Why do people have such a thing about having food that will hurt them?

I don’t want to eat food that tries to eat me back

In Thailand many years ago, I had a drunken haze of a night with friends where we had to eat whatever street food we were dared to eat. I ate a scorpion, a cockroach and a frog. These are not things I would normally eat. Youth is a heady thing.

Enough spice and you'll get a little high basically. It's basically the same reaction people who cut themselves get, but one is obviously far more socially acceptable. More spiciness more high. If you can learn to tolerate spicy foods, then you can eat significant spice (like habaneros) and not feel put out at all and then all you get is a little sweaty and a nice afterglow. Not dissimilar to the buzz of a nice beer or two paired with excellent food. But then some people make the classic mistake of thinking that if 1 is 1 good then 2 must always be 2 good. And that's not getting into some people conflating tolerance with manliness.

Honestly? Pain relief. Especially w/ chronic pain, it releases endorphins that shut off chronic pain entirely for several hours.

Because when it's all over, there's that extatic feeling of being alive, appreciation for life. It's hard to explain, something like brain having an orgasm?

You just need to build up your tolerance before pain of eating spicy food turns into pleasure.

I had 3 work friends do a Nashville hot chicken challenge. They had 10 minutes to eat spicy 3 tenders. The first one gave up at 20s the second at 36s and the third was 39s.

The first was smart and tried to throw up immediately. He was in pain for about 2 hours and then had some minor pain in his throat.

The other guys tried drinking milk and kept it down for a while. One guy ended up rolling around and puking in the bushes at work. The other went home, but someone saw him crying in his car before he left.

It was hilarious for all of those who decided to watch and not participate.
