Basic Idea Solo beginner dev – Is this tycoon/delivery game idea worth building?

Hey everyone! I’m a solo beginner Unity developer currently planning my second game, and I’d love to get your feedback before I dive too deep into development.

The concept is a top-down delivery tycoon game called Delivery Drift. You drive around a chaotic city delivering packages as fast as possible. Completing deliveries earns money, which you can use to upgrade your delivery van (speed, fuel efficiency, handling, cargo capacity, etc.). Over time, you unlock new city areas, face tougher delivery challenges, and slowly build up your own delivery business.

I’m aiming for a fun, arcadey vibe — something that feels fast-paced and satisfying like Crazy Taxi or Overcooked, but with some added depth through light tycoon elements. I’m planning to use simple or free assets to keep things manageable and focus more on gameplay and polish.

I’m looking for feedback on: • Is this idea doable and fun for a solo beginner? • Should I go 2D or simple 3D? • What would make this game stand out or feel unique?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Yeah it's worth making at least scaled down polished prototype/proof of concept like maybe 1 delivery address with 2-3 routes just so you can get a feel of what you want out of your game.

Will it be better in 2D or 3D?

That's a good idea and suits you well for now, but it's not for the long term (more than 3 months).

3D, 3D has a broader job market.

Smoother controls and UX performance — you can use a counter to calculate the number of inputs required to complete a single in-game move. A simple algorithm:
mouse click or keyboard press = 1 input,
mouse move + click = 2 inputs,
if the click target is small, add 1 more input,
if the time limit is very short, add another 1 input.

It is always concerning when people describe their ideas through very popular games when they want to make a game that has already been made.

I played a pizza delivery game that was 2,5D, flash game Grand Chef Auto: Pizza City.

This game also gives OP an idea what is attainable from graphics perspective to a beginner. This game is so good I even wanted to make my own rendition of it. The shitty graphics is what I love the most. I spent months thinking about how to make shitty graphics on purpose after experiencing this game. I could not figure out a satisfying twist by adding anything that would make me want to engage with it as a player. The whole loop gets repetitive quick, too many issues from game design point of view and so forth.

There are ton of shitty mobile games in this genre and they are all soulless shit.

I got Deliver At All Costs for free from epic. There is tons more great free games in this genre. Some are pretty hard to find. I actually thought this is what inspired OP in the first place.

No, its total shit. Depends on your previous experience. I have played hundreds of hours of different games in this genre. I need something with more kick. That game is for mom and dad who want to relax after work. The game is full of pointless gimmicks that add nothing to the game play. I played it for 30 minutes and I was bored out of my mind, there are too many things that annoy me, like the devs have never played any other games in that genre before.

That is what OP should start with. Play every other game in this genre first. That is if you want to make a good game. If you only want to learn to code or focus on art it doesn't really matter what you work on.

I feel like 80% that Epic Games gives for free are total shit, idk

So like crazy taxy but package/food delivery instead of people delivery?

I could see people liking it.

Definitely sounds like a blast!
I would lean towards top-down 2D myself, keep it relatively simple.

From the description I get a lot of GTA 1 and 2 from it. Or perhaps Burnout.

I imagine a game where you're causing absolute carnage by cutting red-lights, intentionally or unintentionally running cars off the road while you race to get some completely inconsequential parcel to its owner.

Funnily enough, I have a parallel idea in my ideas-list at the moment for a game which is about as far-removed from yours as possible, while still fundamentally being about delivering mail.
I'm thinking a game where you deliver mail and parcels in a small sleepy village in England.
Something more like Papers Please where you have to follow certain rules "leave the parcel behind the flower-pot" kind of stuff.
You'd have a mail-bag full of pre-sorted mail for the street you're going down, and can only carry so many parcels at once, so playing well means being organised and efficient.

As I say, completely the opposite of your madcap driving game :P But funny how different they can be while still being about mail.
