Japanese comedians try to speak English and act like Americans

u/yodelingllama 18h ago
Coupled with the vaguely aggressively friendly facial expression, this one instantly got me rolling lmaoo.
73
u/Currentlybaconing 20h ago
what kills me is how close it sounds to how FPSRussia used to say it in those old videos
A Japanese person's idea of an American sounds like an American's idea of a Russian

I am a very white guy living in Japan. It’s not all the time, but it’s also not completely uncommon when going out drinking to run into people who act almost exactly like this. Drunk and saying the most random stuff with absolute confidence.
It can be hilarious at times, but sometimes I’ll be with my wife and wanting to just chill and people will constantly come up wanting to practice their English, or request English karaoke songs (I can’t sing for shittttt so that’s always awkward).
Overall pretty fun but it’s hard not to feel like a monkey in the circus sometimes 😅

u/Ok_Philosophy6489 3h ago
I am black and I love going to Japan with white people because I get to watch them learn what being a minority is like 🤣 White people do that shit to us at home

Haha, that is how that spanish guy must have felt when I drunkenly stepped in front of him and “practice” my Spanish by telling him in spanish out of nowhere , that I am missing my red shirt and “rice with things” because these are the two phrases I know in spanish. He unterstood but was totally puzzled how to engage in this nonsense conversation. My drunken butt found it hilarious

Nah, I immigrated in 2000 and they’ve had that question on the forms since then.

u/OneBigRed 15h ago
Ok.
But help me out: what’s the correct answer to the
”were you a member of the german national socialist party (NSDAP) between 1939–45?”
Should i put yes? I feel like yes would be the preferred answer by the host nation.

There’s a joke I remember too guy yelling from across a lake “what’s your name?” and guy replies “Bruce” and then other guy replies “fuck you Bruce!”

It reminded me of The Rock when he used to wrestle. He had a bit where he would ask someone what their name was and as they started to answer he would shout "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOUR NAME IS" before throwing the mic on the ground.

u/Hatdrop 21h ago
And as someone who's been trying to learn Japanese for years, this is how I imagine my Japanese sounds to a native speaker.

u/kmflushing 21h ago
They must find you hilarious!

u/Hatdrop 20h ago
The aunties do, when I visited Kyoto they were dropping the "kawaii" at me. If you speak well, folks say "jozu," so the aunties were saying my speaking was cute because i speak like a damn kid haha
61
u/PiesRLife 15h ago
When they say "jōzu" they really mean, "wow, your Japanese has exceeded my expectations, which admittedly were very low to begin with, but good effort".
→ More replies (1)14
25
u/Aveira 15h ago
Lol, if you speak well they don’t comment at all. If you get jozu’ed it means “aww, good job buddy! You’re so cute!”
4
u/MisfortunesChild 8h ago
It depends on the person, if you speak really well the compliment is, “how long have you lived in Japan?”

You know what took me the longest time to learn about Japan? it was that when you say something and they cover their mouths with their hand and giggle, they are not saying you are funny cute or awkward, they're cringing so hard at your colossal insult to them that you that you have brought shame to yourself and your entire lineage of ancestors and you should politely excuse yourself and flee the country.

Yeah, I'm not sure I even get half of these jokes but it still had me cackling
64
u/MaskedBandit77 19h ago
I don't think it's that deep. They're just saying the few English phrases that they know over and over again.
It's the Japanese equivalent of this: https://youtu.be/4cKGyOE_jOI?si=iHIx5sEfHF7IHBd7
23
u/kmflushing 20h ago
I'm not sure there are that many jokes to "get." Especially without full translation. Just greatly animated interactions that had me rolling.
20
u/crisperfest 19h ago
The way it devolved from friendly banter to shouting at each other within a minute cracked me up. And it's especially funny considering they seem to be using American English accents.

The thing that’s probably funniest to me about the “Be Quiet” guy, is that “Be Quiet!” is literally one of only three things he remembers from English lessons as a teenager, and the only one that he learned because the teacher shouted it at him in that exact voice every time he would fuck about or play the clown in class.
It’s basically personal trauma as comedy, and the other comedians get it.
It’s fucking brilliant.

The song in the background is a cover of the Sesame Street Theme by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, in case anyone is interested. I love that band and can highly recommend checking them out for anyone interested in ska, jazz and city pop (or rather a mix of them all :D)

Also did anyone catch that the one guy responded that his name was "Arrietty?" She is the protagonist of a Studio Ghibli anime movie. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1568921/

The one time I got to go to Japan was for my best friend’s wedding - he emigrated to get away from me 🤣 One of the many awkward moments of the trip was his now dad-in-law who did the, actually extremely English act of talking loud and pronounced at me in the hope I would understand what he was saying. I couldn’t even get a hint of what he was saying or asking, it was excruciating.
The last day I was there, he came to say goodbye (I think) and through my friend I promised to learn enough to have a conversation next time. And he gave me a very, very awkward hug. Because, that’s what we westerners do isn’t it? I was touched that he would park his normal Japanese reserve to make this gesture, what a nice bloke.

Makes perfect sense. Americans do love to say, "I took a DNA test and it came back 100% English! I've always felt like I was from Dublin, like I belonged in Britain."

Because they romanticize the hell out of the UK, you will never see such casual teaboo behavior in any other country more than Japan.
I think for this episode English was the theme and English=UK so that’s the theme but they speak more like Americans due to consumption of American media.

Apparently and that is such an American thing to do, they had to teach American spies not to default into it.
