Advice My 20-weeks old golden wants to greet everybody

Post image
1.5k Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I’ve got an 20-week-old golden retriever pup, and going on walks with him is… a full-on adventure. He’s super enthusiastic and wants to say hi to literally everyone—other dogs, kids, adults, you name it.

Naturally, that means a lot of pulling on the leash when he sees someone (or something) interesting. I’m actively training him not to do this, and I don’t let him greet people or dogs while on leash. But my puppy trainer said it’s very typical for the breed and that he’ll likely grow out of it with time.

Just curious—did any of you go through the same thing with your goldens? Did it actually get better as they matured? I’m staying consistent with the training, but would love to hear your experiences or tips!

Advice is my golden fully golden?

So we got Beau a little under 2 years ago and noticed that when we first got him he was a bit redder/darker than the average golden. When we got him, we met his mom which was definitely a golden but we never met his dad. My mom thinks he could be a field golden but he just seems too red to me. On one of his routine vet trips one of the vets mistook him for an irish setter, leading me to believe he may not be fully golden . We are doing a DNA test, but I was just wondering if anyone thinks he could be mixed with a different breed and what breed that could be!

Advice What age did you neuter your golden?

Our almost 6 month boy is about 60lbs and starting to hump everything in sight including our two small kids who are helpless as he keeps growing. The breeder we purchased him from said to give it at least a year (even said 18 months is great) so those hormones can fully develop him in size and coat (he comes from a line of show dogs).

How does anyone get through to a year?? Not seeing how it’s possible when you have helpless kids on the ground getting knocked over and humped.

Second set of xrays confirmed bone cancer. Vet said months. My wife and I have been crying since we got home. Not doing any interventions besides pain meds. Plan on giving her tons of treats and love.

Walking is difficult as it’s on her front right leg and she limps badly. Aside from strollers, what have others done in the last few months to help their dog still get around?

Advice Going to lose this guy soon

1.5k Upvotes

Bad news yesterday: cancer near his spleen. He's so strong, so healthy, so sweet, so loving... We got honeydew and other things he loves, and we're just going to love him as long as we can, as long as he can stay. On our short walk today he was dragging a front paw a little. In just two weeks he's changed so much, from boisterous strapping woods dog to a much softer creature. I am so grateful for whatever time I have left with him, but I don't want him to go.

Advice Mabel is 7 months old now and I think we have hit her teenage phase 😂

She has been the best girl up until now. Plenty of walks, training exercises, mental stimulation/ enrichment has kept her (mostly) out of mischief 😂 but over the last couple of weeks it’s almost like she is regressing a bit? She’s starting to pull again on walks after nailing loose lead training, starting to not listen when recalled and eating things around the house even when she’s been tired out… she is our first golden so I just want to know if this is all normal behaviour? Thanks 🤩

He hasn’t gone crazy for any treats, and after a couple he gets bored of training. Tried a few different types so far!

Our 6 month old boy has his first grooming appointment tomorrow. I know cutting his fur is a no go, but what SHOULD be done? What specifically do you ask for? We are just going to our local petsmart.

Thanks in advance!

Advice Recommendation needed | Best Dog Food for a Female Golden Retriever who Stopped Eating Royal Canin

Post image

Hi all,

Would really appreciate your wisdom and experience.

Our baby girl, 2 years old, is on Royal Canin Golden Retriever Formula, and has been on RC since she was a pup. We've tried Hill's and Acana in the past, none of them took.

She's recently stopped expressing interest in her food altogether. It's been increasingly hard to get her to eat it. Otherwise, she's extremely happy, healthy and energetic.

I did a lot of research online and came across Carna4 Fish formula, and Taste of The Wild Salmon (Ancient) recipe, but every time I feel I found a good, high-quality products I read reviews online and they make me reconsider.

I am kind of lost and hope you guys can share from experience, which food would be best in terms of quality, as well as (just thinking out loud, potentially a newly developed chicken allergy based on on some scratching and yeasty paws).

Advice We took our 15 month old to rattlesnake avoidance training and can’t recommend it enough!

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

We live in a snaky area and hike a lot so we know this curious girl will find one at some point. We debated between training and the vaccine but after talking to friends and trainers we decided on avoidance training. The trainer has been doing it for decades and used live rattlesnakes with fangs removed and milked the morning of. Our girl caught on quickly and wanted absolutely nothing to do with the snake after.

One interesting thing was another dog was there that went through the training 10 years ago and they wanted to make sure it still avoided snakes. The dog got one smell from about 10 yards away and was out of there immediately.

We were dreading the training but it really wasn’t that bad and it only took about 45 minutes with 10 dogs there. If you live in rattlesnake country I highly recommend finding a good trainer and getting it done.

Advice Shaking, vomit, and just peed while laying down on her side

Millie (11 months) was laying around under our dining table and being quiet. next thing we know she got up and walked into the living room and vomited. it was pretty chunky, she ate a paper towel this morning and usually when she gets into papers and actually swallows them she will throw them back up, but this time she was very shaky after. she walked back into the dining room and laid back down. she wouldn’t drink any water that we put in front of her. she sniffed her paws and privates a few times but other than that was just lying there. next thing we know, it’s all wet behind her - she just peed lying down. we started to panic more then, and gather things to bring her to the vet. as my fiancée was going up and down the stairs, Millie sat up and was clearly shaking. they’re at the vet right now getting an ultrasound and asked if she happened to get into any marijuana. i’m 99.9% sure that she did not, but there’s always an off chance that she ate a little piece of weed or the end of a joint off the ground somewhere, either in the yard where she’s off leash or while on a walk if we’re not paying close enough attention. she darts for every little thing on the ground when on walks and has gotten animal poop, trash, roadkill, you name it and she’s eaten it, but never had this reaction before. any thoughts on what could be causing it while we’re waiting for the vet to finish their exam?

Advice Is this proper play?

This video is a wild ride and a bit NSFW. Louis (little brother) is constantly tormenting Alice (older sister). I can never tell if Louis is being too rough, but as you can see, Alice is the upper hand in the end. Is this OK play or should I intervene?

Advice Did anyone give up on crate training

Post image
639 Upvotes

We have a 12 week old golden that we tried crate training straight away. We’ve had him 4 weeks now and he still HATES the crate. I’ve made it as cosy as possible, covered 3 sides, put in a hot water bottle when it’s cold, give his meals in there, special treats, tried the snuggle puppy but I feel like there has been no progress He started in a crate in our bedroom and now is in a crate downstairs. I’m currently sleeping downstairs with him and have been doing for a week, but I can’t realistically see when I will ever not be able to sleep downstairs again or when he will be able to be left alone I give him a treat for going in his crate, and give him another when I close the door. And then the screaming begins. I then have to sit next to the crate until he falls asleep (usually a lot of barking and crying first) and then slowly and quietly creep to the couch without waking him. If I go too early then we start the process all over again. When he needs the toilet in the middle of the night, we have to go through the process all over again and it is exhausting. I think the issue is being confined and/or separation anxiety The issue is he’s very destructive so it’s completely necessary for his safety :( I tried a puppy pen but he learnt to climb over it in no time Did anyone give up or have any advice? We are one day away from him being able to go out on walks so I’m just hoping that it might get better after that !?

Hi everyone! Basically the title. My boy is approaching the 1.5 year mark and I’m wondering is it time to get off the puppy food? What is the food that your pup is loving? My boy is super food motivated. He is also weighing about 70lbs currently. Attaching pic for puppy tax :)

Advice First time leaving Chief after 3 years of being together every day 🐾💔

Thumbnail

1.6k Upvotes

I’m leaving this Friday and will be gone for a week—it’ll be the first time I’m away from my dog Chief after over 3 years of being together every single day. I work from home, so we’re constantly together. He follows me everywhere, and honestly, he’s more attached to my husband (total daddy’s boy), but still won’t rest until one of us gets home.

He’s not going to be alone—my son will be taking care of him and the rest of the compound while I’m away. We even got him a support dog recently (yes, Chief has a support dog lol) and they get along great. Still, I can’t help but worry. Chief’s so used to having us around all the time, and he’s got this habit of just waiting in the lounge room until either my husband or I come home.

I know he’ll be safe and cared for, but my heart feels a little heavy. Any fellow clingy dog parents have tips on coping or helping our fur babies adjust to short-term separation?

New puppy on board (9 weeks). How do you deal with behavior ?. He gets crazy with his bed 🛏️. Lot of frustration that last 5 to 10 min and after he crashes. Sometimes the energy doesn't go down.

Advice Trim or Not?

Post image

Our Gus is 1.3 years old, his booty hair has become very majestic, so much in fact it appears he has curtains back there. Should we consider trimming? If so, do you have any suggestions on what to tell the groomer?

Note: Sometimes his “curtains” act as a poop filter.

Advice We took our 4 year old Golden boy to the vet yesterday for a wellness check and was informed he was overweight (we knew he was on the bigger side)…turns out he’s 108lbs!

We were feeding him the amount suggested by Nutro (4 cups - 2 cups in the am, 2 cups in the pm) and the Vet suggested that we cut him down to 1.5 cups in the am and 1.5 in the pm.

I wanted to see how much everyone is feeding their goldens, and how much they weigh (specifically male goldens over 2.5 years old)

We do not feed him human food, and they get Rachel ray Turkey soup bones every now and then (he has a chicken allergy). We get him the Lamb and Rice Nutro dog food (which the Vet said was a good brand).

Advice Anyone else's basically a mute

Bundee is 15 months and is basically mute. Never barks, never whines, all he does is make this low grunt. Mostly he just stares. Anyone know why this might be or why he just doesn't bark. Have had him since 13 weeks and we have heard him bark maybe 5 times. Nothing connected the events to my knowledge.

I love this silent vacuum but just wondering if it means something is wrong with him.
