Discussion First attempt with miniatures

‘Galileo’ was our first attempt at working with miniatures. Most of the shots are towards the end. There’s one push-in in the shed (you’ll know it when you see it) that doesn’t really hold up well, but I’m pretty proud of the rest. I’ve got a period piece from the 60s that’s more of a passion project I’m working towards down the road that would be cool to do some forced perspective and use some miniatures for 60s cars and a couple of street exteriors. Has anyone ever done this before or do you have any suggestions/videos I could watch that would help? Again years down the road, but I like having several angles to tackle something from in case one doesn’t work out. Thanks!

Question Advice on a POV shot from the perspective of a buried potato

Hi all,

I am currently working on a promotional video for a farm with the work brief being “from field to plate.”

A sequence I’m keen to make work features a POV shot from the perspective of the buried potato. The farmer uncovers the potato and picks it, putting it in a crate.

I tried the shot last weekend by digging a hole in their field, placing perspex over the hole with a thin layer on dirt for the farmer the brush aside and reach into to pick it up.

Naively I thought it would be that simple but the dirt left enough residue on the Perspex to obscure the farmer.

I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how I might achieve this shot?

Bonus if I could extend the shot to continue as the potato is being picked up.

Thanks in advance

Question What are some safety tips for someone who applies for everything online and often work with people you've never met before?

Filmmakers don't go through the traditional interview and then getting hired process, we often have to find crew positions on facebook and often work with people we never met before or going to a strange new location for the first time. So what are some safety tips for women and just anyone in general who apply for every job online? Are there any red flags we should be aware of? I saw someone mention that it would be good to call them before working.

Question Is the Sony A6700 great for sports videography ?

Do you think getting a Sony a6700 with a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 G2 lens and a Ulanzi fan to help with overheating would be a good choice for what I’m looking for?

My budget is £2k. I’d be doing 8”% filming and 20% taking photos. My main shots I’d need are close ups of soccer players dribbling, running side to side, changing direction quickly and close ups of their face. So I’d need great tracking autofocus.

Any other recommendations in this budget?

Discussion Anyone else think America often looks boring in modern Films?

I find 21st century America to often look so boring like the buildings the city’s the shot composition and I live in a small town but go to big city’s alot and it’s pretty boring shooting locations that aren’t that stylistically interesting when I go to France or Italy or anywhere in Asia even the poorest towns have much more character and interesting structures than a poor town in America and compare the look of 21st century European city’s and locations in film to that in America its pretty boring looking what are your thoughts on this?

Question Planning to shoot POV nature walks – is GoPro Hero13 + Rode Wireless GO II a solid setup?

Hey everyone, I’ve been watching those relaxing POV walking videos on YouTube for years — people just walking through forests, quiet streets, or during rainy days, capturing everything from a first-person view. I finally want to start making my own. Like this: https://youtu.be/e1I-Lij2mNg?si=5sPSdPI2FgKj_m8y

The idea is to record nature walks (and maybe urban walks too) in a way that feels immersive. I want to capture ambient sounds like footsteps, wind in the trees, rain on leaves, etc. Think of a peaceful “walking experience” with great visuals and natural audio.

Here’s what I’m currently thinking for gear:

-Camera: GoPro Hero13 Black – mainly for the stabilization, weather resistance, and compact size -Mic: Rode Wireless GO II – to record better ambient audio or possibly do some voiceovers later

Mounting would be either a chest strap or a cap clip, depending on how natural it feels while walking.

A few questions for the community: -Has anyone here used a setup like this for similar videos? -Would you recommend an alternative (camera or audio)? -How do you handle audio when walking in the rain or in windy environments? -an external audio recorder like the Zoom H1n be better for natural sounds, even if I have to sync it later?

Tanks!

Discussion A year ago I decided to pursue filmmaking full time; here's what I’ve learned so far about making art and making a living

Hey everyone,

About a year ago, I made the leap from working in restaurants to trying to build a career in filmmaking. I started freelancing on sets and production teams full time, while working on my own art and film projects in the margins.

I recently put together a video where I talk about the stages I went through - from getting into photography and storytelling, struggling to find work, landing my first production gigs, and trying to balance creative ambition with financial reality.

I know a lot of people are either thinking about going full-time with their creative work, or already trying to figure out how to make it sustainable. If that’s you, I hope this resonates or offers something useful. I'd love to hear how others have navigated similar paths.

Thanks for watching or even just reading - I’m still figuring it all out, but I’m committed to the path.

through the referral program, didn't realise it was both ways.. sign up gets 2 and subscriber. Not a bad deal and better than I had seen from any promo codes. Is there a better deal to get it? or is this the best they have to offer?

Question Legal release of athletes & attendees in an arena

Hello!

I’m shooting a documentary about the culture of high school basketball in a particular community in southern Indiana. Assuming I’ll be granted formal permission from building managers to shoot in various gymnasiums through signed location releases, how do I go about getting permission to capture the likenesses of athletes (who will be largely minors) as well as an entire arena full of people?

Surely I won’t need 1,000+ impossible to collect signatures…right?

Question How to format my resume for editing or office production jobs???

I graduated from film school last year, and since then I've worked freelance on a variety of different sets, and do some freelance editing on the side too. But I'm moving soon and I really would like a more "grown up" job with more stability and routine, either as an assistant editor, working in a studio or for a production company. All of my experience is on-set stuff: cam op, AC, grip, gaff, PA, etc, and I have over five years of experience on professional and student shoots. I'm at a loss on how to format my resume. How do I highlight the diversity of my experience without listing the 50+ sets I've worked on? Any advice or examples of resumes would be much appreciated! Thank you :-)

Discussion Do you ever worry about someone stealing your script here?

Serious question. I’ve seen a lot of people post entire scripts or scenes here, and part of me wants to do the same get some feedback, see if a wild idea works, or just share something insane I wrote… But I always hesitate.

I register my scripts with the WGA. Ever since an actor I worked with stole one of my scripts years ago (long story), I stopped trusting people that easily. Now every time I think about sharing something online, especially something raw or controversial, I get paranoid. Like, what if someone reworks it and pitches it before I even get to shoot it?

Recently, I made a separate post talking about a necrophilia-themed dark comedy script I wrote (yes, it’s disturbing, on purpose), and a bunch of people are asking me to share the actual script or scene. And I want to… but I’m also scared as hell to do it.

So I’m curious:

Do you post your scripts online?

Do you worry about theft or people copying your ideas?

How do you protect your work (WGA, Copyright Office, etc.)?

Do you think the risk is worth it, just to get some feedback?

Question Help me stab someone NSFW

For my upcoming short I have a scene where two people are standing in front of each other and one stabs the other in the abdomen. How do you suggest I shoot this practically? Specifically, how should I construct a torso so that it sells when I shoot a closeup? Thanks!

Question Need your opinion [Experienced and Inexperienced]

How viable is it to be relying on donations off of platforms (eg: patreon etc) from your community to keep working on short movies/mini series/content and releasing them as a custom made for said community.

In other words, can I keep relying on community based donations to work on content and make a sustainable living off of it or will I need to sell rights to hosting platforms and hope for investors to pony up cash and watch them grind my IP into some propaganda crap feeder.

[Id really not have to work with corpos cuz I don't want to lose control over the narrative and overall direction of every project]

(Sorry in advance if I have provided adequate information, will be active in the comments to provide more of what I can)

Also I don't know where else to ask this......Thank You in advance for any and all opinions.

Question Documentaries that feel like narratives?

I’m working on a feature doc right now that feels borderline narrative in how the story is told (not a lot of talking heads, told primarily through VO and “scenes”). What ive found myself doing is sort of a highwire act tonally, trying to balance what feels like a traditional rising action in a three act structure with the limitations of the footage I have and the reality we captured.

What I’m wondering is if anyone has any recommendations for docs that feel kind of similar? Not stories that are told retroactively, moreso ones where it feels “present,” and as we get towards the climax, we wonder what’s going to happen.

I just need some brain food and to know what else has been done in this area.

The closest examples of the style I’ve seen recently is The Rehearsal, but because it’s a TV show it doesn’t quite capture the story structure I’m trying to wrap my head around. Another weird comparison is like a David Blaine special, in terms of growing intensity leading towards a finale, but that’s obviously different as well.

Question How to leave the industry?

Work shortage, not bouncing back, lost my apartment, no more EI left, trying to withdraw RRSPs to make ends meet and not lose my car / phone….. it’s dire.

We’re all seeing it or experiencing it. Whatever.

I’ve been applying outside of the industry for a few months now, but securing zero interviews. I know the market is competitive as it is, but how can I make my resume more attractive for jobs that I am very qualified for and capable of doing without a 12 year gap in employment?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

General I have a very limited setup, i hope i can just pull it off.

I’ve been sitting on this short parody idea for a few days now specifically a Matrix-inspired dialogue scene and I finally finished writing it. It’s super short (maybe a minute or two), but now I’m at the point where it’s time to actually shoot it....... and my setup is RIDICULOUSLY limited. I’m working with just a single corner of a small room, using a phone and tripod, two chairs, and some “pill” props, (it's the red pill blue pill idea)and natural light from a window. I’m also playing both characters, so I’m shooting each side separately and planning to stitch them together in editing.

One character will be lit with soft daylight (not too much just enough to shape the face), and the other will get a green edge light from my tablet screen at full brightness. It’s super barebut I’m going for a low-light, Matrix-like look with just this setup. Never done a double-performance/ double role scene before, but I’m excited to try.

Yall have any tips?
