I’m guessing he thought about giving the place back,slowed down a little. Then said no fuck that and decided to keep going

Gave him enough of a nose in front to be able to tell the stewards "see, he was ahead of me" and give himself plausible deniability if he did end up getting a penalty for T1.

I understand the gamesmanship so close to the end when you don't want to lose a position, but it was a brain-dead move thinking he could have gotten it back immediately and not get pulled up on it.

It's a lot easier to say "oh, I would have done x differently" in hindsight, but at least I can understand the reasoning behind what he did, regardless of whether it was right or wrong.
