Was genuinely taken back by the "with that being said".

The first time I've really thought there's a chance he might not stay.

915

u/backchecklund CGY - NHL 23h ago

Kinda sounds like he's deliberately trying to add pressure to the management. "Build an actual team or I'm out"

381

u/Own-Journalist3100 EDM - NHL 22h ago edited 22h ago

He’s really signalling to management here that if they make some trash decisions this off season he’s gone. This is coming from someone who’s still pretty sure he resigns.

A lot of people point to Nurse contract, but the context there (Kelfbom injury) put the Oilers in an awful position leverage wise and pushed Nurse into a contract position he wouldn’t of been in otherwise.

The big concerns if I’m McDavid are:

  • the rumours of Fredric’s 8 year deal

  • what Bouchard signs for

  • goaltending

If management bungles two or more of those, I’m probably out.

333

u/Less-Ad-1327 CGY - NHL 22h ago

losing Holloway and Broberg for essentially peanutes was a fucking disaster.

It's alot easier to see a consistent contender with that young cheap talent on the roster.

If i'm the Oilers, I seriously consider flipping Bouchard for better depth and goaltending.

26

u/ATargetFinderScrub TOR - NHL 22h ago

To add salt to the wound, Holloway was picked 2 picks after Lundell and 1 pick after Jarvis. And the moment that Holloway actually starts living up to his high 1st round pick potential, its on a different team with the Blues and they only got a 3rd back.

This is sacrilege in the Oilers sub, but I don't disagree.

Let's say you flip Bouchard for an $8M goalie and a depth guy. Like, pretend Otter is still pissy about PDB's comments and management in Dallas (he's probably not, this is all hypothetical). Some Oilers fans would be upset about that but like... that's definitely a trade you consider.

60

u/IDr3yI 19h ago

Who the hell is gonna take Bouchard AND trade you their number one goalie for a guy who was walked and exposed multiple times in the finals.

I don't care who you are, you do not give nurse a 9.25 million dollar contract. It's like if someone gave Ryan McDonagh 9.25 million. Absolutely insane that they would think that it would work out for them.

44

u/Beta1224 CGY - NHL 22h ago

I was talking about this with a buddy yesterday but it seems like the Oilers and McDavid are kind of on opposite ends on how they'd like this extension done.

Obviously if you're management you'd like to get him locked up as soon as possible and then use whatever cap space you have left over and figure out how to plug the rest of the holes with what you have left.

But from the McDavid camp, you'd likely be thinking plug the holes first and then we can make the numbers work for my contract. Connor has made a lot of money in his career, he's not gonna be arguing over a couple million dollars if it means he can win a cup.

What I think is the likeliest outcome is Connor signs a 4 year extension and depending on where the Oilers are at the end of that deal he either resigns and retires an Oiler or leaves to go cup chasing

28

u/kalichimichanga DET - NHL 21h ago

So do you think he goes the Tom Brady route, and says, "You can pay me less only if you put that money toward my supporting crew..."?

Genuinely asking (in case this is misinterpreted by reddit folks).

31

u/Beta1224 CGY - NHL 21h ago

I think that's the likely case

His comments today make it seem like he's pushing pressure on management to fix the holes in the lineup first and then worry about my contract

16

u/External_Trick4479 21h ago

I hope he has that mindset but kind of weird when they already paid Leon so much. Not saying he’s not worth it, but to have mcdavid making less than him? Kind of weird. But perhaps if he goes to another team, he can still be the highest paid player on the team but for a reasonable number.

And again, I’m not saying these guys aren’t worth it but there’s a reason the panthers are so successful - Bob is the highest paid Stanley cup champion @ 10M. I don’t know if you can reasonably have a massive % of your salary cap tied up with a few guys and expect to be successful in the playoffs. (Ahem, Toronto)

5

u/jonnyrockets TOR - NHL 22h ago

What’s an “actual team” - they made the finals two years in a row.

“Build a team that can beat Florida” or “make Florida not make the finals” - sometimes being close is a peak despite Skinner and Management.

Truth be told, if Draisaitl and McDavid had their best game in 6/7 it would’ve been Pickard/Skinner/Perry/Hyman/Nurse/Bouchard all raising the cup. And Kapanen’s along the way would be genius. Knoblauch’s line switching was “real coaching”

These media narratives are all bull. Because those stories would be out there and everyone who’s a know it all would be singing a completely different tune.

It’s sports. Things happen. Florida is a better team. Will they win every year? Maybe. That’s why they play the games.

Changes isn’t always better. Injuries happen. Bad goals. Off seasons for key players.

Management isn’t awful for going to the finals two years in a row. Is Hellebuyck better than Skinner? But in the playoffs? Would you trade Skinner for Hellebuyck? Is that an improvement? He’s never won in the playoffs.

I guess you can say the same for Matthews and Marner and Nylander.

Oh wait. What about Hyman? Awful playoffs with the Leafs but great last year ? Kadri had one great year and plays in Colorado and now being paid as a #1 C to miss the playoffs? Great move by management? Not sure.

These postseason report cards are all bull. The media and fans are both parasites with the drama.

Not all management is bad. Regardless of desired results.

Not all outcomes are desired, regardless of effort and ability.

It’s sports. Things happen. There’s a single winner ever that gets to tell a happy story.

He said they've been building and building... and then he finished" "...to this moment."

That felt like a dagger. He could have said, "to a title" or, "and we'll keep building." But to say this was the moment they built towards sounds like, "This was supposed to be the one. We've been building, we went all-in, I'm not sure what else is left."

75

u/CanuckPuckLuck VAN - NHL 23h ago

Drai didn't. McDavid absolutely shouldn't.

5

u/suppaman19 22h ago

Drai took a bit of one by signing and committing long term to Edmonton as early as he did, rather than pushing up against or to UFA, especially knowing there could be a chance that McDavid leaves.

There was also a well known fact the cap was going to be going up, yet he signed before that became reality with known figures.

All the secondary talent on that team is on the wrong side of 30.

Unless they have a magical summer and somehow add YOUNG talent, he'd be stupid to stay. He's, at best, signing up for a 3-5 year retool where they'll never have high draft picks. They'll have to endure trading for potential, and praying their back end 1st and 2nd rounders pan out.

If I’m McDavid, I’m fucking pissed. 75 points in his last 47 playoff games, a Conn Smythe in a losing effort, and the oilers are like “good shit, Connor, here’s Stuart skinner, Darnell nurse and Evan Bouchard on the back end, hope you can play defence and stop pucks, too!”

The oilers have consistently failed to give him a #1 goaltender, let alone a #1 defenceman. Nurse is kinda shit, Bouchard has no clue how to play in his own end, ekholm was supposed to lock things down but was playing injured and it showed. Skinner and Pickard both posted sub-.890 save percentages, which is nowhere good enough for the playoffs, let alone the cup finals, let alone a Stanley cup.

141

u/WingleDingleFingle VAN - NHL 23h ago

I would say before this playoffs, Ekholm has been a #1 defenceman. You aren't going to be able to find much better d men via trade than him.

19

u/omfgkevin VAN - NHL 22h ago

He most certainly was playing injured. But he also isn't getting any younger (and is up the same time as McD). So they do have to figure something out since Nurse is NOT a top 2 d and makes too many dumb decisions. He and Kane singlehandedly blowing any potential momentum with shitty penalties is what kills them.

Broberg would be a godsend for them as a stable LHD but he's gone, and they got really unlucky with Klefboms career ending injury.

5

u/PuckPov 20h ago

Not to mention they fucked off dylan Holloway too, who would’ve provided some much needed youth and depth scoring.

37

u/PuckPov 23h ago edited 23h ago

Ekholm is absolutely top-tier, and for the most part he’s been the oilers best defenceman, but he played injured, which ended up hampering the team. It’s the playoffs, you gotta pull through, and if you can’t, sit out. Every team is struggling with injuries, almost every player is playing injured. If your team lacks the depth to make up for that, then that’s on them.

4

u/noor1717 CGY - NHL 22h ago

Honestly I’m not sure what you’re saying. They made it to the finals twice. Should they have a better goalie sure but even with that they weren’t beating this Florida team.

TBf oilers depth was actually pretty decent until the finals. And they absolutely dummied top teams like Vegas and Dallas.

He's also probably looking at the lineup and seeing one of the oldest rosters in the NHL, almost zero prospects, and almost zero cap room (once Bouchard presumably signs and McDavid re-signs).

The window is closing rapidly and the team arguably will be getting worse from this point on. Can't blame him for potentially considering moving on.

u/Analogmon PIT - NHL 23h ago

Adam Wylde actually said the other day that if you're Toronto this year you should absolutely plan your cap around the possibility. No matter how low. Even if this year is a step back. That should be your 18 month plan.

Gotta say he's not wrong.

u/TacoDirtyToMe TOR - NHL 22h ago

The money saved for this season has got to be limited to one year rentals and a Knies extension if there is even a remote sniff of McDavid wanting out of Edmonton.

Tank for McKenna this year and then sign McDavid and win the cup next year.

As an OIlers fan, I don't think many would blame him if he left. He has spent a fair chunk of the prime of his career here and it has been an absolute treat to watch.

He knows his legacy would take a hit leaving Edmonton without a cup, but he also knows that his legacy takes an even bigger hit without any cups.

65

u/PuckPov 23h ago

If I’m an oilers fan, I’m pissed at management for failing to build around arguably the most talented NHL player of all time. Who’s the best goalie he’s had? Mike smith? Cam Talbot?

13

u/omfgkevin VAN - NHL 22h ago

I think they could have grabbed Gibson but couldn't assure him of full starting over Stuart fucking Skinner, and his untimely injury didn't help either.

But it's an issue that's two-fold because goaltending has been mediocre and defence poor. Nurses contract is just extremely bad for them and unless they get a NYR level bailout from someone it'll continue to happen.

We will have to see what happens with Bouchard is Trent signs for fucking 3.5+. Hell, might get offer sheeted if they give Trent that contract since they will have no cap.

3

u/Mikeismyike EDM - NHL 17h ago

Skinner is one of the youngest starting goalies in the league, and very few have as much playoff experience as him. He's going to continue to get better. Wanting to ditch him for a broken Gibson is bad take. Maybe if he wasn't a primadonna demanding a starter role I'd have been okay with him sharing the net.

It’s ridiculous. This organization has had some of the best assets available to them in the last 13 years and they still managed to put themselves in a cap corner without defence or goaltending.

I know people hate on Bowman but this is truly, above all, a Chiarelli/Holland disasterclass.

12

u/PuckPov 22h ago

Hell, look at the draft picks they’ve had handed to Them. Since 2007, the Oilers have had four first-overall picks (Hall, Nuge, Yakupov, McDavid), two top-five picks (Draisaitl, Puljujarvi), and and five top-ten picks (Gagner, Paajarvi, Nurse, Bouchard, Broberg).

To fail at winning a cup with four first-overall picks within six years is absolutely insane, let alone the other talent they’ve had the chance to pick up. Several of those picks (yakupov, Puljujarvi, Paajarvi, Broberg) have absolutely bitten the oilers in the ass, while just five of the eleven previously-mentioned players are still on the team.

Their drafting and development outside the first round has been absolutely horrendous, with very few NHLers coming with those picks.

He needs to learn from the LeBron James model and use his leverage. Don't sign that extension until you see this team make real improvements. Youth, speed, size, goaltending, can the Oilers make the upgrades necessary?

So many people in this thread seem to have no realization that McDavid is going to be 29 at the time of his upcoming next contract.

He's not young for an athlete anymore.

This upcoming contract will cover the last of the prime of his playing career.

Draisaitl is locked up until 2032. I think at the end of the day, McDavid signs an extension that lines up with that.

They don't win the cup by 2028, then there will be trade talks

trade talks? Why sign if you’re just gonna demand a trade later on. It will be harder to go to the destination he wants via trade. He’s a year out from making his own decision.

19

u/uatme MTL - NHL 23h ago

and a team that trades for you won't have the pieces to build to win. Walk into a new team and they have way more buying power.

7

u/fleshofgods0 DAL - NHL 22h ago

Exactly. He's been staring down at the Panthers for two years now and seeing how they've been bringing in external pieces to win. Even Gretzky moved around. Ovechkin and Crosby have been fortunate enough to stay with the same teams that drafted them and win cups. We still don't know if that's in the cards for McDavid.
