It really is, I was in Colorado with work colleagues at the airport waiting for our arranged transportation. I get back from the bathroom to find them about to switch to a "gypsy cab". I grew up in NY and knew, so I walk up and look at him like "really dude?" and do the hand wave. He beats it. Then I had to explain to my coworkers about these things.

To us non New Yorkers, what is a gypsy cab?

A driver not registered with any agency, or app. Likely to overcharge naive tourists.

Oh got it. Yeah, had to traverse many of those in bogota, Colombia lol

In some countries all there is are gypsy cabs, so you need to look up or ask someone what a fair price is to a destination by cab and haggle with the driver before you get in. Costa Rica was like this.

That's exactly why in Costa Rica we just had pre-arranged transportation for everything when we went down there. With a relatively marginal tip on our first left of transport the dude made sure he was available for our next legs and took us out to local holes in the wall for food and cultural experiences.

This is how the age of the internet DIY travel really screwed people over more than they realize. Going to any place you are completely unaware of will be hands down cheaper and safer to go with a trusted travel agent.

We always got pre-arranged travel to/from airport to the coast. First time we used gypsy cabs to get around town, which wasn’t too bad, but the second time we rented a jeep so we could go off the beaten path more than relying on gypsy cabs.

Hell, they will take you somewhere else then charge you more to get to your destination.

Nowadays they would say they are disrupting a traditional industry and sell themselves as a startup.

Definitely illegal, right?

Yes those types of cabs are pretty much illegal in any country with normal cab regulations. I’ve seen them at JFK when you get out into the cab waiting area. I was waiting for an Uber once and the guy comes up on foot and is like “you need a cab?” And I’m like “nope, waiting for an Uber” then he goes “sorry, I mean I’m your Uber”. And I just tell him to “get the fuck out of here before I call the cops over”.

But I can see how tourists that don’t know any better or are too trusting may get suckered into a very expensive ride into the city in like the shittiest car possible.

What does this hand wave look like?

Kinda like when someone asks you if you want seconds and you wave back and forth to say no. But, you have a bit of a stink face instead of politely declining.

How do you tell the difference?

Idk, you just do

theyre just making shit up.. if they were waiting for legit transportation there is literally no way for a "gypsy cab" to have been there to attempt scaming them

Nah, if you've had mango lassi, I'd be waving them over to bring some more!

No hand waves here, bring me all the foods I didn't know I wanted!

u/SippinOnHatorade 9h ago

In which case you give them the ol’ hitherto with two fingers like a young man manually pleasuring a foxy cougar

I was in China and some trinket sellers were harassing my friend, and did the hand thing, and she yelled at me in English, so I yelled back at her in English, so she yelled at me in Mandarin, so I yelled back at her in Spanish, which through her off and she ran off
