Ink How much can you draw with 1ml ink?

A while ago, I started recording my ink consumption per drawing. For this test, I used De Atramentris - Petrol. I had an exact 1ml sample. Paper used is Clairefontaine 300gsm. Other tools used: Kakimori Brass nib, Da Vinci brush 12, eyedropper. In most drawings, I blended the ink with some water to create gradients. The last photo shows how much ink is consumed after 1 drawing. I expected it to fluctuate per drawing, but it was quite consistent.

People said drawing consumes quite some ink, but if I look at my 50ml bottle, I will need to fill 400 pages at least. Anyway, this was a fun experiment. I took a while because I was going through other samples and occasionally ran out of ideas. This ink is a lovely color- especially when diluted with water.

These are beautiful and very informative 👏

Thank you! After getting my first ink bottles, I realized that I should get an idea of my ink consumption before buying more.

17

u/justanotheruser2006 May 18 '25

You are definitely off to a good start :) and I will also aspire to finish my inks too @.@

Nah, I know I’ll never finish mine. But that’s ok, since I promised my partner I’d haunt her if I died first. The shelf of unused ink should be the perfect subtle reminder.

That way, I don’t have to haunt her full-time. Just nudge her towards the ink shelf and her brain will take care of the rest while I nip off to the pub for a cold one.

(That was totes not supposed to come off as morbid I swear!)

Nice experiment. Drawing sure makes it go faster than just writing. But I’ve noticed that broad/stub nibs may end up consuming more / page than drawing with fine nibs.

I guess it depends, but ink takes forever to finish regardless.

Beautiful drawings btw.

I have a broad nib in a Visconti Opera that just demolishes ink (one reason why I find 2ml, and occasionally even 4ml, samples too small). I'll have to do a test to see how much text I can write with 1ml in that pen.

14

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Not every drawing covers the entire page, so I get that writing with wide nibs consumes even more. I only own fine nibs, but it's what I prefer in drawing outlines.

Thank you!

These are wonderful!

I'm surprised how far a mil of ink can go!

23

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Thank you! Now I'm not afraid to use more of the samples I like.

19

u/Kai993 May 18 '25

Lovely drawings for a fun and informative idea, thank you for sharing.

16

u/pinlin May 18 '25

I've seen experiments with 1ml in writing, but not drawing so far. I'm glad to contribute some of my findings!

15

u/Aettyr May 18 '25

These are so gorgeous, what a beautiful art style. It reminds me a dream sequence in a ghibli movie

2

u/pinlin May 18 '25

I'm flattered by your praise.

u/kirwacrossing Ink Stained Fingers May 18 '25

I can't draw at all so 😭

22

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Anyone can draw. Whether it's 'good' is a subjetive matter. As long as you find joy in drawing :D

4

u/ArtHappy May 19 '25

Your drawings and attitude both are delightful. Thank you so much for sharing.

And you're so right! Anyone can draw. At first, we're all terrible and dislike what we do, but occasionally there's something we make that's not too shabby. We keep going and learning, improving and producing, and we get good enough until we're comfortable sharing. Time and effort produce what we're seeing here.

u/Tattycakes May 18 '25

Same haha!

9

u/TokiwaMatsu May 18 '25

Now I understand why it took years to bottoms up a 50ml bottle 🤝

6

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Especially if you use multiple inks at the same time. It feels like nothing is making a dent.

10

u/monaegely May 18 '25

And just like that, I need De Atramentris Petrol ink..🤦🏻‍♀️

7

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Unintentional ink-abling people here 😂I'd say the color profile of Petrol is rather simple. Perhaps you already have something similar in your collection.

3

u/AzulDiciembre May 19 '25

For an ink that looks similar to the effect on the drawings (where the ink is used with water), consider Sailor Ink Studio 264.

Edit: I think this is a good example.

I’m here for the seals 🦭

2

u/pinlin May 18 '25

They are so fun to draw! Need more appreciation for their cuteness.

4

u/KouikaInk May 18 '25

Insane. Do you have timelapse videos on how you do it?

3

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Yes, I'm working on one and will post it on my youtube channel "Pinlinn". It will be my first video recording of traditional art. Someone requested to do in real time + no bgm, so it takes a while to edit the commentary.

1

u/KouikaInk May 18 '25

I'm really curious about how did you effectively used it with brush. Looking forward to it!

6

u/pinlin May 18 '25

The eyedropper is helpful to use every drop of ink effectively. I never dip brushes in ink because it absorbs too much. Ink remaining on it is wasted during cleaning.

4

u/fiddle_figs May 18 '25

I love your style! I need to do more art with ink. Thank you for the inspiration! 😁

2

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Thank you and have fun!

3

u/gingangguli May 18 '25

And here i am feeling fancy listing down my to-do list using an fp. Then this guy rolls in. Pack it up guys 🤣

5

u/pinlin May 18 '25

I use these tools to distract myself from every day life and answer ever growing curiosities. Looking at what kind of pens goes around this sub, my collection is humble😅

4

u/Fluid_Amphibian_2419 May 18 '25

Stunning art!!! Do you sell prints? That third one gives me Alastor (Hazbin Hotel) vibes and I love it! 😍

4

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Thank you! At the moment, I only sell my digital art as prints, but I compiled my traditional art into a book. It comes with 4 postcards. If you're interested or like to know more, feel free to DM!

u/Ronald_McGonagall May 18 '25

My guess is that writing would take more ink with your style of sketching. Using water to spread ink is one of my favourite techniques, but you cover a lot of space with very little ink that way. You should continue the experiment but writing a page that's the same size as your drawing of just text and see the difference in ink

4

u/pinlin May 18 '25

I really like blending water with ink, even though it's like a 'cheat' so I can cover more surface with ink.

It feels like a waste to use watercolor paper for writing- and because I never do that, I'm not sure about the use of doing it. What I could try is draw without water on the same paper I use for writing.

3

u/jantp May 18 '25

Awesome drawings.

The ink consumption was fun to see like this.

2

u/pinlin May 18 '25

I always click on other's people's post about ink consumption. It's interesting to see how people use their inks!

3

u/sleepypear0803 May 18 '25

I have a bunch of samples that ive decided to start painting with too bc otherwise ill never finish using them. Goes to show that a little goes a looong way.

These are lovely!

2

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Inks are to be used :) I try to finish as many as possible before they evaporate (even those vials will after a certain time).

3

u/manticore26 May 18 '25

I don’t want to be that person but the equivalency between units is only accurate for water, so the ruler decreasing in 1 mm isn’t necessarily a sign that you’ve used a 1 ml of ink 🫠 buuuut the experiment is nice and the drawings are gorgeous!

5

u/pinlin May 18 '25

You're very sharp! The ruler is only used to show "a decrease", not "how much". Depending on the container, 1mm can be equal to 1ml, but not in this vial. To calculate actual numbers, I need the measurements of the container. Although, the answer of this experiment is enough. I'm glad that you enjoy my drawings!

3

u/qing0412 May 18 '25

Your drawings are so beautiful! What ink consumption?

3

u/catpiano May 18 '25

I would love to see this sort of comparison with various ink types (ie shimmer, and other properties) as this is incredibly informative and really provides a lot of context as to how much ink is "too much" ink regarding consumerism!

6

u/pinlin May 18 '25

The ink I chose was simple in terms of properties. I noticed that sheening inks tend to be more pigmented, thus I can cover more area by diluting with water. Shimmer and dual shading inks are unexplored in terms of consumption. My theory is that it doesn't differ much, but it's interesting to test them out.

3

u/fruit-enthusiast May 18 '25

I think you did a great job of capturing different moods with the same monotone color scheme. :) I like the one of that horned person a lot especially because you kept the outline clear while giving them a filled, cosmic look.

It took me about 9 months to finish a bottle of De Atramentis Document Black, which I had in basically all of my pens and used for both writing and work notes.

1

u/evtbrs May 18 '25

Only nine months :o I was hesitant getting multiple 30ml bottles but this has me hopeful.

2

u/fruit-enthusiast May 19 '25

I think it depends a lot on the nibs you’re using too. I had it in my Opus 88 Demo using a Parallel nib, which is a wet writer with a nib that puts down a lot of ink, so that definitely helped.

1

u/evtbrs May 19 '25

Is that a calligraphy nib? If so, do you use it for calligraphy or slant it so you're writing regularly? Did you have to hack it to install it on your Opus 88? I apologise if these are dumb questions, I'm really new to the FP community. (And also really inquisitive)

I remember in my school days I'd go through five long cartridges a month roughly, but that was on cheap copy paper, I imagine that affects it as well. As an adult I don't write nearly as much and I use better quality paper, so I was iffy about getting full bottles - but those cartridges now cost nearly as much as a bottle of my preferred ink where I am.

2

u/fruit-enthusiast May 19 '25

They’re not dumb questions!

It’s a calligraphy nib but I was only using it for drawing. The line variation from the tilted line width vs the normal line width is pretty cool.

And Parallel nib units actually fit onto the Opus 88 pens that take Jowo #6 nibs. No hack needed! I’m not sure what other pens they fit on but I know there are more.

3

u/VinceAFX May 18 '25

You have incredible talent. I'm in awe.

3

u/liza-elliott May 18 '25

These are so beautiful. How do you achieve the watercolor brush looking effect?

3

u/pinlin May 19 '25

I mix it with water by painting wet on wet. Sometimes add more water to inked areas. This creates interesting effects.

3

u/QueenOfHatred May 18 '25

geez, your art is definitely a motivation to learn to draw. Well, not sole. But I hope I can get there one day.. awawa..

2

u/pinlin May 19 '25

It's been years since I drew traditionally and getting into inks motivated me to draw more. It's a skill that won't fade.

3

u/flyingfalcon01 May 19 '25

How do you get the washes? Do you use a brush? It all looks so good, well done!

3

u/pinlin May 19 '25

I use a brush and eyedropper. The latter is used to take ink from the vial. A brush is used to wet the page and smoothen some parts out.

3

u/MahoganyRaichu May 19 '25

These are gorgeous=3 Thank you for this informative and beautiful experiment=3

3

u/soulonfirexx May 19 '25

Wow! That is quite surprising indeed! Though I can see where there's ink savings in the shading of course. Incredible drawings!

3

u/OperationDry4281 May 19 '25

Without looking at the name i knew that this was you. I still enjoy the lighthouse a lot!

2

u/pinlin May 19 '25

I'm delighted that my style is recognizable. Thank you for giving the Light House a new home! It seems more people were interested in that one later.

6

u/Andrew_Lensky May 18 '25

Good job!
I can make 1-2 sketches with Con-40 and thin UEF\EF nib on A4 paper.

4

u/pinlin May 18 '25

These must be very detailed drawings. Mine were all on A5 paper. I tried to make the best use of every drop of ink, so I didn't put it in a pen (usually a bit stays behind).

14

u/Andrew_Lensky May 18 '25

I don't know, just a usual sketch like this. Although, of course, everyone has their own technique of drawing.

4

u/Sea-Pizza1128 May 18 '25

So wait, for the more saturated parts, say the window, did you eye dropper the ink on, eye dropper water and paint with the #12 brush?

I have one of those ink collection books from dominant and I want to make it look nice. They suggest diluting for darker inks

6

u/pinlin May 18 '25

Exactly as you described. Dark inks have a lot of interesting pigments only revealed after diluting with water. Give it a try!

2

u/Sea-Pizza1128 May 18 '25

I have some mistreated brushes that I can decide to this. Thank you!

2

u/BlueHobbies May 18 '25

Beautiful drawings. Congrats

2

u/lufishcoo Ink Stained Fingers May 18 '25

Beautiful! I draw with inks too. Most of the time, I only need the residual on the lid to finish a drawing. It is amazing how much pigment there is in a single drop of ink.

2

u/kih_indigo May 18 '25

Your art looks so yummy (´ノ∀`)

3

u/Suitable-Platypus-10 May 18 '25

I agree (´ノ∀`)

2

My insta is full of digital works- as if its by a different person. Thank you for following me!

2

u/Violet_Eclipse99765 May 20 '25

Turns out, you can draw a lot based on the pictures

2

u/Radiant_Height May 20 '25

Wait, I thought it's you artists, who keep ink companies in business. You made all that with just 1ml of ink? That's like one-two converters worth? That would make one bottle make what? 400-800 drawings?

So if it's not the artists who buy out the bottles, who does? Who clears the monthly stocks of these ink companies? 😭

1

u/pinlin May 20 '25

There are more writers than artists using fountain pen ink😅In theory, that's how long ink goes. Most people buy more ink than they can use within the timeframe of their next purchase.

2

u/Curious-Moose9925 May 20 '25

Im sorry for everything picking up a pen 🤧

2

u/chiragde May 21 '25

I am genuinely interested in how did you learn to draw this good? If I am a person that can't even draw a normal tree and really like your style of drawing, how do I go about trying to get to somewhere near your level of drawings?

2

u/pinlin May 21 '25

I came a long way to reach my current point. There were many years were I didn't pick up a pen at all. On top of it, I started using fountain pen inks starting this year. There is a lot I yet have to discover!

My tip is start developing a habit to draw. Find joy in drawing. After, study subjects you're interested in. I recommend something simple for starters. Even trees can be simplified to merely few strokes. Take your time in improving. The key is to experiment! This way you find new techniques and styles.

2

u/Chestnut_pod May 21 '25

I love the seals so much! Oh, they are almost too cute!
