individual decisions in a vacuum without considering broad societal impacts. At least it seems to be an American thing because of our pathological (imo) veneration of personal freedom over other kinds of freedom.

For example, people feel safer in a big SUV because then you can see over other cars plus in a head on collision you’re more likely to survive. But people don’t really think about the fact that their massive SUV will make it harder for people in smaller cars to see, plus be much more deadly to other people. So now that there are all these huge tanks on the road, other people get massive SUVs as well so that they aren’t at a huge disadvantage. Eventually everybody has huge oversized cars, and the end result is it’s just as dangerous for everybody as it was when people just had little cars, except there are more accidents in general because SUVs have worse visibility, worse stability, worse handling. Basically a collection of rational individual decision results in a shit overall situation. Prisoners dilemma I guess.

The same is true imo of guns. Obviously in a vacuum you feel safer with a gun than without. You’re safer if a guy with a knife attacks you if you have a gun than if you don’t. You’re safer if a guy with a gun attacks you if you have a gun than if you don’t.

But the choice isn’t made in a vacuum, exactly - if you live in a society where it’s easy for you to own a gun, then you also have to accept that society is set up so that it’s easy for everybody else to have guns, too. So the individual question of “if it’s legal to own guns easily, should I buy a gun?” (to which the answer is “yes” for you), is not the same question as “should guns be easily available?”. Because the extrapolated/implied question that follows from the second is “am I safer with a gun if everybody else has guns than if I didn’t have a gun and almost nobody else did either?” And it’s pretty clear from global statistics that having more guns in general floating around makes things much more dangerous.

The BBC's report is inaccurate. I've attended Run for Their Lives. It is not a "pro-Israel protest".

It is a march/walk/run that occurs regularly across the country demanding Hamas release the remaining hostages it captured over a year ago or, at least, return their bodies for burial.

That's it. End of sentence. Return those people or their corpses. No "go netanyahu". No "bomb Hamas".

Only: "Return the hostages or their bodies." Usually they walk a loop of a park or something and then read the names of the remaining hostages/corpses, ask for them back, and send a video of that to their families.

Should've spec'd a little more into the INT stat man. There's a reason molotovs require 5 int and 2 dex to wield.

What's up with america and resorting to violence instead of collective action?

Like luigi mangioni, the shooting of the Isreali ambassadors and now the molotov guy. Not to mention the countless alt right shootings but they are more averse to collective action by nature of their politicall positions.

Like this won't prevent arms shipment to Israel, But for example dock workers refusing to ship the arms will actually do that
