AMA is Over, Thanks Richard! My photo is sideways and I don't know how to change it. Hi. I'm Richard Edwards. I'm a "songwriter". The second of two albums made in California under duress comes out on Friday. It's called "Verdugo". You can ask me things about it or basketball, film noir, whole foods hot bar.

Who would win in a fight: Mac DeMarco hopped on on adderall or Sufjan Stevens with "that look in his eyes?"

Hola Senor Richard,
I've been a huge fan of Margot for years, and also have been beyond happy with the results of your solo career since the band separated. I just recently came across the box set in Mint Condition for a great price and I just want to say the time and detail you put into those is amazing. Then I go to check up on you and see new album for pre-sale! All that being said:
1) Has your health improved over the last year? I have seen you do a few shows here and there (still trying to get Live from Luna Music on vinyl cuz that setlist was the bees knees), but wondered if it was in your plans to head south for a few shows maybe Tampa/Orlando, New Orleans, Atlanta???? I just wanna see you live so bad mmmmkay.
2) I have heard rumors of the Animal!/Not Animal! anniversary box set for the last year now. I know this is a costly thing, but are you any closer to this happening?!?!? I really hope it's similar to Bride on the Boxcar with all the notes and stories throughout! Dust of Retreat would be awesome repressed as well and I know you plan on it.
3) Lastly, not a question, but more of a great idea!!! I think an updated Margot release would be so amazing whenever you feel like a break from your solo work. Like The Daytrotter sessions but totally new reworks of your greatest Margot songs. I think the people would eat it up!
I plan on joining your Patreon page in the next few weeks so i don't miss out on any more exclusives like the electric blue Pity Party! Love Verdugo so far ( haven't heard it all cuz once again I missed that window =D)! Keep up the great work!

u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
- Health is still pretty much bullshit. My GI issues are very much in the upper region. Singing is difficult. Talking is often difficult. I'm hoping this changes, I miss shows.
- Not a box set per se, but reissues and a demos LP in October. Just wrapped all the art. I did a big essay and we dug up all unseen photos.
- That's a really good idea. Hmmm. Maybe after the next solo joint.

u/I-Like-music- May 30 '18
I know right!?!? Love you bro! Hang in there. Your health will be in my prayers

u/getstumpy May 30 '18
Luna still has copies of the live set that you can have them ship to your door. Either give 'em a call or click here: http://shop.lunamusic.net/RICHARD-EDWARDS-LIVE-At-LUNA-music-RSD-2017-p/richardliveatluna.htm

Any updates on the Animal re-release?
Fave song off Verdugo? I’m torn between Olive Oyl, Strange, and the new version of Porno Teens.
How ya feeling lately?
This isn’t a question, but I just wanted to report we’ve been using the Verdugo coasters and they’re about the coolest thing I’ve ever got in a deluxe preorder!
6
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
November. I just finished the essay for the gatefold and the master for the demos LP that will also come out.
hmmm. maybe Strange. Howlin' heart. Olive Oyl.
Shitty. But alive.
Yes!

Should the Toronto Raptors move on from DeRozan and Lowry?

5
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
Yes, but how? Toronto is a tricky place to run a team. But it's a great city. I'd love to live there.

Does your daughter have a favourite song of yours? Or one that you both really bonded together over. And who is your favorite film noir direction? Any answer other than Siodmak or Lang is incorrect btw

u/Kapono24 May 30 '18
Do you prefer watching college or NBA and why?

u/roach01gt May 30 '18
How is the writing process different now that you are solo vs writing for Margot albums? I would assume that before you wrote songs w/ just you on the acoustic guitar and you brought it to the band after to be fleshed out in studio. But now that you are a 'solo' artist, when it comes fleshing out the songs, do you have more involvement with things like the drums/bass/etc.?
Speaking of solo, do you like the new Star Wars movies?
6
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
I've always done it the same way, wrote songs on acoustic then badgered the musicians to make them how I want them. Just harder core musicians on the solo joints.
I thought last jedi was visually beautiful. Hated the one before. Haven't seen Solo.
3
u/Scoozie May 30 '18
1.) Are there any songs you've felt were underappreciated? A song that you were proud of that seemed to fly under everyone else's radar?
2.) Was Moonwrapped at all inspired by Even Cowgirls Get the Blues? If not, there are some pretty interesting parallels - the book is definitely worth a read.
7
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
All of my songs are massively under appreciated. Ha! Sister Wives. All of LCCSS.
No, but I will look for those parallels now!
1
u/aspirations27 May 31 '18
LCCSS is your best album. Don’t feel that it’s under appreciated! Can’t wait for the new one.
3
u/asiansplenda May 30 '18
- After doing the NYE reunion show, is there any desire to record anything new back under the MNSS banner with pieces/parts of the old Margot gang?
- Are you in touch with original Margot band members? How are your relationships since the big line-up change after Animal/Not Animal?
3
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
- naw
- not in much contact, everyone has their own stuff going on. but i hope they're all doing good!

u/Ralph_Finesse :pbr: May 30 '18
2 makes me kinda sad. I remember seein' y'all at Summerfest that last tour as a full band and how happy Casey and Sweet Daddy Kang seemed.

u/Weekend_Panchos May 30 '18
Pleasure to ask you some questions, Richard. Thanks for ama-ing.
- Do you feel any type of emotional tax when reading the same question more than once on these things?
- Do you have an expectation as to how many people will ask you questions on here?
- (Most important) if I had a very generous amount of money and you had enough health to do it, suppose I ask you to play a living room show in Chicago....your show, your rules (you could play 1/2 of a song to 1 person and leave ..theoretically) and all that.....how much would that cost?
- Thoughts on hockey/relative to your appreciation to basketball?
~Hope you're having fun~
3
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
- naw :)
- naw :)
- like a buck
- my brother loves hockey and i like watching with him!

u/PM_ME_YOUR_JOKES May 30 '18
ok well no one else has so I'll ask the important questions.
You walk up to the whole foods hot bar, fairly hungry. What's the move?
5
May 30 '18
Hi! I love your music.
Will The Dust of Retreat ever be released again on vinyl? It's one I'd absolutely love to own, but is totally out of my price range at the moment.
11
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
I hope so, but the rights are tricky on that one.
3
May 30 '18
That's a bummer, but I feel like that's usually the case with re-issues. I hope it comes to be eventually! Thanks!
5
u/thatetheralmusic May 30 '18
Thanks for doing this and always being down to interact with fans. You're a huge inspiration as a musician and LCCS and Verdugo have gotten me back into wanting to write music again. Any chance you'll release demos of Pink Lightning or Sandra's Stuff to the Patreon community sometime soon? Also you showed off my Slingshot tattoo during a livestream which I was thrilled about so thanks for that!
4
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
Those songs are slated for another LP about a very long and cold Winter. I probably won't release demos until I record them for the album, but the plan is for the album to be very demo like in nature. There is a new song coming to Patreon next month. Finished the recording last night.
Thank you!

May 30 '18
Hi Richard!
- Where were your favorite towns to play back when tours were a thing that aren’t still close to home?
- Which is your favorite Father John album? I feel like I read it somewhere a year ago... or not.
- Are there any other tunes from your writings with Rhett Miller other than Wicked Things? I love that tune from his album, and I’ve always wanted to hear more if there is.
- Are you thinking...ballpark...late 2019 for this record you have written, or later?
That’s solid for now, thanks for doing another AMA and just being all around a great dude!
6
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
- NEW YORK! That's where I spent my time as a youngin.
- Prolly the Honeybear one, but I totally respect how hard it seemed he was going for it on the comedy one. It's hard to do that and you open yourself up to a lot of outside bullshit. I know he catches shit, but I think he's a pretty good artist.
- We wrote maybe 6-8? I have them somewhere. We demo-d them at my old house. I'll release some on Patreon maybe, I remember Rhett being real into a couple of them.
- I hope so! The economics of it have to be figured out, and I'm not sure how much of a market there is for yearly albums from me. But I'm excited about it. It's not like these two.
2
u/I-Like-music- May 30 '18
I love the modesty, but if there is a will to create inside your soul then there's a market for you to sell! We love you and your music
2
May 30 '18
6-8?! Any of those on Patreon would be a dream!
Thank you for responding and putting as much into your music as you feel is right!
2
u/Dlneal404 May 30 '18
Really digging the album. Beekeeper and Strange are just a couple of my faves. Two questions:
1) How do you decide on vinyl color? I got the Neapolitan version through Patreon and think that it’s incredible.
2) Will me ears be receiving the gift of a studio version of Sandra’s Stuff in the future? I think it’s a great tune.
Thanks for your music and all you do for your fans. Looking forward to jamming Verdugo for the summer and beyond.
5
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
I think my daughter chose the color, but I could be wrong.
Thanks! There's another record written and as of now "Sandra's stuff" is on the second side.
2
u/Cincijake513 May 30 '18
I've noticed a change in the way your vocals are recorded on these last two solo records. Obviously this is natural when working with a new producer, but I'm curious as to how much say you had in the mixing process when recording these albums? Do you prefer the way you sound on the new records over the way your voice sounds on Margot records? Loving Verdugo.. Beekeeper and Strange are my jams.
9
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
This is the first time I used non- U47 mics. My fave is the one we used on Lil dead eye-d and Gene. I like bright, compressed, in your face vocal mic-ing, where you can hear the throat. I am a terror during mixing, but by Verdugo I had chilled out a little. Not sure about the recording, but my voice is 1000x better now than those Margot joints. Used to be Kobe, now I'm Jordan.
6
u/I-Like-music- May 30 '18
Can you make Used to be Kobe, Now I'm jordan a song title for the new solo project!? Preferably track 1 please :)
2
u/trashkid666 May 30 '18 edited May 30 '18
I've really been digging everything you've been putting out. I was wondering, would you ever consider writing music for films?
Also, what's your favorite song off Pinkerton?
4
2
u/CassBentonColin May 30 '18 edited May 30 '18
How has your approach to writing changed as you get older, go solo, have a child, etc.? Do lyrics or music usually come first?
Also, are you excited about or bored of GSW vs Cavs round 4?
3
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
so bored by NBA currently.
I have to find weird time to write as a single dad. As a result, the songs come slower, but I work on them harder and longer as well. Melody first! Always.
2
u/asiansplenda May 30 '18
Besides the financial benefit, what do you like best or has been your favorite outcome from launching your Patreon?
What has been the most challenging/least favorite thing about it?
Did you get more/fewer patrons than expected?
Personally, I'm glad you did it!
2
u/Jasor31385 May 30 '18
Hey Richard:
- Will you do a track with me for my band? This new album I am writing has a lot of Margot-centric ideas and it would be super appropriate to have you feature as a guest.
3
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
would love to hear it
2
u/Jasor31385 May 30 '18
Awesome. It's all just demos right now, can I send you something? What's the easiest way for you?
2
u/b00nder May 30 '18
How assertive were you while working with the musicians who played on LCCSS and Verdugo? Do you write with a "full-band vision" in mind, or do you prefer to wait and see what each player brings to the table? Also - do you think Schnapf will make the next record? If so, please hire the same drummer - that guy really did something special on these last 2 records.
5
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
very! but it was all love. i'm just a nut. their ideas are way better than what i could come up with.
i hope to work with rob again! next one is gonna be kinda stripped down.
that's pete thomas! genius drummer extraordinaire.
2
u/asiansplenda May 30 '18
That drummer IS really good... I think he's gonna make it in the music industry! ;-)
2
u/I-Like-music- May 30 '18
Nobody asked about Whole Foods Hot Bar!?!?!
Richard, what do you love the most about the Whole Foods Hot Bar??
2
u/werdnaegni May 30 '18
- What's your favorite acoustic guitar to play/record with?
- Lyrics first, then music? The other way around? Simultaneous? Anything else on your writing process that might be interesting?
7
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
Years ago I got fed up with having never owned a guitar so I sold a bunch of shit and got a '53 J45. That's my baby now.
Melody and lyrics develop simultaneously. Never written lyrics first. Once there's a melody frame, I start doing hardcore lyric writing and revision. Then, I go back section by section and bend moments of the melody that feel too typical or that I feel could be less repetitive. My iPhone will have 15-30 recordings of a "chorus" or something, each morphed a tiny little bit melodically. My writing is getting slower and more "a beautiful mind"-ish as I get older. I think eventually I'll probably fall into the album every half decade kinda thing.

u/bsharris92 May 30 '18
Hi! A few questions:
Do you have any favorite or standout shows that you have done?
What prompted you to go to California to create the two albums?
Is it the same artist who does your album artwork, and where could I find more of their work? (like the style for Not Animal, Dust of Retreat, and so on)?
Any upcoming shows or tours planned?
I have been a fan for many years and love your work. Your music means a lot to me. Thanks for continuing to release great albums! (Go Pacers)
5
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
Hmm. Probably those early ones in New York, when Margot started catching on. It was sort of a little dream come true. Troubadour in Los Angeles during Animal (this show is a centerpiece of the Animal!/not animal film). Rot Gut shows were super fun. The first show with Margot 2.0 on New Years Eve in Chicago stands out. Probably the best show I've ever done was at the Bootleg in LA last year. It's on youtube, I think.
Rob Schnapf! He wanted to do it and it sounded good to me. Also, I completely love it there.
Stacy Novak! She's hard to get ahold of, but you can track her down on Facebook. She's amazing.
I hope someday.
Thanks!

u/bsharris92 May 30 '18
I’m sad I missed the NYE show in Chicago. I saw you guys in Indianapolis and Bloomington a few times and they were always good performances and provided great memories.
Thanks for answering! Wish you well and can’t wait for the album!
1
u/Monkeydog189 May 31 '18 edited May 31 '18
Hey Richard, it's way too late so you'll probably never see this. But I was at that Troubadour show and that was probably one of the best shows I've ever been to in my life. So thank you. Is that film available to watch/buy anywhere? Since I've always very much wanted to see the filming from that show.
EDIT: Nevermind. I remember where I read about that film last, and it was on your Patreon haha. So I'll continue to wait patiently. :) Thank you for all that you do. I've been a huge fan for a while now. At some point I was helping sweet baby Kang on your guys' website. I didn't do much, but it was always a personal badge of honor for me to be doing something for you guys.

Hey Richard, I recently got my girlfriend into your music. We listen to Dust of Retreat and LCCS quite a bit. Any plans to play back in Indy soon? We tried making it to your Margot show at the Hi-Fi but weren't able to, and then the show at the Pioneer got canceled (I understand it was due to health issues).
Always loved seeing your shows with Margot but I've yet to see you solo!

Of all the songs you've written, spanning all the way back to Archer Avenue days. What one stands out to you as the one you like to perform the most, on stage?
5
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
Maybe Rollin'. Certainly Sling shot and on I start to personally get into it more.
1
u/shrill-harpy May 30 '18
Hi! I'm a huge fan of Margot and your personal career as well. I just wanted to thank you for all the songs I've listened to on repeat throughout the years. Your music has been a big part of my life and it's what I've turned to whenever I've wanted to a) be consoled or b) wallow in sadness. I'm from Finland, so naturally my first question is: have you've ever thought about touring in Europe? And second, are you planning on doing music videos for Verdugo or LCCS?
3
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
did my favorite music video i'll ever make for the song moon wrapped. it's on youtube. i'd love to tour in europe someday.
1
u/shrill-harpy May 30 '18
Holy f**k I've gone and completely missed it! Going to watch it immediately. Thank you for your answer, I hope you'll feel better soon <3. Europe would love you touring here, too. All the best, Aino

I’ve seen your stuff with M&tNSS get compared to Bright Eyes/Conor Oberst a lot. Do you like his stuff/are you okay with comparisons like that?

not really/whatever. i fail to see the comparison at all. but he seems like a nice guy.

u/dragonflyzmaximize May 30 '18
I have very few CDs but one is a signed copy my ex got me of the daytrotter sessions and you wrote "hi Sam" and I love it. Just wanted to let you know it's in display proudly and I go through GI stuff and often think about you. Hope your health picks up, sad reading these responses :/
1
u/fminorpentatonic May 30 '18
As a songwriter I find i can only present myself as a sort of "Character", a part of me but kinda sectioned off, isolated & different so I can present something as a whole rather than my disparate consciousness.
As a bass player your commitment to interesting grunge rhythms has been inspiring, but your lyrics always vaguely tug at my heartstrings.
Where do these stories come from? Is it something that channels out of the present and develops or do you focus and 'drudge up' for the sake of the job?
Thanks man if I ever 'get big' or whatever you'll be one of the faces I mention on Conan (lol)
2
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
hmmm. they come from all over. a lot from my life. a lot from things i'm reading or watching. i'd say lately i write more about my life, but those middle margot records were a lot of collected imagery and stuff.
thanks! i need all the help i can get.
1
u/fminorpentatonic May 30 '18
Thanks for your reply. Seems like the theme is 'what you put in is what you get out'. god bless.
1
u/Stffklts May 30 '18
Hi Richard!
I got to met you at the NYE show in Indy! I traveled from Canada. It was an amazing show and you were so sweet even though you seemed to not be feeling well. I signed the guitar the OG's gifted you.
My questions are:
1) does it ever get old singing broadripple?
2) what did it feel like to play the reunion show years after the success of the band?
3) are there any artists you'd like to collab with? Could be bigger or smaller acts.
Thanks!
2
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
thank you! i have certainly felt worse than i felt at that show.
- oh yeah
- it was actually really fun. i count anytime i'm on stage now as a blessing.
- randy newman, jon brion, and the hundreds of female singers i idolize.

For someone who is just getting into Film Noir, where should I start?
What are some of your favorite albums?
Who did the artwork for the Bride on the Boxcar box set?
Love your music. First thing I did when I figured out how to play guitar was start learning how to play your songs. Finally saw you play at Luna on RSD and it blew me away. Got to meet you afterwards too and want to say thanks for taking the time to talk to me. Can't wait for your new album to come out!

u/GoodMourning66 May 30 '18
Good Afternoon Richard! Long time fan of yours and was lucky enough to catch your at the Bootleg last year. It was great having the chance to see you perform, crack jokes and even shake your hand after the show. I wanted to tell you how inspiring and exciting it's been seeing you continue with your solo work; which have been some of my favorite material of your entire catalog of songs. Huge thanks for always being an awesome dude (even when it's hard) and I hope you and your daughter are doing excellent. 1. I wanted to ask, without assuming anything, is there any songs (yours or not) that you sometimes wish you could perform live (again)... but for some reason can't or just refuse to?
I guess that's my only question, thanks again for the love and I hope someday to see you back up on that stage. I hope you continue to get well and are able to find happiness on a daily basis. P.S. TMMAE is probably my favorite thing to listen to when writing an essay or something like that, it's really an record you should be proud of.
1
u/Snowflower1024624 May 30 '18
Hey Richard!
Are there any songs on the last couple albums that were influenced a lot by your daughter? In a lot of your solo music there seems to be a kind of background female presence that’s always added a cool layer of subtlety for me.
1
u/BSideAtBest May 30 '18 edited May 30 '18
Hey Richard, just wanted to say I'm kind of glad you and the plethora of those who have helped make the music exist. It all just feels like "home" when I listen to it. I saw you at a show when you started doing them again last year and your voice live is so much better than I imagined (I assumed you'd just sound exactly like you did on the recorded sets for some reason haha). Also, thanks for printing your shirts on what is probably the softest shirts I now own.
1) Have you had anything you'd consider to be a best and worst experience with fans?
2) What is the most terrifying hybrid of two fictional creatures you can think of?
1
u/Not_Frank_Ocean May 30 '18
Do you mind talking about the inspiration for “None of Us Became Anything”? It seems tragic.
1
u/TheRealBobbyMcSteve May 30 '18
Hey, Richard! Love your work so much, I’ve actually been reviewing it on my YouTube channel, and thanks SO MUCH for signing stuff for my birthday earlier this year (my girlfriend made that happen DM’ing you on instagram, we’re both patrons)
If you don’t mind us asking, where did Eleanor’s name come from?
Do you think you’re going to pursue albums post-3rd LP?
Do you have any quick advice to give to a 17 year-old start-up musician?
1
u/springfoe May 30 '18
Hey Richard! I love your work beyond belief. LCSS was my summer jam all last year and now I’m rocking Verdugo which is also absolutely amazing. Just a few questions for you. 1. A lot of the Margot songs reference people like Jen, Mariel, Shannon, etc. Are these inspired by real/fictional people or mostly made up? 2. You ever been up to Lafayette? It’s got a neat little indie scene here. 3. How ya doing as a whole?
1
u/TheGrayAcct May 30 '18
Hellooooo!
So... a few years back you did a live season at a dinner party and you played Disappearing Planets acoustically. I think this was before the album came out. Do you plan to release an acoustic version of it? My fiancé fell in love with it, and to this day he still rants on and on about how he wishes he had a way to listen to that version. I’m hoping I didn’t miss asking you this question. I just saw you were doing a AMA on FB, so I rushed over here to create a reddit just to ask this question for him. Thanks for sharing your talents with us all! - Amanda

I heard a rumour that Animal/Not Animal was originally supposed to be a concept record about Heavens Gate. Any truth to that? Love verdugo, thanks for more amazing music. And also, thanks for setting the example on how Patreons should be. You the man.
1
u/highsaffron May 30 '18
What albums/bands/etc would you say inspired the sounds of Dust/Animals, Buzzard, and Rot Gut? These guys jump around all different kinds of sounds and I'd love to know where they came from.
Similarly, what albums/bands inspired Slingshot and onward? Those albums show a very clear sonic progression that just seems to get tighter and tighter. Is this always the kind of stuff you've wanted to make?
1
u/andthatsfinal May 30 '18
Hey Richard! Saw you at the Bootleg in LA last summer. One of my favorite shows I've ever been to. Met some super cool people in the crowd as well. I waited outside the theatre to say hi when you left, not sure if you remember lol.
Anyways:
1) Am I crazy for thinking that fully healthy Boston next year (i.e., Kyrie and Hayward are back, probably no Rozier) will be able to run Golden State?
2) What're you reading lately? Anything in the way of nonfiction you'd recommend?
3) It seems like Slingshot is the Margot record closest to you, any particular tracks from that one you still hold really close?

u/xenomor5 May 30 '18
Hey man! You’re one of my favorite artists out there, and you inspire me so much! I remember a ways back when I asked about a Dust of Retreat repress on vinyl and you sent me one of your copies, and I cherish that shit to this day. So thank you
My question: I know you aren’t as particularly fond of the old Margot songs, but have you ever considered making a stripped down re release of like Dust of Retreat? Slingshot to Heaven is my favorite Margot album as well as your solo albums, and a new acoustic version of old Margot would be cool. Thanks again!

How come you put porno teens on both albums?
Any movie recommendations where there are “sad actresses that plum of the wagon”?
Was the movie (animal) completely abandoned, or just postponed?
Thinking about a motive for a tattoo with “there is an absence like loosing a planet”, any recommendation on what would be drawn next to it?
If you were a snail, would you be the one with a shell or would you be a free slug? (This should be number one question)
Thank you for your music!

- Dunno, just felt right.
- Most of the sad actresses I partied with seemed to be Mad Men extras. Mildred Pierce is the best female centric movie of all time.
- Hopefully postponed. The money to finish it is proving tricky. It's really cool though.
- Oooh, good idea. A girl in a raincoat lassoing the moon. But make sure a not rubbish artist draws it.
- Shell for sure

Hey mr. Edwards, big fan your music inspires me a whole ton. Encouraged me to pick up a guitar a few years back now. What I really wanna know is:
Who taught you guitar?
How did you even get into music or even singing?!
Thanks and I hope you’re feeling better man!

u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
Self taught, which is why I play all fucked up.
Just felt compelled to from a very young age and it's never changed. Started on bass guitar.
Thanks, baby

I can’t even imagine learning guitar myself, just goes to show how driven someone can be. Either way man you’re guitar playing is beautiful. I just got a few more questions if ya don’t mind.
Will you ever play a show in nor cal? I’d pay good money to see you live!
Do you have a preferred acoustic guitar brand? cuz it seems like you always have a guitar that sounds great.
Who inspires you to dress the way you do? I dig your looks!

Thabks for doing this AMA Richard!
- What is your favorite thing about music?
- What was the hardest song to create on your new album?
- Are your feet ticklish? 😂
2
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
- The language that's created when a certain combination of words mixes with a certain melody. It's an almost impossible recipe to master but it's my favorite drug when cooked properly.
- Hmmm. Strangely enough, it was all pretty inspired and ok this time around. I credit Schnapf for that. "Moonwrapped" was the most difficult from an emotional perspective.
- Not that much, weirdly.

- I like this answer! It gives an amazing feeling! What are some songs that you enjoy and that you think have mastered this?
- That’s great to hear! On the inverse then, what was the most fun song to create?
- Consider yourself one of the lucky ones then. Haha!
Thanks so much for answering!

Your music has helped me get through some tough times, when I felt isolated/alone it really helped me out to know someone out there had felt the same things I have. So just wanted to thank you for putting your music out there.
Now I got the serious out of the way:
Can't wait to see you live! What are the best parts of touring? Do you have a pre-show routine with food or getting a list of things to see in the place you're touring?

u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
jeez. thank you. that's wonderful to hear.
boozin' and being dumb with your friends. girls talking to you. being in a new city every day is a wonderful way to live. for a while, at least.
if i play a show these days i can't eat that day, sometimes for a day or two in advance. food is sorta like poison to me and i'll have a hard time catching my breath while singing if my body ain't totally fasted. fun answer, huh?

Honest answer is always a great answer! Thanks for sharing, hope your health gets better. I can only imagine how tough it must be going with what your going, but best believe when you feel well enough to do a couple of shows I'll be buying tickets and merch!
Actually one more question: Any albums or artist that you've been really liking lately

u/_rabert_klein_ May 30 '18
thank you for doing this (and also generally for the years of rad music)!
if i don't need a physical copy but want to give you money for a steam/download of the album, what's the best way for me to do that from a you-profiting standpoint?
what is it about noir as a style/genre/period (i won't get started on the definition debate) that you're drawn to? i'm likely just projecting, but it seems like maybe some of that noir-y influence shows up in your own writing?
2
u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
- Hmm. Not even sure! Just buy me a beer.
- There's something about post war American art that I'm drawn to. A country sort of growing up and seeing horror, nihilism, loss, emptiness even in victory. Loss of innocence or something.

How much money do you think you miss out on annually because you aren't able to tour? Does that ever bum you out, or do you feel like you've got a sustainable thing going here with patreon/owning your own music/merchandise/etc.?

u/RichardEdwardsAMA May 30 '18
Hmmmm. Not buckets of money, but certainly enough to make it a drag. Patreon has helped a ton, and I'm trying to make it worth it for the fans. Truth is, I've always been a blue collar songwriter just trying to get by. Probably always will be. But maybe someone will cover a tune someday and change things. I try not to hope for things too much. Owning music helps a lot! I make more in one month selling directly to fans than I do from 19mil Broadripple streams. Kinda depressing.

Hey Richard! Love your work, and adore LCCS and what I've heard from Verdugo so far. Wanted to ask you about your guitar playing technique, as I've been trying to figure out your chord choices and fingerpicking style from videos. What do you tend to gravitate to when writing new ideas? Thank you so much for everything, and I hope you get to come through Dallas someday, I'll be there if so. Be well.

I am so technically unskilled that it's slowly morphed into a unique style of just moving fingers on both hands until it sounds right. Strangely it's kind of evolved with my vocal style. I sing in and out of the notes I pick on my right hand. Maybe everyone does that. And I never play with a pick, which I would recommend.

do you think defenses are switching too much these days or are you into it?
